He’s been waiting his entire life for something. 

From the first moment he could clearly remember, Till had always been restless.

At four, when he was napping with the other children, there was a stark lack of eyes on him. At eight, when he was doodling in the margins of his workbook, a weight was missing from his shoulder. At fourteen, whenever he lost a pencil, there was something— someone— who was supposed to return it to him. 

Whenever he turns the corner, he expects to see fluttering pink hair in front of him. Whenever he turns around, he expects to see black in his peripheral. But neither is there.

At fifteen, he meets Mizi, and something finally slots into place. He didn’t know how much he missed her until he met her— and that’s fucking weird. That's not how meeting people he doesn't know is supposed to work. 

Three years later, he meets Sua from Mizi and the pieces of his hollow life slowly fill with color, puzzle pieces he didn't know he was lacking finally coming together.

He googles this 'Ivan' guy on a whim and nearly drops his phone in shock. 

It's an exact match to the boy he saw in his dreams, except he's real. He's real and he's flashing finger hearts at the audience. He's real and he's lifting up his shirt sensually during a dance break to show off his abs. He's real and he's a motherfucking pop idol, fanservice and all. 

The week after he discovers ALNST, a recently debuted boy group under Anakt Garden, was like falling through the nine circles of hell. A lucid dream. The beginning of the end.

Half of it was from his belated sexuality crisis, but half of it was from something else. There is something in Ivan that holds the truth to the emptiness Till has felt his entire life. Something about Ivan will finally cure the constant mental fatigue that's pervaded his entire life. The one that Mizi and Sua helped alleviate, but could never properly fill. That maybe, just maybe, if Till learned more about Ivan— if he looked at him— everything would be alright again.

Till pulls the black surgical mask over his face, readjusting the cap over his hair. The security guard scans the barcode of his ticket and waves him inside once the scanner lights green. Till nods at them in acknowledgment as he passes. Around him, fans giggle to each other, taking photos in the lobby or around the poster of ALNST.

It's a shame that the fan sign event doesn't allow professional cameras. Till would have liked to hone his professional photography skills more, but unfortunately, he'll have to make due with his Android's subpar camera quality. 

His phone vibrates with notifications from his latest post on the Cure account. Honestly, he never expected that account to take off so fast, but having Ivan comment on your first post will do that to you. Hopefully, he'll be able to continue to do Ivan justice today.

It takes an hour for reality to sink in. When it does, he bolts out of bed in panic. Oh, shit, he's going to a family party. Him??!??!!? Really!?

He looks like an emaciated mess on a good day. How in the world is he supposed to clean up his act when he hasn't gone out in days? He's never met any of Sua's relatives before, but he knows the family is big and they all have some kind of goddess gene injected into them because, according to Mizi, they're drop-dead gorgeous.

He shows up to the expensive-looking house with expensive-looking furniture in a cheap button-down shirt and sweatpants that sort of look professional if you turn your head sideways and squint. The shirt had wrinkles when he took it off the shelf of the thrift store, but he managed to get them out with the steam of a shower. Thank you, Internet.

The lady who opens the door is in casual clothing, which immediately makes him feel overdressed, that looks extremely high in quality, which immediately makes him feel underdressed. It's a weird war of emotions. He doesn't like it.

She looks at him in confusion, her eyes practically screaming 'Who is this slob standing at my high-end house?' but too polite to voice it. "Hello dear..."

"Uhm," Till begins. Strong start, you idiot. "Hello, ma'am. I was invited by Sua?" 

"Sua?" The lady looks surprised, which hurts. 

"Did somebody say my name?" Sua peeks out from a door down the hallway. "Oh! Till! I'm so happy you could make it. Auntie, this is my friend, Till. He's the talented artist friend I told you about."

The aunt looks back at Till with new eyes. "Really? You're that Till? My, what a surprise!" 

'That' Till? Sua, what the hell are you telling people about him?

He's ushered in by eager arms pushing on his back and quickly introduced to the other people who arrived early to the party. Mizi waves at him from where she's sitting on the couch with Sua's father. He waves back, trailing over to where his friend sits. Sua tells him to have fun and heads back into the kitchen. 

"You finally came, Till!" Mizi latches onto him the moment he sits down. "Listen to this, Sua's abandoned me! She says I should just sit here and look pretty while she works. I'm self-sufficient too, aren't I? I can help, and yet... and yet, she banishes me. I can't believe it. Only a year and we're already separated..." 

Nerves make Mizi a thousand times more animated and dramatic. He's glad that part of her hasn't changed since the last time he saw her. "Are you sure it's not because you're banned from all kitchens?" 

"Et tu, Brutus?" Mizi rears back. "Why I oughta-"

"Ivan!" Sua's aunt's voice gasps from the entrance to the living room. "You made it!"

Both Till and Mizi's head whip to the source of the noise. 

Till hadn't wanted to get his hopes up, because what are the fucking chances? but apparently, the fucking chances are his bitch because standing underneath the doorway in the flesh is his idol, Ivan. 

Holy shit.

Ivan finishes exchanging greetings with Sua's aunt (his aunt?? Holy shit, Sua, and Ivan are related?) and turns to face the rest of the room.

Their eyes meet.

"Hi," Ivan greets, smiling the devilish grin that's plastered all over Till's phone. His snaggletooth is even cuter up close. "You're a new face. Are you enjoying the gathering so far?"

"..." Till tries to get a word out, but his brain is short-circuiting. Play it cool, play it fucking cool. "The gathering's not even started yet. What's there to enjoy?"

NOT THAT COOL. Now he sounds uninterested and rude! 

"Oh," Ivan laughs. Oh fuck, he must think he's annoying. That's his staged laughter. "I guess it hasn't. What brings you to the gathering today, then? You're not related to me. At least, I hope not."

Till inhales the crisp spring air, feeling flushed from the celebratory atmosphere. He's glad that he hasn't done anything too bad yet (besides making a fool of himself in front of his bias), but he's not an extrovert. He can already feel his social battery crashing and burning.

"Oh!"

Till freezes.

"Did you come out here to get some fresh air too?" 

Reluctantly, Till turns around and comes face to face with Ivan. Ugh, he's still so handsome even after two hours of having his hair tousled by his older relatives. Must be the same DNA Sua shares to look effortlessly flawless. 

He eyes the exit, but the only way out is the glass door Ivan's blocking. He's on the second floor so maybe jumping off won't be a bad idea, but he'd rather not risk it. 

"Yeah," he replies, slowly. If he's careful, he won't put his foot in his mouth again. "It's fun, but... yeah."

"I understand," Ivan nods, a soft smile on his face. He leans against the balcony railing next to him. "I love them all, but they can be overwhelming after a while. It's been a long time since I got to see the entire family together so I've lost my immunity, haha!"

Till nods. 

"Well, I've been meaning to ask throughout the party but... what's your name? I already got introduced to Mizi-nim." 

"Oh, uh," Till hopes he didn't accidentally call Ivan by his name at any point. It'd be weird if he knew Ivan's name when Ivan didn't know his, right? Would Ivan think he's a stalker? Wait, no, Ivan's a world-reknown idol. Everyone knows his name. 

Okay, Till, you got this. Just... don't act like a superfan. 

"I'm Till, Mizi and Sua's friend. I got invited by them." 

Good start. Keep it up.

"I see," Ivan smiles wider. Till squints, blinded by the radiance. "I'm glad you decided to come along with them, Till-nim. It's very nice to meet you."

"L-Likewise. You seem cool, yeah." 

"You think so? That makes me happy." Ivan takes a step closer. Oh god. "Anyway, since we're both out here, let's get to know each other more. Are you often at events like these, Till-nim?"

Ivan's doe eyes are boring into his soul, wide and curious. 

Till swallows. Cool, cool, play it cool. "No. I'm usually at home working. Don't have the time or the energy."

"Working? What kind of work?"

"Nothing amazing. I'm just an artist." 

"An artist!" Ivan clasps his hands together. "That sounds like a great job. I think creativity is extremely important, so I admire artists a great deal. You must be amazing to be able to work from home." 

He blushes, scratching his neck. "I'm nothing special, really. Sua did all the work with getting me clients." 

"Oh, that can't be true." Ivan leans closer. Till doesn't dare breathe. "I'm not sure if you know this, but I'm also... somewhat of an artist myself, I suppose. So as someone who's working in a similar profession, I know that it takes really talent and skill to get and keep clients. You do great work, I'm sure." 

Boy does Till know about Ivan's life as an artist. If anything, he probably knows the most about Ivan's artistry. 

"I- I guess," Till ends up saying, unable to come up with a response since Ivan's cologne is now diffusing into his personal space and it's making him a little weak in the knees. God, he's so pathetic. Sua was right.

"Any other hobbies, Till-nim?" 

"Wha?"

"Besides art, is there anything else you do? I want to know more about you." 

"Well... I also like..." Taking pictures of you and posting them online. Till's mouth clicks shut. 

"You also like...?" Ivan leans impossibly closer. 

"Uh-" He coughs. "Nothing."

Ivan leans back, his lips pursed. Till feels bad for disappointing him but Ivan couldn't torture the fansite information out of him. Ain't no way he's revealing that to the very person he's posting about.

"Well- I-" Till grits out. Ivan perks up, leaning forward again. Oh dear lord. "I like... like... going to the bathroom! Gotta go, bye." 

"Wait, Till-nim!"

Nope nope nope, he's too gay for this.

Ivan must have made it his personal mission to kill Till today. That must be why Till spots Ivan in the corner of his eye no matter where he goes (except the bathroom). Till's trying to melt into the floor so he can not be perceived, but the one person he desperately does not want to be perceived by keeps perceiving him.

"Mizi-nim, Till-nim!" Ivan gives both of them a little wave (cute, fuck). He sits down next to Till. Sua, who was with him, bends down to whisper something in Mizi's ear. The two girls giggle and simultaneously turn to look at him before Mizi gets up and leaves with a short goodbye.

Till watches in despair as his only hope to get out of the interaction with Ivan disappears. 

"Oh, I guess they had something they had to do," Ivan's voice sounds from directly next to him. Till jumps slightly. Jesus Christ, when did he get so close?!

Ivan's innocent eyes blink back at him. His tooth pokes out of his quirked lips. He tilts his head at him. Oh god, Till is going to die but he's going to die a happy man. What is all this aegyo fanservice? He doesn't even fucking like aegyo, but Ivan pulls it off so effortlessly.

"I-Ivan," Till stutters. "You're uh, you're close."

"Oh, sorry. Do you mind it?" 

The problem is the fact that he doesn't mind it! He doesn't mind it so much that he kind of wants to press his face into Ivan's and rub the cuteness aggression out. (Ivan's skin must be so smooth from all those skin care products...)

"No, it's fine..." Till gives in to the doe eyes. They'd almost be puppy eyes if Till didn't know better. Ivan would never make that face at him. They're strangers after all, even if Till's been dreaming of him since Ivan debuted.

"That's good. How's your stomach, Till-nim?"

"My... what?"

"Your stomach. Mizi-nim told me about your irritable bowel syndrome. That's why you had to go to the bathroom so many times, right? It must be annoying to deal with." 

HIS WHAT!? 

Forget all the other shit he did, this is by far the worst thing he could be viewed as in Ivan's eyes. It's over, he needs to pack his bags and move to Australia. 

"HahHAHAhha... Yeah, my irritable bowel... syndrome...! Haha, I think Mizi was exaggerating though! I- I just have stomach issues this week... because of... food poisoning! Yeah, food poisoning. Bad chicken, you know? It'll pass! No IBS here, no sirrr...!" 

It's the way that Ivan's staring at him, eyes lacking any source of judgment, that makes Till want to sink into the couch in relief and embarrassment. Mizi is going to be BLOCKED after this. 

"I'm glad, then," Ivan grins toothily. "I suppose Mizi-nim was just worried about you and blew it out of proportion."

"Yes! Yes, yes, Mizi does that. Just silly Mizi things." 

"Are you close with Mizi-nim? You two seem like good friends."

"I mean, I guess? We're childhood friends, of course, we'd be close. I think Mizi's closer to Sua though," Till sighs, rubbing the back of his neck. "I still love her either way."

Ivan blinks. "Uhm... She's dating Sua, isn't she?" 

Till smiles wryly. Ugh, just the reminder of their relationship makes him feel cripplingly single. They're made for each other though. He's glad they got together. "Yeah, they are." 

At that, Ivan's lips thinned. He looks at where Sua and Mizi disappeared to before glancing back at Till. "... I understand." 

Till blinks, a little confused. Understand what?

He's immediately distracted by the way Ivan's tongue darts out to wet his own lips. Oh wow, those are some kissable lip— NO. Platonic thoughts, Till. You have no chance.

"Well, Till..." Ivan rests his chin on Till's shoulder. "If you don't need to run to the bathroom anytime soon like the last few times, do you want to exchange numbers?"

Till inhales. Oh my god? 

Ivan (his bias!). Shoulder. Warm? Ivan. Smells nice? Ivan (the boy of his dreams!). Number. Number?

"Numbers?"

"Yeah. I'd like to keep in touch after this. My job has me flying all over the place so I can't make it to gatherings like these often. We wouldn't see each other if we didn't exchange our contacts."

"You want us to keep in contact?"

"Yeah. Is that weird?"

Till shakes his head vehemently. "No! No, it's not. I'd love to." As if to demonstrate, he pulls out his phone and shoves it at Ivan. "Put your contact in and I'll text you."

"Wonderful!" Ivan's hand snatched his phone at record speed.

Like meeting Mizi for the first time, Ivan fits into Till's life seamlessly like he belonged there from the start.

Every time his phone chimed, he scrambled to check if it was a text from Ivan like some kind of lovesick teenage boy. He thought he got past his embarrassing crush-phase tendencies with Mizi in middle school, but nope. At least he can play it cool over text much better than in person.

Whenever Ivan compliments him or unsubtly flirts, Till is always so caught off guard. He's probably going to get an actual heart attack someday if he continues talking to Ivan, but he can't bring himself to stop. The anxiety of trying to impress him is nothing in the face of the sheer excitement that Till gets from the smallest things Ivan does, especially the affection. God, the affection. 

Till only remembers bits and pieces from his dreams, but he remembers enough to know that Ivan never acted this affectionate to him. Sure, he was clingy and latched onto Till like an asshole koala imprinting on the first human he sees, but he was always quiet. Always in the periphery, watching with his bottomless eyes. Tolerable until he suddenly does a 180 and starts insulting Till for no reason. He wasn't even sure if they were friends. 

This Ivan, though, offers his compliments and trust to Till like it's nothing. The difference between the Ivan of his dreams and the Ivan in real life should be disconcerting, but it isn't. Till likes this Ivan, but if he were being completely honest with himself... 

Well, 

In his dreams, Till had lived longer without Ivan than with him, but he haunted him until his last breath.

He'd take any Ivan than no Ivan at all. That asshole maniac included.

Till squints at the screen, chewing on a piece of fried chicken. Are those anemone flowers? Red anemone flowers?

The breed is different from the ones in his dreams - after all, how could Earth flowers grow on planets far, far away from it? - but the structure and colors are the same. The only thing it's missing is the bulbous center that's more akin to an insect's eye than a pistil. 

It's... probably just a coincidence. After all, he's the only one who remembers. Mizi and Sua never indicated knowledge of a prior life, though both of them have acknowledged that they felt an immediate connection with him that they never did with other people. Ivan's most likely the same as the girls, only getting vague impressions and feelings rather than actual dreams. 

That's good. Till wouldn't want him to be burdened with the memories of their past life. It's an incredibly lonely experience. 

(He can't stand the sound of rain anymore.)

"Eh?" The Ivan on stream says, showing his flower crown to the camera. It's falling apart. Till's actually impressed at how bad it is. "That's weird... Did I twist them wrong? Let me try again." 

Till watches in increasing amusement as Ivan continues to fail repeatedly at making a single crown. With each subsequent attempt and bewildered expression, Till found himself smiling wider and wider. Ivan's clearly playing up the confusion for the audience, but it's pretty fucking endearing. God, what a goofball.

"I really don't understand what I'm doing wrong," Ivan whines, dejectedly putting the third attempt in the petal-y pile of shame. "They're so ugly..." He points at each of the flowers one by one. "This one's Luka-hyung, this one's Tiya-hyung, and this one's Dotori." 

He chokes through a sip of his drink.

Ivan battles with Luka in the chat for a solid minute before he perks up. "Oh! Hold on, Kosmos! I have a great idea, let me phone a friend..." 

A minute later, Till's phone rings. His neck cracks from the speed at which he snaps his head to look at the damn thing buzzing on his nightstand. 

"I don't know if he's good at making crowns but he's a very talented artist so I'm sure he'll be able to help somehow," Ivan exposits, putting the phone on speaker mode. The dial tone resounds through the live stream, right in pattern with Till's ringtone. 

Oh fuck. Oh shit??

Till spams the lower volume button on his keyboard and jumps to snatch his phone. He inhales, in and out, in and out, and accepts the call. "... Hey."

Ivan on the live stream visibly perks up. "T- Friend-nim!" 

"'Friend-nim'?" Till raises an eyebrow even though Ivan can't see it. He can hear his own voice through the live. Hopefully his phone can't pick that up. Play it cool, Till. Pretend you weren't just watching his stream like a desperate superfan. "What's this about?" 

"What, do you not like the nickname?" Ivan huffs. "How would you like to be called instead? Artist-nim? Sleep deprived-nim? Irritab-"

"Friend-nim is fine!" Till shouts hurriedly, his face aflame. "Don't you fucking dare say that to your thousands of viewers, you asshole!" 

Ivan laughs, slapping the table. "Aww, you should have let me! It would have been really funny, Friend-nim."

"I'd rather not be known by- by that in the public eye, no thank you! I don't even have it!"

A few more chuckles escape Ivan. "So you're watching my live stream then, Friend-nim? How are you liking it so far?" 

Shit, caught red-handed. "Yeah, I figured I might as well since I had free time. It's going horrible though. How have you failed three times already? Those poor flowers."

Ivan on screen puffs out his cheeks, tilting his head and making puppy eyes at the camera. The bastard, he knows Till can see this and he's taking full advantage of it. "But Friend-nim, I really tried my best..."

At some point, Ivan had tried to tape and super-glue the flower stems together but that obviously didn't hold up. He quickly sweeps the garbage into a trash bin. "Haha, I promise I'm not usually this messy, Friend-nim! It's just, flowers are a lot more brittle than I thought they were."

Ivan picks up a stray petal and shows it to the camera. Then he pops it into his mouth.

"What the hell. Oi, get that out of your mouth, idiot! You don't know where that's been!"

Ivan chews faster.

"Ivan, you fu-" Crap, can he curse on stream? "- fudger, what if that one had glue on it?"

He swallows before smiling like a cat. "Were you worried about me, Friend-nim? How sweet, but not to worry. My immune system is strong."

"That's not the issue..." he sighs, exasperated. "Didn't you buy those flowers to make a crown out of them? Why are they your lunch now?" 

"I knew your reaction was going to be fun so I couldn't help myself," Ivan laughs. 

Does this asshole derive pleasure from yanking on Till's metaphorical pigtails? Ugh, why does he like him again?

"But flowers aren't very tasty, huh," Ivan runs his tongue over his lips. The chat erupts, but Ivan is too busy pushing another bundle of flowers onto the desk. "Friend-nim, can you help me with this?"

"I should reject your call for help after that shi- stunt you pulled, but you're lucky I'm a good friend." And that he's fond of Ivan, but he's not fucking saying that out loud. Ivan claps gleefully at the response. "Alright, listen up because I'm only saying it once..."

"But!" Till scrambles to rectify. "I don't mind calling with you. I had a lot of fun today on call so..."

"Oh!" Ivan's voice pitches back up. "I really enjoyed calling with you too, Till-nim."

"Hm?"

"You can just call me Till, dude. You don't have to be so formal with me. We're friends, aren't we?"

"Oh. Till, then," Ivan's voice is warm. "Till. Till!" 

"Yeah? Ivan."

"Haha, nothing. You have a nice name, Till. That's all."

Till flops into bed and tries to keep his leg kicking quiet. "Thanks. Yours too. Nice name."

Ivan laughs. He has a nice laugh.

Ugh, the internet's convinced Ivan's smitten with him but Till's not much better. He's so fucking gay (bi) for Ivan, but he needs to keep it cool unless he fumbles the bag. 

"Anyway, how's your night, Ivan?"

"Pretty uneventful, but oh! Today, Luka..."

The next morning, Till wakes up to the call still running. Eight hours, fifteen minutes, and seven seconds. Ivan's humming in the background, clearly getting ready for his day. So many people were praising deep lyrics and how ALNST wasn't afraid to break out of the mold

But we didn't write that song. We contributed nothing to it so it didn't feel like genuine praise

When our group started getting more traction, most were flocking for Luka because he was immediately eye-catching and his name was more well-known

I... hadn't established myself yet so I was scrambling to figure out my role in the group besides "the one who had a deep and sexy voice". In order to be recognizable, you needed a branding and mine was decided for me based on my appearances

We were more coworkers than friends at that point, so anytime I tried to tease them, they'd laugh awkwardly and brush it off

WHAT THE SHIT

"What's with the bag, Till?" 

"Hm?" Till glances down at the canvas bag slung over his shoulder. "Oh, just the music sheets." 

Ivan's brows furrow. Even with the cap over his hair and covering half his face, Till can tell he's narrowing his eyes at him. "Seriously? You brought them with you? I thought I told you this was meant to be a break from all the work."

Till scratches the back of his neck and averts his eyes. Why does he suddenly feel like a child getting scolded? "I figured a change of environment might be the thing that helps me with the writing. Plus, you were gonna be here so maybe it's easier to exchange ideas." 

"Hm," Ivan doesn't look convinced but he doesn't comment further. "Sit down, I already ordered something for us."

"You did?" Till slides into the seat opposite of him, glancing at the menu. "How'd you know what I wanted?"

"You said you liked samyeopsal so I ordered meat dishes," says Ivan. Which, yeah, fair. Till was going to order meat, but he doesn't like it when someone else makes the decisions for him. "And I ordered some vegetable dishes to balance it out. You can always order more if there's anything you didn't like, of course."

"Huh," Till chews on his lip. "Next time, let me order for myself when I get here." 

"Okay."

That was easy. Till begins to pull his folder and pencil out of his bag.

Ivan whistles. "Wow, that's a thick folder. Is it all for Mizi-nim's song?"

"Yeah. I ain't got the time to organize everything so all my ideas are here and there on every page," Till spreads out the pages he's currently working on. "See here, I like this part but the rest are going in the garbage. I need to copy that onto a fresh sheet before I toss this one out, but I'm lazy."

"I can copy them for you."

"Will you? That'll be a big help."

"Well, I'm here anyway so I might as well help you. I can't exactly offer musical help when I don't know anything about music theory," Ivan takes the sheets that Till offers him. "I'm only good for singing and tweaking stuff in the software."

"I can teach you. Later though," Till offers mindlessly, his non-sleep-deprived brain already working through a new version of the bridge. It's so much easier to think now when he's with company and not in the dimly lit space of his room. He should go out more often, but it's lame to chill at a cafe by himself like some kind of terminally single hermit. Maybe he can invite Ivan out more often? No, that's not a good idea. Ivan's going to get recognized in cafes, but he can probably offer places where they can meet up and work. Maybe a reserved room in a library? Wait, that sounds like a date. 

Wait, is this a date?

The door to their reserved room opens, revealing a waitress with plates of food. They thank her when she leaves and Till tries very hard not to think about dating Ivan. Shit, his palms are getting sweaty. Is the room getting warmer?

Fuck, take a chill pill, Till. You are NOT a virgin loser. 

"Till, you should eat," Ivan's smooth voice cuts in. Till swallows. 

"Oh, yeah, okay." Good job not stuttering. Keep at it. He takes a sip of his water and pretends that he isn't nervous. Ivan's eyes are oddly captivating for how bottomless they are, especially when they're staring at Till as he eats. Shit, why is this guy so handsome? Now he's getting self-conscious about the way he chews. 

"Oi, you eat too," Till grumbles out in between bites. Ivan smiles indulgingly and does just that, but he's not slick with his side glances. 

They make conversation and Till tries very hard not to fluster because he may have never been in a relationship, but he will not fold to the first pretty person who glances his way, okay? He has more dignity than that, even if this pretty person is the man of his (literal) dreams. He will take the metaphorical bull by its horns and be the coolest fucking bitch in this not-date. 

Eventually, they settle down and Till goes back to working on the song. It's both easier and harder. Easier because now he can focus on something other than how flawless Ivan's skin is, but harder because Ivan is right there and his attention keeps straying. It doesn't help that Ivan is genuinely helpful in offering advice. Till remembers reading somewhere that Ivan had a genius-level IQ or something, and he had thought it was just an exaggeration by the fans to make him more appealing but he's beginning to believe it because Ivan picks up on what Till's trying to convey scarily fast. Ivan didn't know jack shit besides intuitive guessing about the notes on paper and now he's offering advice on changing scales like he actually knows what the fuck a scale means.

Maybe that's how the other Ivan wrote his — their — song for that decisive round. He remembers vaguely, through the fog that all the memories of that time had over them, that Ivan had asked him for his input on that song. Till had carelessly written some lyrics and tossed them back to him because he couldn't be bothered to care, not after Mizi's disappearance and all the abuse he suffered at the hands of his masters. He didn't want to see Ivan for more than necessary — didn't want to see anyone at all. After all, if Mizi was dead, then what is the point of everything? 

If he had known it was going to be the last song Ivan would ever sing, he would have put more effort into it. 

This time, Ivan isn't the one writing the song. It's not even a song that they're going to sing together, just a song for Mizi — Mizi who is alive and well, who isn't his God or even in love with him, and he's fine with that. This time, Ivan doesn't know shit about songwriting and is instead looking over his shoulder and curiously asking for clarifications so he can give better input. 

Till is the one putting in most of the legwork for the score, but Ivan is present and eager to help. 

He's also disgustingly close. Till can almost feel his breath on his shoulder. Ugh, even across different lifetimes, Ivan has no sense of personal space. Till glances at him, only to quickly glance away because holy shit why is Ivan staring at him? (His eyelashes are so long). 

"You're too close," Till huffs. 

"You didn't mind it the first time," Ivan hums. He places a hand on Till's shoulder and smushes his cheek against it. "Ah, I think you should slow this part down."

Till breathes out and hopes his thundering heartbeat isn't audible. "Okay."

Two and a half weeks of Till working on both Mizi and Ivan's songs by himself, Ivan's schedule finally frees up. First thing the guy does? Call Till and beg to meet up again. 

It's only after Till's invited Ivan over to his apartment that he realizes a grave error: His fucking posters. His Ivan hoodies strewn all over the floor. His signed album sitting on his trophy shelf. Fuck, fuck fuck fuck? He doesn't know how long it takes for Ivan to get to his place from wherever the fuck the guy was before, but he scrambles to shove as much shit into his closet as possible (while taking care to not damage anything, he's not a fucking heathen). Then for good measure, he airs out the place by opening the windows for the first time since forever and vacuuming (thank you Mizi for buying it for him three months ago) as hard as he fucking can. That's a lot of fucks, but also not enough fucks to properly describe the situation.

In record time, the place looks cozy and livable, and not at all like it's been through a depressive episode. His heart is still pounding from the sudden exercise and adrenaline rush when the doorbell rings. Okay, shit, well, it's Go Time. 

"Hey," Till greets, in a very very chill way. 

"Hey?" Ivan waves back, in a very very handsome way. Holy shit, the man is dressed incognito but he pulls off the hobo look so well. Must be the shoulders. Till wants to be him, or be with him. Ivan pulls off the beanie and sunglasses, running a hand through his hair. He smiles winningly. With him, he quickly revises in his head, Till wants to be with him, definitely that. 

"Can I come in?" Ivan asks. Till blinks out of his stupor and shakes his head, then nods quickly. 

"NO, yeah, no, I mean yes you can come in," his face feels even hotter now. Jesus Christ, if this is what a tiny bit of exercise does to his brain, then he needs to get fit fast. He can't afford to fumble so fucking bad in front of Korea's Sweetheart like this. Till quickly ushers Ivan into his pristine, Ivan-merchless apartment before he makes a greater fool of himself. "Did you eat yet? Want anything to drink? I have unsweetened green tea and apple soju in my fridge, but I can brew some coffee if you want." 

"Water's fine!"

"Okay, wait here," he sits Ivan down on his couch and rushes off to the kitchenette. 

"You have a nice place, Till," Ivan hums from behind him as Till busies his hands. "It's very quaint."

Quaint? QUAINT? Isn't that rich people's word for 'small and poor-looking'? No, Ivan wouldn't insult him like that, right? Ivan already knows Till isn't world-famous-celebrity-rich. He's just an average guy with a moderate amount of talent that allows him to work from home. 

Till grumbles to himself before handing the glass of water to Ivan and heading to his bedroom to grab his materials. When he returns with his binder and laptop, Ivan's standing away from the couch and staring at the mural Till's painted on one of the walls. He turns at the sound of Till's footsteps, visibly brightens up, and rushes over to help him with the stuff in Till's hands.

Once they're sat down at the coffee table, Ivan sitting on the floor because he's too tall to bend over on the couch comfortably, Till nervously shows Ivan what he's done so far. He wants to tear his eyes away from any possible negative reaction but forces himself to watch as Ivan nods his head along to the music, eventually humming a part of it. Even if it's unfinished and not up to Till's standards, Ivan's unapologetically excited reaction does wonders for his admittedly fragile self-esteem. 

"That sounded really good," Ivan gushes, then goes into the details of what he thinks worked well and what could be tweaked. Till listens along, jotting down notes into the pages of his binder, and feels the tension unwind from his muscles.

It's both a relief and a dread for Ivan to be away. He no longer has anyone to bounce ideas off of, but now Ivan's not here to watch Till tear his hair out as he tries (and fails) to pour less of his heart into the song. 

No matter how many rewrites he did, he couldn't get rid of the longing that permeated the entirety of the song. He wasn't even sure if it was a romantic kind of longing — though it very much is considering his big, fat, gay feelings for Ivan.

It's just... he's certain that even if he wasn't crushing on Ivan like a lovesick schoolgirl, the song would turn out the fucking same. 

It's the same reason why he started the Cure account. He cares deeply for the people he's met in his past life, the one that no one but him remembers. He had been miserable in that life, but there were moments where the misery was slightly more bearable. Mizi, Sua, Ivan, and Hyuna, when he finally joined the rebellion, had made it worth it. He'd relive it all over again if given the choice, just to hug the people whose lives he took for granted.

At the end of his shitty thirty years in that world, he had been alone. No Sua. No Ivan. No Mizi. No Hyuna. He had many regrets, because who wouldn't in that fucked up situation? He wanted to thank Mizi for giving him a purpose, Hyuna for giving him a reason to fight, and Ivan — god, Ivan — for giving him a chance to even live that fucking long. Most of all though, he regretted not getting to know Ivan better. All he wished for in his last moments was a chance to apologize to the man who sacrificed it all just to keep Till alive for a few years more.

If he had been a better man, maybe he would have stretched his time a little longer to honor Ivan's wishes. But Till was no better than a fucking dog because he sure as fuck died like one.

When he woke up again, it was gradual and through hazy dreams. Maybe it was a second chance given by the Gods who abandoned humanity so long ago, or maybe it's just a coincidental shift of fate that allowed him this opportunity to reunite with everyone again, but Till would be a fool to let go of the chance to finally, finally connect with Ivan in a way he was never able to back then.

Ivan will be immortalized in the photo cutouts in his scrapbooks, in the blank canvases of his sketchbooks, and in the memories of everyone who sees Till's works online. He will not be the only one carrying Ivan’s memory this time — would never leave that responsibility to Mizi either. No, the world will witness Ivan’s glory with him. 

It's the sort of devotion that Mizi must have felt for Sua — the kind that slowly submerges you but you let it drown you because it's the warmest thing you've ever felt.

Maybe it was the sort of devotion that Ivan had felt for him.
