Work Text:

Ever since Harry Potter had been twenty-eight years old, he was able to see two reflections in the mirror often when he looked in one, despite living alone. The reflections would be his own and that of another man.

This other man’s reflection was quite handsome. The man appeared to be close to the same age as Harry was, he looked to be just a bit taller than Harry was, had a fit body, short black hair and brown eyes.

The reflection’s state of dress wasn’t always the same either, sometimes the other reflection would be nude, sometimes in nothing but a towel, other times in a suit, and sometimes he would be wearing jeans and a t shirt.

Sometimes the other reflection would interact with him…Harry had lost count of the amount of times now when the other reflection would be walking and suddenly it would notice him , it would stare directly at him , a flirtatious smile appearing on his face. Sometimes the reflection would wink at him, blow him kisses…before going back to using the mirror as he had previously.

Harry found himself quickly becoming attracted to this other reflection, he couldn’t help it…this other man was quite good looking afterall. However, this attraction he felt for this other man wasn’t just sexual…despite never meeting this other man he felt a yearning for him. He yearned for this man to be real, in the same room as he, he yearned for the other’s touch, to hear his voice and of course to meet him. He couldn't explain it but there was something very special about this other reflection.

Harry wondered if this man existed outside of the mirror and what his name would be, he wanted to know everything about him, and he wanted to know exactly why he was seeing another man’s reflection alongside his own quite often when he looked in a mirror.

Two months passed by of Harry seeing this reflection in every mirror he owned, of keeping this odd development to himself and of continuing to develop feelings for a man who may or may not even exist outside of a mirror.

One day he asked one of his best friends, a woman by the name of Hermione Granger, about it when they met up for coffee.

“It’s the reflection of your soulmate” she said with a smile.

Harry stared at his friend in shock, “What?...My soulmate?”

Hermione nodded, “Yes, everyone has one Harry. You start seeing them at any age after both of you turn eighteen years old. I’ve got some books if you want to read about them but basically, they’re the person you’re fated to one day meet and spend the rest of your life with. They’re supposed to be your ideal romantic partner, you don’t stop seeing the reflection until you’ve both met in person”

“Wow…um…yeah, the books would be great” Harry said.

“Great! I’ll send them to you when I get home. So…what do they look like?”

“He’s attractive. He’s a man who looks like he’s in his late twenties, he has short black hair, brown eyes, looks taller than me and looks fit”

“How wonderful….he sounds really handsome Harry. I’m happy for you,” said Hermione. “Have you tried to ask him out yet?”

Harry stared at Hermione, shaking his head after a moment, “Um…no…I just found out he’s not just a reflection but a real person so of course I haven’t asked him out yet”

“Try talking to him….ask him out Harry. I’m going to go now and look for those books and send them to you”

“Yeah, okay” said Harry before Hermione gave him a hug and shortly after left the coffee shop.

Shortly after Harry left for home himself.

The next day Harry received the books Hermione had mentioned to him and read them eagerly, wanting to know everything he could about soulmates.

Apparently, witches and wizards didn’t just receive soulmates but muggles as well and people having soulmates was a well-known occurrence. Once again Harry felt disappointed and frustrated at being ignorant of something, this was a well-known thing and he was only just learning about it.

Harry gave a sigh.

He decided to try to talk to his soulmate tomorrow and hoped that his soulmate would like him.

The following morning, without the use of a mirror, got ready to face his soulmate’s reflection…covering the mirrors in the bathroom and to be safe in the rest of his London apartment. Just for now…while he got ready , he had a shower , brushed his teeth , brushed his hair and dressed in clothing that he would usually wear for a date before uncovering all of the mirrors in his home.

Harry then went to the mirror in his bedroom taking with him a pen and a notebook, feeling nervous.

Harry looked to the mirror and saw with some surprise that the reflection of his soulmate was holding a pen and notebook as well and was hurriedly writing in it before showing it to Harry.

‘Hello, we’re soulmates…I’m certain of it. I hope you don’t mind me saying so but you look good today. Why didn’t I see you get ready in any of your mirrors?'

Harry was staring at the mirror wide eyed before smiling.

Harry wrote something in his own notebook, showing it to his soulmate his message read:

‘Sorry, I found out we might be soulmates…so I wanted a bit of privacy before I try to talk to you.’

Harry’s soulmate smiled, and wrote something new, showing it to Harry.

‘Understandable. My name is Schmidt, what is yours my beautiful soulmate?’

Harry blushed at the compliment, he wrote another message, and showed it to Schmidt.

‘My name is Harry Potter.’

Schmidt wrote something now, showed it to Harry and to Harry’s surprise it was a phone number followed with his next message.

‘Let’s talk over the phone, I’d love to hear your voice’

Harry grinned, nodding, he went and grabbed his phone and put in Schmidt’s number before pressing the call button.

He returned to Schmidt who had got out his phone as well, a happy smile on his face.

“Hello, Schmidt” said Harry, staring at his soulmate.

“Why hello Harry” said Schmidt, beaming at Harry. “It’s so wonderful to finally hear your voice, is that a British accent I hear?”

“It is…I live in London.”

“I live in Los Angeles” said Schmidt staring at Harry. Schmidt reached out fingers to touch at Harry’s reflection, “You’re quite beautiful Harry, I wish I could reach through the mirror and touch you.”

Harry found himself blushing again, he reached out his own fingers to touch at Schmidt’s reflection “I…I…think you’re quite attractive as well and I wish that too. So many times, when I’ve seen you I’ve wished you and I could touch.”

“I could get a plane ticket and go to you. I’ll touch you, I’ll touch everywhere you want. Your beautiful face, your gorgeous hair, your chest, your legs, your bottom, your…”

“Better stop there for now!” Harry interrupted, his face brightly blushing. “But yes, I would like that. And…and I’d love to kiss you and more than that as well…”

Harry couldn’t help but stare almost longingly as Schmidt touched his reflection where one of Harry’s cheeks was, the other man admiring Harry’s reddened cheeks.

“It’s a date then!” said Schmidt, a bright smile on his face.

“Yes…definitely” Harry said.

Schmidt and Harry continued to talk, staring at each other the entire time. They eventually ended the call but didn’t stop staring at each other.

A few weeks after Schmidt had first communicated with his soulmate he was packing a suitcase, he was getting ready to go on a trip to England.

He had packed everything he would need on a trip to go see his soulmate, he was excited and had been looking forward to this trip the moment he had first suggested it to Harry. He and Harry were both excited to see each other in person, to have the chance to touch each other…to kiss each other and if things went well enough maybe have sex.

Schmidt was more than satisfied with the person who he had received as a soulmate and he found Harry to be quite the beautiful man.

Harry was a man in his late twenties, only a couple of years younger than Schmidt was, he was just a bit shorter than Schmidt was and had a fit body. He wore black glasses, had gorgeous black, short messy hair, had the most beautiful and vivid emerald-coloured eyes and had scars. Harry’s scars were quite unique, there was one in the shape of a lightning bolt on his forehead and some on Harry’s right hand that were in the form of the words ‘I Must Not Tell Lies’ etched repeatedly upon the skin. Schmidt worried about the scars on Harry’s hand, it looked like it might have hurt…like they were carved into his hand…was it self inflicted or some kind of punishment? Regardless, these scars didn’t take away from Harry’s beauty…in his eyes Harry was perfect.

Once he was ready he went to the airport and took an airplane to go meet his soulmate.

It was dark when the plane arrived in London, he was experiencing just a bit of jetlag, felt a bit tired and was hungry, but more than that he felt a mixture of nervousness and excitement.

A broad smile appeared on his face when he saw Harry waiting for him, Harry rushed towards him and pulled him into their first kiss.

Schmidt brought his hands to cup Harry’s face as his soulmate kissed him, the kiss chaste and slow and tender at first before quickly turning quite passionate. Only moments afterwards, Schmidt deepened the kiss, eagerly kissing Harry back. The kiss felt right and it felt absolutely perfect. As they kissed Schmidt felt a sort of want and need for Harry that he had never felt for anyone else before.

The kiss soon ended, the two men separating from each other…happy smiles on both of their faces as they now stared into each other’s eyes.

Schmidt’s hands left Harry’s face, one hand to grab at his suitcase and the other grabbing one of Harry’s hands.

Not long after they left the airport and Harry drove them both to his home, an apartment. The apartment had one bedroom, was quite spacious and was quite nice with a good-sized kitchen. A TV was in the loungeroom nearby a bookcase full of books and DVDs.

Schmidt’s luggage was placed down in the loungeroom.

“How are you after the trip here? Hungry? Tired?” Harry asked, staring at him with a smile.

“Both actually…”

“I’ll fix you something then…and then I’ll prepare the couch…unless…you want to share my bed tonight?”

Schmidt smiled, “Thank you, and as for sleeping arrangements, the bed sounds perfect…don’t worry, I’ll keep my hands to myself…”

Harry smiled, he pressed a kiss to Schmidt’s lips, “Great! Well…for now why don’t you rest on the couch and watch some TV while I make you something. What would you like?”

“I’m fine with just a sandwich…” said Schmidt.

Harry nodded, “One sandwich coming up then”

Schmidt sat on the couch, put on the TV and watched it while Harry made him something to eat. Despite putting the TV on Schmidt didn’t really watch it, he glanced at it occasionally channel surfing idly but he mostly just was content in watching Harry.

After eating they both went to the bedroom, they brushed their teeth and changed into their nightclothes before slipping into bed.

As promised Schmidt kept his hands to himself, he fell asleep staring at Harry’s face, looking forward to their first date the next day.

The following morning Harry made them pancakes for breakfast and afterwards they got ready to go out for their date. Both of them had separate showers, brushed their teeth, brushed their hair, and dressed in clothes appropriate for a first date with their soulmate.

They went to a restaurant.

After being seated at a table for two and ordering their meals, they stared at each other in silence for a few moments before Harry spoke.

“So, uh…tell me about yourself” Harry said with a smile.

Schmidt gave a nod, “Of course! I..am a Sagittarius, I am Jewish, I am head of marketing at a company called Associated Strategies and I live with three roommates. I like to cook, watch TV and movies, I have three half siblings and a father who left my family when I was eight.” A bottle of wine was placed down on the table, Schmidt poured it into both of their glasses. “Your turn” he said with a smile.

“Okay, well I am a Leo, I don’t really have a religion, I work at a local restaurant as a waiter and I live alone. I also like to cook, watch TV and movies and read.” Harry now paused to take a large sip of his wine before continuing, “As for family…I don’t really have any family as my parents are dead, and my only living relatives were abusive but I do have a couple of best friends who have been like family to me.”

Harry now drank more of his wine.

Schmidt stared at Harry, concern, shock and anger filled him, “Your family hurt you?” he said quietly.

“Yeah, they did but it’s fine. I’m fine. One of my best friend’s family has always been really nice to me so I’m fine” said Harry, a slight smile on his face.

“Well…that’s good then,” said Schmidt.

Harry seemed a bit down now, he gave a sigh, “I…I…haven’t ruined this, have I?”

Schmidt reached across the table and grabbed Harry’s hands in his before pressing a kiss upon them both, “No, of course not.” Then in an attempt to prove this to Harry he leant across the table and kissed him.

Harry returned the kiss, deepening it and smiling into the kiss. Schmidt kissed Harry passionately, soon licking Harry’s bottom lip and when Harry parted his lips, he inserted a tongue. Schmidt explored Harry’s mouth, tasting the wine and Harry both as he kissed him. They kissed for a while, their tongues moving against each other, Schmidt causing his soulmate to make muffled noises of enjoyment into Schmidt’s mouth.

They soon separated, staring at each other, their faces flushed.

“See…Harry, nothing’s ruined” Schmidt said, smirking as he now brought one of his hands to caress one of Harry’s flushed cheeks.

Harry smiled.

They then started to talk about movies and TV shows, talking of trivial topics now before talking of their friends.

Schmidt was just telling Harry about his roommate Nick Miller when the food was served to the table.

Schmidt had a chicken Caesar salad while Harry had roast lamb and vegetables , they both refilled their glasses of wine. For now at least…their hands left each other as they then proceeded to eat and drink.

As they ate there was a comfortable silence, after a while Harry started to talk again.

“So…uh…in the mirror reflections of me did you…er…like what you saw?” Harry asked, his face was blushing.

Schmidt nodded. He always loved to just watch Harry, he found Harry gorgeous…he forgot the amount times he wished he could be with Harry on his soulmate’s side of the mirror. He had wanted to touch his soulmate so badly, wanted to kiss him…wanted to make love to him. Though it hadn’t taken long for his feelings of attraction to also develop into genuine romantic feelings. It had taken him ages to gather up the courage to attempt to communicate with Harry.

“Yes…I find you quite attractive. Your hair is messy but gorgeous, I love your eyes, your glasses suit you, your scars look unique and you have a beautiful body. Do you work out? You always look so good”

“Thanks, and yeah…I do actually, three days a week.”

“Do…Do you like how I look?” asked Schmidt.

“Y..Yes…I…I think you’re really sexy Schmidt.” Harry said with a nod.

Schmidt grinned, relief washing through him. He had worked so hard to get his body the way it was today…so he really had wanted his soulmate to like it.

“I work out almost every day,” said Schmidt.

“It shows…” grinned Harry.

There was another round of silence between them as they continued to eat and drink the wine.

When they were finished their meals Harry paid for them both and drove them back to his place.

After going inside, they made out on Harry’s bed for a while before eventually having sex.

When they finished, they lay beside each other, spent and panting, smiles on their faces and their faces still very flushed.

“That…was…amazing…” panted Harry.

“Yeah…it….was…” panted Schmidt.

Schmidt pressed a soft kiss to the side of Harry’s lips before grabbing onto one of Harry’s hands and intertwining their fingers together.

“So…Harry…my beautiful and sexy soulmate, would you like us to continue this relationship?” asked Schmidt.

Harry glanced at Schmidt and smiled, he nodded, “Yes…do you?”

Schmidt gave a nod of his own, “Yes, more than anything” he said.

“Good” said Harry.

They lay on the bed for a bit longer just enjoying each other’s presence, enjoying the feeling of their hands intertwined together, both feeling content.

Schmidt stayed in Harry’s home for a week more, their time together spent having sex, watching TV, talking, drinking and cooking for each other. They were both disappointed when Schmidt had to return to Los Angeles, but promised to keep in contact and visit each other often.

A couple of months later Harry moved to America to live together with Schmidt, both of them very much in love and quite looking forward to the future that they would share together.
