    the grammar thing wasn't a bigly thing, it's just that i tend to notice dialogue grammar more often lmao; this post is pretty good at explaining it if you wanted to look at it in more detail!

    if there is a speaking type of word after a line of dialogue ('he said' 'she whispered' 'he asked' 'she murmured' --these are called dialogue tags) then that is considered as part of the same sentence and would always be lowercased, with either a comma or question mark or exclamation point in front of it.
    (ie "I don't know what happened," he said.)

    if the person is doing an action after dialogue (like smiling, or moving, or touching something), then it's considered it's own separate sentence after speaking, so the dialogue can end with a period.
    ("I don't know what happened." He stretched his arms.)

    sometimes you can have both speaking and an action in a sentence, but then it would usually end with a comma because the dialogue tag is closer to the speaking words
    ("I don't know what happened," he said, while stretching his arms.).

    The only words I tend to get confused about for these rules would be words like 'he laughed' or 'he chuckled' but those are usually up to the writer to decide ahahha.
