    Spoilers perhaps, I still haven't read the last few chapters of this story yet, so I don't know how things actually end, but am making my way through the majority of the story for the 3rd or 4th time now.

    I think what happened with the box/shredder is that the Ellimist intervened, and changed things so that the Chee would be willing to give them back. Immediately after this, Crayak responds proportionately, by getting Tobias to ask to take David with them as well, when otherwise they might have left him in the hands of the Chee.

    I could be wrong on this, but on this 3rd or 4th unfinished reread it was the first thing that came to my mind and seems to fit perfectly.
