Latin; a dead language with no practical applications except perhaps the deciphering of old texts and as a particularly quaint party trick.
Thankfully, as Harry finds out, Latin is not as dead as he was first taught when he decided to learn the language. It wouldn't have mattered anyway, of course; he loved Latin, and would have been proud to know it even had it been as useless as it was pretty. But in the world of Wizards, the world of Magic, Harry realizes his rare talent with words is particularly valuable, and allows him to use magic that no one's ever heard of, that no one's ever seen. But as time goes on, and he becomes more and more entangled in the webs spun by those around him, he starts to realize just how deep the magical rabbit hole goes and how dangerous power like his can be.
All Harry had ever wanted was for the world to make sense.

Sirius was the first to the Potter's house after their deaths, but rather than irresponsibly leaving baby Harry in Hagrid's care, he took him with on his revenge spree. Unfortunately, when the Aurors found him disoriented and laughing hysterically in the wake of the rat's destruction, Sirius was too out of it to make sure Harry got somewhere safe as they dragged him off. Dumbledore should have come to get him, but he never did. Sirius and the other inmates raised the child, and fourteen years later Sirius and Harry busted out, freeing all the others in the process, and they caught the eye of the powerful recently resurrected Dark Lord in the process.

VERY good premise. Author is skilled and so eloquently conveys the grim, gloomy beauty of Azkaban and its inhabitants.
Definitely worth re-reading. Wish more had been written.

For the second time that day Hermione J Granger stared at the corpse of her best friend and could feel her heart be ripped, unceremoniously out. Leaving only a gaping cavern inside her. Her limbs went lax and she could feel everything, herself, the world.
Collapsing.
What if the golden trio lost and the light fell. What if Hermione Granger was the only one left in a world where Voldemort won. And what if Hermione went all the way back, before Riddle even stepped foot on Hogwarts grounds. Be warned that this will be a dark Hermione with no happy story or moral choices.
(Trigger warnings in this are serious and if you have any trauma or can be hurt by any subject please take this warning seriously and most if not all subjects should not be taken seriously as I am no expert and this is meant to be pretty depraved in many ways. I apologize before hand if I offend or mishandle anything. Thank you to any who read as I know this isn't a very popular theme and will not appeal to a large audience.)

Read up to Ch. 7.
My god, what a read. There are such strong roots and so much potential in these 30,000 words - I've read this three times already and still want to read it again.
Author is very, very clever. Every aspect of this fic is portrayed just right, fuck. I so adore the author's writing style - it's like her brain works faster than her fingers can type, and it just works.
Despite its abandoned status I still encourage all who come across it to read this roughly-cut gem and appreciate the drab, tragic quality I so fondly see in it.
My heartfelt props go out to this author, and if ever a continuation is uploaded I will be one of its very first readers.

Albus Dumbledore watched two visionaries start as driven, powerful, brilliant young men, and become monsters. He has no heir, no protege of equal power to step in should another one rise, and he is old. So when he hears of a Chosen One with power the Dark Lord knows not, he thinks maybe he doesn't want this boy prophesied to defeat Lord Voldemort to grow up in the Wizarding world. He thinks of the bonds of family, and the opportunity he has to shape his world's politics, and of a corrupt magical elite who've signed on with two Dark Lords over hatred of Muggles. He thinks Harry Potter should grow up loved by his family, and Voldemort be destroyed so there is no need for Harry to ever realize his power, and he acts to make both of those things happen. Because he's Dumbledore and what he wants, he gets.
