Lyss went to her room and fell asleep pretty much immediately after her and Desmond got home.
Desmond honestly couldn't blame her. It had been an exhausting couple of days. Plus, she was always very quick to drift off anyways. He waited until he was 100% sure that she was resting and then snuck out the apartment door to go find Rex. Normally he wouldn't care enough to check (Rex always found his way back to them), but he had noticed Rex's heavier than normal breathing and awkward posture. Even if it was just an indication that Rex was exhausted, he needed to be sure.
He retraced the steps he and Lyss had taken from when Rex left them and was surprised to see him sat against the wall not to far from that spot. He seemed exhausted, pained, and distressed. His mask was off (much to Desmond's growing concern) and his hands were clamped over his ears. He rocked back and forth and ran his fingers through his hair.
Based on the fact that Rex was not actually hyperventilating, Desmond was able to rule out this being a panic attack. He fortunately did not have to deal with them himself but he'd witnessed enough of Lyss' to recognize them. He also was able to determine that this was an emotional thing based off of Rex's facial expression and overall demeanor, though he was still sure that Rex was harmed physically in some way.
Perhaps it's an anxiety attack Desmond thought to himself, seeing how shaky both Rex's breathing and body was. The veteran had dealt with a few of those himself- Pretty much every developed Blank does at one point or another- So he had hope that he would be able to help the northerner calm down.
"Rex" he said gently, sitting next to the stressed half blank but not making any physical contact. He would not initiate that unless given permission. Rex shot him a tearful look that caught him off guard a bit. Desmond had seen Rex a bit sad before, sure. But he had never seen Rex with actual tears in his eyes.
That's how he knew it was serious.
"Hey" he said calmly as Rex leaned up against him. He carefully wrapped his arm around the shaking half blank. "You're gonna be okay" he said quietly as to not overwhelm the man laying against him. He took a deep breath to try and guide Rex back to a state of calm and continued this until the shaking had subsided.
"What brought this on?" Desmond asked quietly as Rex finally calmed down. Rex took a deep breath, realizing that it was now pointless hiding his injury. Besides, Desmond was smarter than that anyways. "Oi, you know how I didn't go through with the ambush?" he asked. Desmond gave an annoyed look but nodded.
"Oi..." Rex inhaled as the memory overtook him. "I didn't just skip out on doing it" he explained. Desmond raised his eyebrows. "I got chased down. Oi... Ended up getting in a fight with Charlie" Desmond exhaled in surprise. "He... He impaled me, Desmond" He looked around to make sure no one was watching and then lifted his shirt to reveal the partially healed would. Desmond let out a shaky breath as he saw it. "Oh..."
"Yeah..." Rex replied, putting his mask back on to avoid showing any emotion with what came next, and also letting his shirt drop back down to cover the slash. "I uh..." He swallowed. Desmond took his hand in his own, which helped to ease Rex's nerves. "I blacked out and I thought I was dead but then I... I..."
"Take your time" Desmond said gently, to which Rex nodded and took a deep breath. "Oi... I blacked back in and..." Another breath. "Charlie was a bloody mess on the ground"
"Ah..." Desmond breathed out as he processed the information. He knew Charlie wasn't dead because he was recovering in the hospital, but it was still really concerning to think that Rex had somehow unknowingly caused the injuries. Though he supposed it was only fair considering that Charlie had fucking impaled the poor man.
"It's really worrying to me... I don't know what happened" Rex breathed out, trying to reduce the shaking in his hands. Desmond had never seen him so shook before. "I should be dead, but I'm not... And now a man is in the hospital"
"Hey..." Desmond soothed. "Whatever happened, you're here and you didn't kill anyone. That's all that matters. And I'll make sure nothing happens to you, okay?"
"Okay... Thanks, Desmond..."
"No problem"
