Chapter Text
“Thanks,” Logan flashed a wry smile at the barista, replacing his drink from the counter with some cash. He walked out of the tiny café and sat at one of the tables outside. Taking a sip, he was soon joined by his best friend.
“Hey,” Kick smiled, placing a hand on his shoulder to which was responded with a hum. Placing his small bag in the empty chair, Kick headed inside to get a drink.
Logan’s eyes were glued to the screen of his phone. Email announcements, important messages, assignment reminders. He only half-read all of them. The one notification bothering him the most was the one he hasn’t—no, refused, to click on.
He could feel his heart beating hard in his chest. Breaking away from his phone, he reached for his glass, only to realize with a slight surprise that Kick had returned to their table unnoticed.
“You alright?” Kick arched a brow. It was apparent he had been sitting there for quite some time.
“Yeah,” Logan almost mumbled as his lips made contact with the glass to drink.
“You’re a good liar, but I’m good at reading people,” Kick’s brow arched higher. “That hard look you’re giving me right now is called tense.”
Logan swallowed, folding his arms together as he leaned back. “Really? I thought I was well-known for my steely-eyed look.”
“I’m your best friend, so I know when you’re normal and when you’re not,” Kick snorted, finally tucking into his bagel. With a chunk of it in his mouth, he continued, “Besides, I saw you not focusing during the lecture earlier, which is something you never do.”
Logan stared for a few moments, then chuckled. “Alright, you got me.”
“So, what’s worrying you?” Kick asked. “Is it about your dad? You mentioned his company was in a little trouble.”
“Yeah, but my dad said that’s nothing to worry about anymore,” Logan waved it off. “They’re bringing someone in from the main office to help him sort things out here, and Dad is sure everything is gonna work out once that help arrives.”
“Well, that’s great,” Kick smiled, then guessed again. “So... not about your father. Maybe something with Hesh? You guys had a fight?”
Logan laughed. “We never do, and even if we did, it was never serious.”
“Right. I seem to remember you implying that you weren’t happy he was going on too many dates.”
“Yeah, well, that’s just because those dates of his are just excuses to get me to do his part of the house chores,” Logan rolled his eyes. “That, and he’s giving me a bad reputation. I can’t ever find a date if the name ‘Walker’ is equivalent to ‘local casanova and playboy’.”
Logan’s notification tune interrupted their conversation and the phone on his lap lit up. He glanced down at it, the muscles in his jaw tensing. Almost hesitantly, he reached down to his phone and turned off the screen.
Kick, ever-observant, became even more curious. “Maybe I’ve got things mixed up,” he said, one edge of his lips curving up into a half-smile. “Maybe it’s you who’s got a date tonight?”
That small look of surprise on Logan’s face gave him away.
“Wow, my baby Logan is going on a date!” Kick laughed, his expression a mix of astonishment and joy. “That’s great, man. I guess I understand how nervous you’d be. Who’s the lucky person?”
Logan hesitated, looking almost uncomfortable as he looked away. “Well…”
“What’s wrong? Not looking forward to it?”
“Not that, just…” Logan’s words faded. He maintained eye-contact with Kick for a few moments before shifting in his seat and leaning forward, elbows on the table. Clasping his hands together, Logan inhaled deeply. “It’s not a date. Not really.”
That surprised Kick. “What do you mean?”
Logan looked down. It was obvious he was searching for the right words. “Well… since Dad had trouble in his job, I’ve been looking for a way to help support the family until things get better,” he said slowly, “so, I found a good way to make money that might fit with our class schedule and I decided to try it out.”
“So, what, you’re meeting your would-be employer tonight?”
“That’s one way to put it,” Logan chuckled wryly, scratching the back of his head. “I’m going to meet a sugar daddy tonight.”
It took a few moments for that statement to sink in. “Wow,” Kick said finally, obviously not expecting that answer. He nodded, almost thoughtfully, and took another bite of his bagel. “So…”
“So, I’ll have to meet him to know what kind of…” Logan paused, “arrangements, he would like. To see if I could hit it off well with him, if his schedule fits with mine… and how much he’s willing to pay, of course.”
“Damn, I could see some really big money in that,” Kick grinned. “I’m glad you’re taking a step towards getting the bag. And hey, it’s still a date. Like a blind date. I hope you enjoy yourself.”
For some reason, Logan felt a little relieved. “Thanks. I wasn’t expecting you to take it so easily.”
“What? Of course I would,” Kick arched a brow as if Logan had told him something ridiculous. “The only concern I have is if you’d actually be careful enough.” There was a slight quiet, then he asked, “Does Hesh know?”
“Hell no,” Logan said quickly. “He doesn’t need to know. I don’t want him worrying about me. He gets too protective sometimes.”
“I get that,” Kick shrugged, understanding. “So, what do you know about this guy?”
“He’s new in town, and he wanted someone local who could show him what’s good and what’s not,” Logan said as he fiddled with a loose piece of thread on his jacket. “Not sure what he means by that though, whether he means nightclubs or fine-dining or sex, guess I’ll find that out soon enough. He’s also older than us, way older, but younger than Dad.”
Kick was painting a picture in his head. “How did you two get in contact?”
“Well, I already had an account for about a week or so,” Logan recalled. “Been building up the profile. There were several requests but they came on too strong, so I turned them down because I’m still new to the business. He was the only one that wasn’t so… straightforward, and we’ve been talking a few days now.”
“Rich?”
“Looks that way on his profile with the yachts and all,” Logan gave a short laugh. “He’s a CEO or something, not sure which company yet. At least, that’s what he claims, until I can verify it tonight.” After a short pause, he continued, “Oh, and just in case Dad or Hesh ask me where I’m going, I’ll be pulling out your name as a cover story.”
“Sure. Just bear in mind I'm going to the Go-Kart track tonight.”
“That’s great,” Logan grinned. “If everything works out, I’ll tell you when I’m meeting him and for how long, so you can cover me just in case. For today, it’ll only be until midnight.”
“That works,” Kick nodded. “You sure you’re gonna be alright tonight?”
“Yeah… I hope so. I searched online for some tips and I’m taking all the necessary precautions.”
“I trust you, but stay safe anyway,” Kick said as he finished the bagel and downed the rest of his drink as Logan followed suit. “Now, reply to his text or else you won’t be able to focus on anything for this evening’s class.”
Logan hesitantly opened the message he had been avoiding since the morning. ‘Looking forward to meeting you , ’ it read. ‘I’m sure we’ll get along better off-screen .’
Perhaps it was just nervousness, but Logan couldn’t help but wonder what he meant by off-screen. Just normal conversation? Something more? Logan swallowed. He had no idea why he was so anxious.
‘I think so too,’ he typed in, not sure what else he could say. But Kick was already walking off, so Logan turned off the screen and chased after him.
Keegan liked the place the restaurant had saved for him: a cozy table with a small candle and rose in the middle, with the bar not so far from them. The restaurant was well-lit, well-decorated, and filled with the hushed sea of voices of people enjoying an evening of fine-dining. He had always wanted to eat here.
He turned down the waitress, motioning the empty chair opposite him. She politely withdrew, and it wasn’t even two minutes later when Keegan saw who he wanted to see.
Standing just outside the glass walls of the restaurant, Logan was much taller than he expected. Almost as tall as himself. Dressed in smart-casual clothes that fit well to his body, he certainly looked very attractive.
Logan peered into the restaurant, not seeing Keegan in the mass of people. He could see the other’s face clearly. Attractive, indeed.
There was a small line outside, and Keegan motioned for the workers to direct him inside. Logan seemed confused at first, but it wasn’t long before he was walking towards him, a somewhat embarrassed smile on his face.
“Hi,” Logan said as he sat down, pulling his chair closer to the table. “Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise,” Keegan smiled as the waitress approached them again. He spoke to her, obviously already knowing what he wanted for the night. The other was quiet as she bowed respectfully and then withdrew. “Hope you like red wine.”
“Looking forward to liking it,” Logan smiled, almost self-consciously. Now that was a voice that could melt anybody like butter. “Guess you ordered the whole package?”
“Fine-dining is a multi-course meal,” Keegan leaned back, eyes watching him as one of the workers came up and poured them both a glass.
Logan stared at it for a few moments, as if unsure what to do. Keegan couldn’t help but smile a little. “First time drinking wine?”
“Never could afford it before, really,” Logan said, eyes meeting his as he returned the smile. “But you’re gonna find out that I have a lot of firsts.”
Keegan chuckled, a warm sound from somewhere deep in his chest. “Good to know.”
There was a small pause in the conversation as Keegan took a sip, and then Logan realized what he implied. “Oh! I mean… I don’t mean…” he broke eye contact, face slowly tinting pink.
“It’s alright,” Keegan was amused by the other’s awkwardness as Logan attempted to hide his blush by drinking some wine.
At that moment, their appetizers arrived, giving him time to recover. Before they started their meal, Logan asked, “So… what kind of business does your company do?”
Keegan ate a bite or two, keeping his eyes on the other the whole time. Then he said, “Wouldn’t you like to talk about something other than work, when we’re together?”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Logan seemed embarrassed.
“Don’t be,” Keegan’s voice was as smooth as silk. “There’s no right or wrong when you’re with me. I just prefer focusing on relaxation instead of remembering about work.”
“Yeah, me too,” Logan said, then paused as if thinking of what to say. “Uhm…”
There was something endearing about his cluelessness. Keegan tilted his head slightly. “You’ve never done this before, have you?”
For a moment, Logan looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Then his surprised expression melted into a small ironic smile. “Oh no, what gave me away? The nervousness, or the nervousness?”
Keegan laughed, and Logan added, “I’m sorry that I’m so awkward. I promise this isn’t who I really am, Mr Russ.”
“Call me Keegan,” he leaned forward, placing a hand over Logan’s on the table. The other’s eyes went to their hands, the blush returning faintly. Then their gazes met, and he blushed harder. “Look, you don’t have to pretend when you’re with me. I look forward to getting to know you... Logan.”
“…me too,” Logan replied shyly, as Keegan gave a small squeeze before pulling his warm hand back.
They started to really get into their meal, talking in between bites over various topics, almost cautiously avoiding going subjects of work and family. They spoke about other restaurants in the area, the local attractions, the weather so far, scientific discoveries and recent news. The smooth-flowing conversation, interrupted by some laughs and jokes, continued until they completed the main course.
By then, it was obvious they both had gotten more comfortable with each other.
“You’re really smart,” Keegan commented, as the waitress took their empty dishes away. “Guess that’s another bonus to your good looks and innocence.”
“Innocence?” Logan repeated, flustered. He must be thinking of all the implications that word could mean.
Keegan chuckled. “Your honesty. You’re opening up to me, becoming more of yourself. I like people who are honest like that.”
“Oh,” Logan obviously wasn’t expecting that answer.
The dessert arrived and the waitress refilled their glasses. When she was gone, one edge of Keegan’s lips curved upwards into a small smile. “I know what you’re thinking.”
“You do?” Logan’s face turned a shade pinker.
“You’re really worried about the more… personal side of being a sugar baby, aren’t you?”
“I am?”
Keegan laughed. “Yes, quite obviously. So, I’ll tell you what I’m looking for,” he paused. “I’m looking for a friend to follow me on dates. Somebody who’s willing to have fun and go out without reminding me of work. You’re a local, you’re attractive, you’re sincere and you can keep a conversation. Bottom line: you tick all my boxes.”
“Of course,” Logan nodded, as though not expecting the compliments. He tasted some of the dessert and Keegan did the same. “Does that mean… you want to see me again another day?”
“I don’t know,” Keegan kept his eyes on Logan’s. “I’d like to. Do you?”
“Well, I like who you are, so why not?”
“Really?” Keegan arched a brow, amused. “Who am I?”
The question caught Logan off guard. “Uh…”
“I’m kidding,” Keegan chuckled. “That depends on my schedule, which changes by the week. I’m only consistently free on Friday evening to Saturday noon. Even my Sundays aren’t guaranteed to be free of conference calls or updates.”
“Oh, well, Friday nights are alright by me,” Logan thought for awhile. “Tuesday and Wednesday nights work too because I don’t have morning lectures the next day. My schedule won’t change until the end of the semester, so you can guarantee I’m free those times.”
“That’s good. I have things to settle here, so I’ll be busy, but I’ll clear my schedule for Friday night in two weeks. Maybe after that, I’ll try meeting you once each week, if I’m in town.”
“Sounds good.”
“So… how much would you like?”
Logan took a few moments to process that question. “What do you mean?”
“Your monthly allowance,” Keegan said, amused. “Or did you forget this wasn’t just a normal date?”
“Oh, right,” Logan mentally facepalmed. He had forgotten this was technically a business date. Something about that just didn’t sit right with him. “Guess I’ve been having too much fun with the handsome stranger and his velvet voice.”
“I’m flattered,” Keegan smirked. “And… no amount of fun is too much.”
Logan pondered for some time. “I… actually don’t know how much I could ask for. How much do sugar babies usually as for?”
Keegan said nothing for awhile, the amused look never leaving his eyes. Then, he leaned forward and offered, “How about $6000 for now?”
“$6000?” Logan’s jaw effectively dropped to the floor.
“We’ll raise the price higher if I continue enjoying your company in future dates,” Keegan said, mistakening his surprise for distaste. “I’ll transfer the final amount into your account at the end of the month.”
“I…”
“I’ll give you a little something after each date as a thank you, and surely, just tell me the price if you see anything you want,” Keegan leaned back, fingers on each hand interlocked. “If every date of ours is as entertaining as this one, you’ll make me quite a happy man. And I intend to do the same for you.”
“$6000 is too much,” Logan’s eyebrows furrowed. “And you didn’t even ask for anything more than just going out together. I can’t accept that.”
That response surprised Keegan. Personally, he assumed the amount was quite low. “Then?”
“Well…” Logan frowned. “I don’t know.”
“You’re adorable, you know that?” Keegan smiled, finishing up his dessert. “Since you’re not sure, take some time to think about it.”
“That’s better.”
As the two of them finally completed their eating, Logan fished around his pockets for his wallet. “How much do I have to pay?” he asked, secretly dreading the price he knew he couldn’t afford.
“I already arranged for payment beforehand,” Keegan said casually, standing up from his seat. “You didn’t think I’d make you contribute a cent, did you? That wouldn’t be very polite.”
“Oh,” was all Logan managed to say, feeling a little dumb as he followed Keegan out the entrance. The night was dark and cool.
“Do you need a ride home?” Keegan offered, glancing at his companion. He was right—Logan was as tall as him, albeit just an inch or so shorter.
“No need, I came on a bike,” Logan declined politely, pointing to a motorcycle parked across the street. “Thanks for the offer. And for paying for the meal. I can’t imagine how much that must have costed.”
“When you’re with me, there is no such thing as you paying,” Keegan remarked.
“Oh… well, I guess I’m not so used to it. That wasn’t how I was raised.”
A smile formed on Keegan’s face. “First time having someone cover all the costs?”
“Yeah,” Logan admitted with a smile matching his.
“I’m looking forward to being there with you when achieve the rest of your… firsts,” Keegan placed a hand on the other’s shoulder, almost carefully. “I’ve had a pleasant night. It might be safe to say this is the first real relaxation I’ve had since I arrived in the city.”
“That’s a great compliment considering this is my first time going on a real date,” Logan grinned, although he was acutely aware of that warm hand on his body. “I’m looking forward to seeing you again.”
Keegan paused a bit at Logan mentioning about this being his first date, but decided he wouldn’t continue the topic. “Why don’t you choose where we’ll go next time?”
“I could do that, but I don’t know what you like.”
“Don’t worry about that,” he assured. “You’re the local guide here. If you’re enjoying yourself, I’m sure I’ll enjoy myself, too.”
“…if you say so,” Logan felt ridiculously happy. His mind flooded with all kinds of places he always wanted to go to but never could. “I’ve got a good list, if that’s the case.”
“That’s what I like to hear.” Then, an elegant car pulled up on the street in front of them. “That’s my cue,” Keegan said, his voice a tad apologetic as Logan watched the driver exit the car and open the door. “Have a safe drive home.”
“Oh, you too,” Logan replied, managing to mask his surprise.
Keegan gave him another one of his attractive smiles before the door closed. Logan watched the car recede into the distance. When it was finally gone from sight, he let out a low and long whistle.
Guess he caught a bigger fish than he expected. This is one hell of a story to tell Kick.
He mounted his bike and started the engine, fixing the helmet over his head, just when his phone vibrated in his pocket. Taking it out from his pocket, Keegan had sent him a few messages.
‘Thanks for tonight. You’re cute, kid. Hope I wasn’t too boring. Here’s a little thank-you to keep you around.’
The next message was a screenshot. Logan almost had a heart attack when he saw it.
A confirmed transfer of $2000 into his account.
He didn’t know how long he was staring at the screen, because he was in utter disbelief. In just a few hours, he made more money than the average employee does working in a month.
Tucking the phone back into his pocket, Logan backed the bike out of his parking spot and joined the cars on the street to home. This wasn’t what he expected—it’s much better. Humorously, he thought that his luck is finally starting to work out.
This was something he could get used to.

Chapter Text
Logan walked into the kitchen of his home and stopped in his tracks at the pile of dishes in the sink. "Hesh!" he called out, annoyed, leaning out of the kitchen arch door to glower at the stairs. "Dad is going to freak when he sees this mess in kitchen."
Silence ensued for a few moments, then he heard the thud of footsteps coming down the stairs, followed by the strong musk of Hesh's cologne. Logan immediately groaned. "No, don't tell me you have a date right now," he complained, just as his older brother appeared. Sure enough, he looked like he was about to go out.
"You know me, always booked and busy," Hesh winked, eliciting an eyeroll from his brother. Hesh ruffled Logan's hair, barely missing the irritated swat of his arm. "I expect that you'll cover those dishes for me... as usual."
"Just get out of here before I hand you your ass," Logan threatened, ignoring the laugh that was given in response and immediately attending to the dishes in the sink as the front door closed. He wondered whether Hesh would be home early to prepare for the next day, or perhaps his older brother would skip out on his Monday classes as he so usually did.
It had been two days since Logan went on his first date (business meeting, technically) on that cold Friday evening. There was no contact with his mysterious employer so far, whereas Kick had been too absorbed in his Go-Kart racing competition over the weekend to listen to his adventures. Good thing he was due to stop by the house any moment now.
As if on cue, the door opened. "I'm home," Kick called out, earning a scoff from his best friend. Identifying that Logan was in the kitchen, he dumped his bag on the bar counter, propped up on the stool and slumped over the counter. "Man, I am beat."
"What, you didn't win?" Logan asked, not looking over his shoulder.
"I meant that I'm tired... you know I never lose," he said defiantly, although a little out of breath. He sounded tired, which was not surprising given how dedicated the man was to his Go-Kart club. He would spend hours on the track, from noon until dusk. "Besides, the competition is in six weeks. It was just training."
Logan finished up his chores right then and poured a cold glass of water for both of them. Kick chugged on it like it was the first drop of water he had all day.
"If it's in six weeks, why train so soon?" Logan asked.
"That's what I've been dying to tell you since I found out Friday night," Kick said excitedly, but not before sighing out a 'thank you' at the drink. With enthusiasm, he continued, "There's this privately-funded Go-Kart team that wants to race us. We looked up their records and they're serious. Thing is, they want to race at our track! Three training sessions in six weeks is kind of intense, but we're not going to lose them at home."
They spent some minutes in silence for Kick to catch his breath, and in that time, their glasses were refilled. Logan was always happy for Kick to treat the Walker abode as his second home, since it was closer to the Go-Kart track compared to the college-sponsored boarding rooms Kick lived in with seven other roommates. Kick emptied his glass out, then said, "I saw Hesh passing me by on the road just now."
"Yeah, another one of his stupid dates," Logan grimaced. "Why else would I be washing the dishes?"
"Where's your dad?"
"Not home yet. Emergency meeting. Been out for a few hours now."
"Great, so that means the coast is clear for you to tell me all about your date with the rich mystery man?" Kick grinned slyly, leaning in, and waggling his eyebrows. "Was it just like in the movies? Romantic moonlight, lots of wine, first kiss?"
Logan chuckled and playfully shoved Kick away. "Don't be ridiculous, it was completely normal," he explained. "You were right about lots of wine though." He went on to explain how the date went; the handsome stranger, the pleasant conversation, the polite remarks, the modest standards that had been set out for him, and finally, the big money.
"What!" Kick's jaw dropped, surprised and excited as though it was him who received the cash. "That's a shitload! What does he work as?"
"Well... he said he doesn't like talking about work with me," Logan shrugged. "I figured that might have been a red flag, but seeing his money is actually legit, does it matter?"
"Maybe he's married," Kick quipped, giving his friend food for thought.
"Possible," Logan mused. "He did say he was single, though. I don't really think he's lying."
"Yeah... as long whatever he's hiding doesn't get you in trouble, and you keep getting paid, then that's fine by me."
Kick was an idiot 98% of the time, but Logan wondered whether his friend ever realized the wisdom in some of his off-hand comments.
"So, what did you do with the money?" Kick asked.
"I paid a little bit of those outstanding tuition fees," Logan recalled. "Oh, and I finally had enough money to order that expensive-as-shit textbook for my Statistics class."
Just at that moment, the door opened again. This time, Elias walked through, dressed in a smart casual outfit, with a coffee in one hand and a suitcase in the other. Some files were pinned under his arm, and his hair looked a little messy. Since the arch of the kitchen was right next to the entrance, he saw his son immediately.
"Logan, Clarence," Elias nodded at the two of them. "Where's Hesh?"
"Out," Logan replied, and watched as his father hurriedly walked down the hall. Probably to his study room, to put away all his work-related items.
Then another person walked in through the door. It was Merrick, a coworker to Elias and close family friend. "Boys," he smiled warmly as he took off his shoes and entered the kitchen.
"Merrick," Logan smiled back, pouring a glass of water for him. "How was the meeting?"
"A little frustrating," Merrick admitted, wiping some sweat on his sleeve as he accepted and sipped on the drink. "Your father thought calling in an old friend from the main branch would make all our problems go away... well, seems like even an insider's got rules to adhere to. Nothing to worry about, though. Everything should be fine within a week or two, and we could start picking up from there."
Elias popped into the kitchen. "Hey Merrick, study room," he said, fumbling with his wallet. Finally, he pulled out a wad of cash and handed it out to Logan. "Here, son. You said something about a textbook last week?"
Kick tried not to react. Logan blinked, stared at the money, then finally realized what his father was talking about. "Oh, you mean for my Statistics class," Logan laughed nervously. "Well... uh... I already got it."
"What?" Elias was visibly confused. "How?"
Logan's mind raced for an excuse. He really should have come up with an alibi beforehand. Curse him for forgetting that he had even told his father about it in the first place.
"One of our seniors gave it to him," Kick suddenly piped in, effectively saving the day. "Donated it, really. He'll be getting it tomorrow."
"Oh, I see," Elias still looked doubtful. "Why so hesitant to tell me that?"
Logan swallowed as Kick once again butted in. "That's because the senior is a she," he grinned, elbowing Logan playfully. The blond 'oof'ed as his friend continued, "He's just too shy to admit that he caught the eye of an older girl."
Elias peered at them suspiciously, before handing Logan the cash anyway. "Pay some of the I.O.U. you have with the administration center about your tuition fees," he said, "and send that senior of yours my thanks." Merrick chuckled and walked out to make his way towards the study room for more business talk, whereas Elias paused at the kitchen entrance. "By the way," he pointed at Logan. "Make sure you buy that girl something nice in return."
Logan and Kick were silent until they heard the door of the study room close. The blond sighed, not realizing he had been holding his breath.
"You're terrible at excuses," Kick eyeballed his friend from the corner of his eyes.
"I know," Logan hid his face in his hands. "Thanks for covering me."
"Anytime," Kick whistled. "So, video games?"
For the next two weeks, Logan avoided messaging Keegan until after 9pm, and even then he did it periodically. There was a request for a video call one week after their restaurant date, and he was convinced he couldn't handle himself staring straight at Keegan's face like that without being able to look anywhere else. How blessed does one have to be to have that face and that voice at the same time? The way Keegan sounded mentioning his name sent shivers down his spine, especially with that voice in his ears due to the earphones.
Now, however, Logan was standing in front of a boulevard leading to the entrance of a mall. Just across the street was the beach, and he could see the line where the sky met the sea. Palm trees ruffled in the wind. It was 5pm on a Friday evening, exactly two weeks since first meeting Keegan. As promised, Keegan had freed up his schedule to spend some time with him.
'I want to feel normal,' he told Logan over the video call, his messy hair still damp from a shower. His eyes were especially blue on the screen, given the contrast of the dark bedroom. 'People always coming to me to make decisions, give advice... tiring. I want to go somewhere, feel like another person in the crowd. A place with no rush.'
'I know just where to go,' Logan had smiled.
The blond grimaced, now suddenly regretting his quick-wit reply. Was it really the most creative idea, taking him to a shopping mall of all places? Before he could lament his poor choice, Keegan's name flashed on his phone screen and Logan picked up the call.
"I'm standing in front of a... bistro, I think," his date said.
Logan's eyes wandered across the street. "Oh, you'll have to cross the road," he mentioned, then paused once he identified Keegan. He waved his arms, so his date could see him.
It wasn't long before they were united in front of the boulevard. Keegan glanced back at the view of the sea. "This place has some nice scenery," he commented, then smiled at Logan. "Some attractive people, too."
"You look different," Logan sort of blurted out, which received an arched brow in response. Mentally, he facepalmed, realizing that his sudden remark had nothing to do with what Keegan said earlier. "It's a good different, I mean... well... about the scenery, yeah, it's nice."
Keegan looked down at his shirt, as though to double check what he was wearing. Logan's eyes followed suit. It was a polo shirt, paired with a pair of tan shorts and mute-coloured sports shoes. The only thing that seemed out of place with his casual outfit was the gleaming silver he had for a watch. "This is different?" he asked, amused.
"You still look very handsome," Logan assured, almost stammered as he recalled the restaurant where Keegan had worn a dress shirt, vest and blazer like a casual version of a tuxedo. "It's just nice to see you without so many layers."
He stopped there, and the amusement in Keegan's eyes grew.
"Wait," Logan felt his face heat up. "I did not mean anything dirty by that."
"I know," Keegan chuckled. "Still, keep complimenting me and you'll probably be seeing lesser layers in the future."
Logan couldn't maintain the eye contact anymore and pointed towards the mall to compose himself. "Okay so, you're looking at the most popular mall in the city," he explained, acutely aware of how Keegan was looking at him instead of the building. "Sure there are lots of other places, but this one is king. You want to be normal, right? Then let's go in and pretend to be one of the families strolling around."
They began walking towards the entrance. "I wasn't expecting this," Keegan said, and Logan mentally jumped at the warm hand that laced with his. "But it feels right."
Did the temperature suddenly rise? Logan felt like he was about to pass out from all the heat. He imagined if Kick could see him now, the bastard would be laughing his ass off. Which is something Logan totally deserves. What was he, a schoolgirl?
"Shopping... lots of people take it for granted," Keegan mused as they walked through the large doors. "There's a leisurely, liberating feeling that comes with shopping. I usually always have to get my items delivered, or custom-made. Too busy to go out." Small silence, then: "Make sure you point out anything you like to me."
They walked for some time, and a couple of hours flew by very quickly. Keegan took his time browsing every shop that mildly interested him, be it clothes, books or gift shops. Logan enjoyed himself as well, taking pride in how much his date was having fun.
"Do you have your own pen?" Keegan asked as they were walking, fingers intertwined.
"Of course I do," Logan replied, mildly confused. "Pens are a requirement for lectures."
"I imagine they are," Keegan chuckled, amusement glinting in his eyes. He gestured a nearby shop. "I meant a fountain pen."
Logan glanced at the store. It was selling high-end pens of all types, the kind that businessmen and philanthropists used to sign contracts and cheques. His cheeks heated up at how badly he misunderstood Keegan's question.
"Oh, that kind of pen," he sputtered, laughing nervously. "I definitely don't. Prices are way beyond me."
"Well, how about I give you one?"
Surprised, Logan's first instinct was to politely decline. "There's no--" he stopped himself there, suddenly wondering if declining Keegan's offer would offend him. To steer to safer waters, he cleared his throat and said, "How about... something I'll really need everyday?"
"Such as?"
His mind raced. He glanced to the side and saw a store having major sales. "Oh, I need a new hoodie," he said, leading his date in that direction and away from the very expensive pens. "Yeah. Weather's been a little chilly lately and my brother's basically taken all my hoodies."
They entered the store, and Logan began (or pretended) to browse. Despite the sale, he grimaced at the above-average prices. Some part of him felt guilty at even having the ability to freely spend someone else's money. Perhaps it just wasn't how he was raised.
Still, it was obvious that one of Keegan's wishes was to buy him something. Since he was technically Keegan's employee, he felt obliged to fulfil those wishes.
After some time browsing, Logan finally found a price tag that sat right with him. "Yes, this is exactly what I wanted," he exclaimed, picking out a bomber jacket from the selection.
"Are you sure?" Keegan asked curiously. "I thought you said you wanted a hoodie."
"Hoodies and jackets do the same thing, so it's not big of a deal."
Keegan took a look at the price tag and hummed thoughtfully. "You could take one more if you want."
"No, one is enough," Logan insisted, perhaps a little too fast. He mentally facepalmed. He was terrible at keeping his cool. "If I buy more, they'll just disappear in my house."
Keegan eyed him. "You're not choosing that just because it's the cheapest in the store, are you?"
Logan could almost feel a bead of sweat break on his forehead. "It is?" he pretended to be surprised, then grinned. "All the more to want it, then. Makes me happier."
Keegan did not immediately reply. He maintained his amused look just long enough for Logan to feel self-conscious. "That's good. I like seeing you happy. You've got a great smile."
The straightforward, sudden and romantically simple compliment was unforeseen, and there was no stopping the pink blush and shy smile. "...thank you."
Keegan winked and took the jacket away to the counter. Logan felt butterflies in his stomach as his date lined up for purchase.
Seeing Keegan's satisfaction in getting him something, and with the subtle hints that insisted Logan should get more items, the blond utilized his fast thinking skills to direct Keegan away from expensive stores and towards large sales, always convincing Keegan that the items were essential (and just so happened to be the cheapest item in the store, of course).
Just half an hour before sunset, Logan was already carrying a large paper bag of items. Simple articles of clothing that were sold cheap due to minor defects, a pair of branded earphones that were at half price because the store was moving out, crayolas with that sharpener at the back in the bookstore's "Return to School!" promotional sales. Despite the curious looks from Keegan, it was obvious the older man felt good at filling up Logan's bag anyway.
As of now, Logan was standing on the side, out of the invisible highway of passers-by, watching Keegan line up for ice cream, holding the bag of Logan's items in his hand just a small distance away. He stood with his head high, shoulders squared, with an easy, relaxed look in his eyes. Keegan really was so attractive. Most importantly, he was respectful.
Did Logan just get lucky for his first time? Logan smiled to himself and leaned back, completely relaxed, even when Hesh's voice suddenly piped up out of nowhere. "Logan?"
Logan nearly jumped out of his own skin. Hesh's neutral look broke into a wide grin. "Hey, look at that, my little brother is actually out of the house," he teased. "I was wondering when you were finally gonna leave and get some Vitamin D."
"Vitamin D?" Logan sputtered incredulously. In his confusion and rising panic, he couldn't understand.
"Yeah... Vita-D... from the sun?" Hesh arched a brow, then grinned. "Oh, or are you more interested in getting a different type of Vita-D?"
"Don't be ridiculous," Logan snapped, embarrassed when a girl popped up from behind Hesh and giggled at his joke. Must be one of his dates. "What the hell are you doing here?"
His brother threw his arm over the girl's shoulders. "I'm showing a little lady some good time. What about you? Who are you with?"
Logan didn't dare himself to even so much as glance in Keegan's direction. He prayed hard that Keegan didn't look over his shoulder. Besides, looking in Keegan's direction was something Hesh would be sure to notice. On the other hand, saying that he was here alone didn't make sense. His brother was mischievous, not stupid.
"I'm here with Kick," he replied as calmly as possible.
"Oh? Where is he?" Hesh looked around. "I thought he had go-kart training this weekend."
"He finished early," Logan lied, and continued to lie. "He just had to go to the bathroom. I'm out here waiting for him."
"Really?" Hesh arched a brow, suspicion growing on his face. "You're waiting awfully far away from the nearest restroom."
They stared at each other for about two seconds before Logan rolled his eyes and sighed, "Who cares, Kick could just call me if he's lost. Just get back to your date, you're gonna bore her." He hoped his fake annoyance masked his growing anxiousness.
"Wow, someone's a little moody today," Hesh huffed, then turned around. "Yeah yeah, girls don't know the word 'bored' when they're with me." Much to Logan's relief, Hesh walked off with his date on his arm. "Say hi to Kick then."
With that, his brother disappeared into the crowd. Logan let out a breath he didn't realize he had been holding, and finally glanced back over to Keegan. He was just passing cash to the cashier and receiving an ice cream cone. The blond was flooded with relief. Lady Luck really was on his side.
"I don't remember the last time I actually had ice cream," Keegan remarked as he came close enough for Logan to hear. He had already taken a few licks, reducing the creamy swirl into a smooth, spherical ball of chocolate. He was about to take another lick when he suddenly asked, "Are you alright? You look tense."
"What?" Logan blinked, then smiled reassuringly. "No, just thinking. Let's get out of here."
As quickly as he could, Logan basically pushed Keegan out of the mall. A part of him felt bad for slightly rushing, but he just couldn't be at peace so long as they were in that building. At least Keegan managed to finished his ice cream by then.
Finally, they were out on the boulevard, at the side of the street where they had met up. This time the sky was a melting gradient of yellow, orange and red.
Desperate for a way to gracefully end their date, Logan spotted the beachside bar across the street. Keegan's gaze went the same direction. Logan didn't have to say anything for the older man to read his mind.
"A sunset by the beach?" his eyes gleamed with amusement.
"Yeah, aren't I romantic?" Logan grinned, but that smug look of his froze on his face the moment he saw something familiar over Keegan's shoulder. It was Hesh again, separated from them by just a few rows of walking pedestrians, laughing at something that was probably his own joke.
All he had to do was look up, and Logan would be caught.
"Are you alright?" Keegan looked concerned, just about to turn to look behind him.
Without thinking, Logan put his hand up to cradle Keegan's jaw to redirect his eyes back to him. "I'm okay," the blond assured to the other's icy blue eyes, letting out an abrupt, short laugh of adrenaline. His mind raced to think of what he could say to distract Keegan. "I'm okay, just... wow, you're so handsome."
Keegan's eyebrows arched almost immediately at the unexpected comment. From the corner of his eyes, Logan could see Hesh turn around in the opposite direction, and mentally he sighed in relief.
"I... appreciate your bluntness," Keegan replied, his voice washing away the last dose of high running through Logan's veins.
And with that, it dawned on Logan just what he actually did: how close he was to Keegan, and how boldly he was maintaining the intimate touch. He could feel, on his fingertips, the stubble that was starting to grow under the jaw, and the movements of his facial muscles as the other smiled.
Logan immediately felt embarrassed and tried as calmly as possible to retract his hand. Just as he began slowly pulling away, Keegan caught his wrist. Logan was sure his face was a shade of pink. "I'm sorry... I... don't normally touch people like that," he stammered, his heart running circles in his chest.
But then he noticed something a little uncharacteristic of Keegan. It was there on his cheeks. Very faintly, there were hints of a blush.
"I like it," Keegan replied, smiling as he brought Logan's hand down and interlaced their fingers. "If you don't normally touch people like that, well... I'm happy to know I'm special."
Logan wondered if he was visibly trembling. Keegan's eyes were locked on his, and this eye contact was absolutely unbearable -- even worse than their video call mini-date. There was shyness, and excitement, but also a fuzzy feeling at hearing Keegan's sweet response. Damn, Logan really has it bad for this man, and it was only their second date.
Keegan chuckled. It was obvious he's got Logan wrapped around his little finger. "Now... how about a drink?"
Logan's shyness melted into a happy smile, replacing the embarrassment with a warm flood of giddiness. "Gladly," he replied, and hand-in-hand, they crossed the street to the bar.

To be honest this was supposed to be longer, but this chapter has gotten too long for my liking so I decided to move things over to the next one.

Chapter 3: The Bar
Notes:
I KNOW this doesn't look good--- three updates in three years, huh💀💀
My draft of ideas for how I planned this story to go is sometimes too good for me to resist, though.

Chapter Text
They sat down together on a small table right at the edge of the beach bar, facing the sea. Typical beach-fun music played on the speakers, mixing with the soft hum and bustle of a moderately crowded restaurant. The sunset bathed the entire coast in orange.
Logan took a sip of his tropical, non-alcoholic drink, eyes on his partner. Keegan was admiring the scenery, his eyes absent and relaxed. A gentle smile was resting on his lips. He looked absolutely majestic, sunkissed like this.
Obviously, Logan wasn't the only one who thought so. Some girls at a nearby table were stealing glances at Keegan as well, giggling and laughing amongst themselves. For some ridiculous reason, Logan felt a bit of pride.
'Yeah, I can't believe he's my date either,' he thought, hiding a smirk behind his glass as he took another sip. He side-eyed the ladies before joining them in admiring Keegan. 'So I guess this is how people feel like when they go out with someone attractive.'
He continued sipping his drink, only as a way to stop himself from smiling more. Half of him was embarrassed for feeling so proud (because it's not like they were an actual couple), whereas the other half was simply enjoying the moment.
Then he realised Keegan was looking at him, and he almost choked on his drink.
"W-What is it?" Logan sputtered, obviously embarrassed at having been caught staring. "Something on my face?"
Keegan smirked; a smirk of somebody who knew they had someone wrapped around their finger. "Not at all. Just curious what you were looking at while I was enjoying the scenery."
Logan knew there was no way out of this one, so might as well tell the truth. Even if it was risky... like sending a risky text, but a live-action version.
"I was also enjoying a nice view," he shrugged, trying to act nonchalant. "Both of us were looking at different things, but both of those things were pretty."
In his mind, he was already lamenting his cringy words (which he felt were cringy only because it was him who said them). He wasn't sure what type of response to even expect from Keegan.
But he wasn't expecting Keegan to look surprised.
"What?" Logan asked, his nervousness rising as he reflected back on what part of his pick-up line was inappropriate. "Was it something I said?"
Uncharacteristically, Keegan looked away, clearing his throat in a gesture that was almost bashful. "I've received a lot of compliments, but nobody's ever called me pretty."
Logan blinked at him, abruptly realising that he did, in fact, refer to a man much older than him as 'pretty'. Oh god, he sucked at flirting. "I'm sorry. I didn't realise---"
"No, it was actually nice to hear," Keegan reassured, this time leaning forward and taking the other man's hand. "It's not a rehearsed compliment given for the sake of the date, or given for the sake of seducing me. I like it."
Logan flushed. Not because of the way Keegan was holding his fingers so delicately like he was made of glass; not because of the way Keegan looked at him with eyes so relaxed and pleased that it made his heart race; not because of the brush of leg he could feel under the table. But because of Keegan's words.
It was true that Logan was sincere in whatever he said, but he didn't realise how much his sincerity made it so damn obvious that he liked Keegan.
At that moment, Keegan's phone rang. Logan was startled, but Keegan seemed displeased as he dug into his pocket and looked at the screen.
"I know it's not polite for me to take a call," Keegan said, looking at Logan apologetically. "But this will just take a moment."
"Oh, I don't mind."
Keegan stood up and walked off, bringing the phone to his ear. It wasn't even five minutes later when he returned. "I'm sorry about that."
Logan smiled. "It's fine. What, was it work?"
"Yeah," Keegan replied, looking away wryly. "I'd rather not talk about it."
For a moment, Logan wondered why Keegan looked so uncomfortable, and he unwillingly remembered Kick's suspicion of where the money came from. Though, it wouldn't be a good idea to talk about work if it was clear his date didn't want to.
Luckily, before Logan could say anything, the waiter brought their dinner.
The tense mood that had fallen between them slowly faded away as they indulged in the delicious cuisine and idle chatter, which was the perfect way to end their date. Before long, Logan was standing outside the bar as Keegan got into a black car.
This time, he rolled down the window. "I had a good time. I hope we meet again soon."
Logan found himself liking that idea. "Yeah, me too... I'm free any time, so just let me know when you want to meet again," he said, grinning as he held up his paper bag of stuff. "And thanks for all of this. I really appreciate it."
"Glad to hear it," Keegan smirked, rolling up his window. "Have a safe ride home."
Logan waved at the car as it receded into the distance, all the while not realising his lovestruck grin was still plastered on his face. When the car was finally gone, he took a moment to reflect on the night. Though there were too many close calls with Hesh, and there was that one awkward moment right before they ate, he thought the date was a success.
His phone notification rang. He thought it was from Hesh, but his heart jumped when it was a notification for a deposit.
'Oh my god,' he thought, sucking in a deep breath as his head reeled. 'This is even more than last time.'
A little note on the transaction read, 'video call expenses'.
'No way, he thinks I'd charge him for that?' Logan thought with a smile, wagging his head. 'I probably should, but it's kind of fun talking to him through the phone... doesn't take much effort as a physical date.'
His mind wandered once more about what to do with the money. He thought about it for awhile, before a lightbulb went on in his head. Getting onto his bike, he sped down to the local shelter right as they were about to close for the night. A lone volunteer was sweeping the floor.
Logan had always wanted to come down here. But he never had the time or money to afford. "Hey," he greeted, and the worker glanced at him. "I want to make a donation. You have any animals in need of treatment or surgery or anything?"
The worker seemed pleased as she went over to the desk and typed something on the computer. "Actually, we do," she said, showing him a picture of a German Shepherd. "We found Riley chained up and severely dehydrated. He's currently getting treatment, but he's in the ICU and his nights in the ward are really squeezing out our funds for the other dogs."
Logan's heart wrenched at the picture. Riley looked like such a loyal companion. "I'll sponsor him."
The lady smiled. "That's great--- we can channel our donations to treat others, too. Thank you, young man. If you'll just sign here..."
Logan walked out of the shelter, feeling something strange overwhelm him. When was the last time he ever had the money to do something like this? He'd always thought of volunteering or donating to shelters, but his time and money were all to keep his family afloat. And now... it felt good, to finally have the power to make a difference. He almost felt a little teary.
'As long as the dates with Keegan go well, I'll make enough to support myself, help Dad, and do the things I've always wanted to do.'
That night, Logan went home feeling good.
The next day was a weekend that Logan spent doing his assignments, painstakingly hunched over his desk typing out words with an open textbook in hand. He was supposed to go and see Kick at his Go-Kart training course this evening, so he had no choice but to complete all his coursework now.
When it was lunchtime, he went downstairs to see a dining room set out with food cooked by his father. His older brother was already there, too.
"Damn, three dishes?" Hesh observed with a low whistle, glancing at Elias. "You usually cook two. Why we eating nicer than usual today?"
Logan settled in at the table, also wondering the same thing. When their finances got rough, they only got by with only one or two dishes, so three different dishes was out of the norm. "They look great, though," he added with a grin.
Elias looked proud. "I think things at work are finally starting to fall into place, so I bought a little extra to celebrate."
Both of his sons perked up. "That's great, Dad," Hesh congratulated, grinning.
"Yeah, it is, and I hope it stays that way," Elias said with a wry smile. "Hesh, I know you've still got your scholarship to fall back onto if I can't make ends meet, but don't go blowing off all that money just because I'm optimistic things at work will change."
Hesh raised his hands in a surrendering gesture. "Hey, I'll manage myself wisely so I won't burden you, Dad."
"You're no burden-- if you need money, just say so," Elias clarified, arching a suspicious brow. "But I'm telling you to watch the money you spend on all those girls you bring out on dates."
Hesh almost spit out his water, and Logan couldn't help but laugh. Elias was smiling despite himself.
"I'm just telling you boys that things look good, and I hope it'll stay that way," he explained. "But you never know, so let's not let our guard down."
Both of his sons nodded in understanding. They were both already adults, anyway, and were eager to lighten the load of their father in any way they could. They spent some more time catching up with each other before Elias started cleaning up.
"If you two need me, I'll be in the study," he said. "I've got a project that needs attention."
"Don't work too hard," Logan reminded, and his father disappeared down the hallway.
Now alone with his brother, Hesh glared. "I see you had fun when Dad said that thing about the dates, huh?"
Now reminded of that issue, Logan snickered. "At least someone pointed it out. I don't get how you even have time for that, and still got a scholarship."
"That's because I'm the best," Hesh said, rolling his eyes, before leaning forward. "But don't get too cocky. Not when you've got a secret of your own."
Logan blinked. He felt scared for a second, but there was no way Hesh knew. "What are you talking about?"
"Don't pretend not to know," Hesh accused, pointing an accusing finger at him. "I saw all that stuff you bought at the mall yesterday. You were sneaking into your room, trying to hide that gigantic bag of goodies. You think I wouldn't notice, huh?"
Ah, shit. Logan paled, because Hesh was right to be suspicious. Between them, Logan was more frugal and picky about his expenses, given that he had yet to secure a scholarship like his older brother. To suddenly buy so much stuff was definitely out of character.
Before he could respond, Hesh continued his barrage. "Not only that--- no way would you be hanging out at a mall with Kick. Malls are as boring as it could get for an adrenaline-loving guy like him. Besides, he usually hangs out at our house for a bit before going back, but when you came home last night, I didn't see him."
Logan wasn't sure what to refute, because Hesh was completely right. Saying that Kick didn't feel well was a lame excuse, given he actually had training this evening. Logan wasn't sure what to say, but he knew that appearing speechless was exactly what his brother wanted.
"That's a whole lot of speculation," he said, arching an unimpressed brow. "How would you know whatever I was carrying last night wasn't just some my backpack? And how could you be so confident I didn't go out with Kick?"
Hesh faltered for a moment, then frowned. "No way, you're bullshitting."
Logan shrugged. "I can't do anything about it if you won't believe a thing I say."
He felt bad about gaslighting his brother like this, but at the same time, it was really funny to see the other man so flabbergasted. They had a staring competition for a few moments.
"I don't believe you," Hesh declared, standing up with a glower. "You're hiding something, I just know it. And if you annoy me again, I swear I'll find out what it is just so I can hold it over your head."
Logan laughed, though inside his heart, there was a small worry over Hesh's threat. "Okay, it'll be fun to see you chasing ghosts."
Pouting and unsatisfied, Hesh trudged out of the kitchen and into the yard to do his weekly errands (which he only did if Elias was home, otherwise he'd make Logan do it).
Now alone, Logan reflected on the conversation, feeling his heart beat a little faster than usual at almost having been caught out. 'Damn it, I gotta be careful. The last thing I need is Hesh watching my every move.'
A few hours later, he was at the Go-Kart racing track. Kick had just finished several rounds, and was hanging out with him in the bleachers. Excitement about the next tournament was palpable in the air, and after listening to Kick's talk about the training, they moved on to other matters.
"What the hell?" Kick's eyes were wide. "If Hesh saw you yesterday, you would be dead."
"You think I don't know that?"
"If he was the type that would use a secret to blackmail you into doing chores, then whatever," Kick hummed thoughtfully. "But a sugar baby? Nah, I just know Hesh would be beating your date up. He might act all tough, but he really loves you. He'd see your side job as some older guy taking advantage of your situation."
"I get what you mean," Logan grimaced.
They sat in silence for awhile, sipping on their sodas as some Go-Karts whizzed by on the track. Finally, Kick broke the silence.
"I know this may be weird to ask," he said, glancing at Logan from the corner of his eyes with a sheepish smile. "But do you... sleep with your date?"
Logan blushed deeply. "No!"
Kick actually looked surprised. Logan whacked him.
"You thought I slept with the guy?! I just told you Hesh saw the stuff Keegan got for me when I got back home!"
Kick looked guilty, but the grin on his face showed little regret. "Wait, that came out wrong! I meant, do you plan to sleep with him in the future? Is it in your arrangement, or what?"
Logan fell quiet, the embarrassed frown still on his face. "We haven't discussed it yet. He did mention it briefly during the first date, but he never made it a big deal."
"Okay, but that means it could be a possibility," Kick pointed out. "I'm just asking this because, if sex is included in this deal, then Hesh is definitely not gonna be okay with it if you get caught."
"Yeah, yeah, I hear you," Logan huffed.
"And how long are you gonna be doing this?"
Now that caught Logan off guard. "What?"
"How long are you gonna be a sugar baby?" Kick asked, looking at him curiously. "Come on, you can't be one forever. Have you guys discussed how long this would last?"
It was ridiculous, but that question truly floored Logan. Why, though? Why didn't he consider it would end?
"Don't tell me you didn't think about that?" Kick frowned.
But he was right. Logan didn't think about it. He was so nervous at first because of his newbie sugar baby status, and after that... was he just that consumed in the excitement of dating an attractive man, to the point he forgot their relationship would come to an end when his needs were met?
He pursed his lips. "I don't know, either. Dad's company seems to be stabilising, so until I know for sure that Dad's finances are okay, I'll keep doing the job."
Kick nodded. "Sounds good. So... when are you gonna meet him next?"
"I don't know," Logan shrugged, sighing. "Any suggestions?"
"My racing tournament," Kick grinned, "though, that's in two weeks."
Logan laughed. "Sounds good. Don't be surprised if I take you up on that offer."
Someone in the crowd called out to Kick, and he got up, dusting himself off. "I'm actually looking forward to meet that guy, since it sounds like he treats you so well," he said, with a cheeky grin. "Hell, if you bring him here, the whole team's gonna think you've got a boyfriend."
Logan flushed again, this time shooing the other man away, who laughed as he got back to his training.
As Logan observed the Go-Karts go by, he put a hand on his chest to calm his heartbeat. It was racing in his chest, almost as fast as the karts on the track. For a moment, he felt dumb.
Boyfriend. He might be Keegan's date, but he was never Keegan's boyfriend. Though, some part of him felt a bit hurt when he recalled that fact. And all this over a transactional relationship.
Keegan liked his sincerity and honesty, but that didn't mean he would appreciate a committed relationship to a financially-dependent student from a completely different life. In the dates they went on, Logan could almost pretend they were an item.
The flirting and touches, the luxury they indulged in, the pride of showing him off...
Logan groaned.
Why did he catch feeling so easily?

Chapter 4: The Nightclub
Chapter Text
A few days later, it was a late night when Logan had just gotten out of the shower. ‘Oh shit, it’s almost time for the video call.’
He had only just managed to finish the thought when his phone rang. Sure enough, Keegan’s name was on the screen. Knowing it was too late to dry himself, Logan picked up.
“Hey,” he greeted with a sheepish smile, just briefly catching a glimpse of Keegan’s face before his eyes wandered around his own room to look for clothes. “Hold on, I just got out of the shower.”
Logan placed his phone upright on the desk. It didn’t register in his mind that his date hadn’t said anything– not until he pulled a shirt over his head and finally looked at the screen.
Keegan’s eyes were slightly wide, and he was sitting up straight in his chair. It looked like he had called from a computer.
Then Logan glanced at the mini-screen showcasing his front camera view, and he realised Keegan had a full view of his messy room, plus the fact his lower body was still wrapped in a towel. Blushing deeply, Logan grabbed the phone to bring the camera closer to his face.
“Oh my god, I am so sorry about that,” he sputtered with an embarrassed laugh. “I was in a rush to answer you because I didn’t want to miss your call, and I wasn’t thinking when I put the phone down.”
Keegan seemed stunned for a few more moments, then he cleared his throat. Through the screen, he almost looked flustered. “That’s alright. It definitely woke me up, at least.”
Seeing his date so bashful only deepened Logan’s embarrassment. He tilted his phone to hide his face from view, taking a deep breath, then he readjusted the camera and gave him a curious look. “Oh, were you working?”
“Yeah, I met some friends this evening, so I only had a chance to do some work tonight,” Keegan explained, leaning forward to tap on his keyboard somewhere beyond the camera’s view. Then, he gave an easy smile. “It’s nice to take a break by calling you.”
Because of the placement of the webcam, Logan had a full view of Keegan’s upper body. With his suit blazer draped over his chair, his shirt unbuttoned a bit below his collarbone, and sleeves rolled up to just below the elbows, he looked gorgeous.
‘I probably look like shit, with my hair dripping wet…’
“You look good,” Logan grinned. “Are you sure you’re not going somewhere?”
A small smile played across Keegan’s face. “Almost midnight right now. Don’t really have the energy to talk to anybody except you… unless you dislike it.”
That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Logan actually really liked the video calls, especially because he could stare at Keegan all he wanted without having to risk eye contact. Sure, Keegan was looking at him, but due to the placement of the actual camera and the screen, it never elicited the same giddiness as locking gazes did.
Though, Logan did like that , too.
Butterflies filled his stomach, but he put up a casual front. “I actually look forward to our calls.”
“So do I.”
“Well, I do like being associated with a good time.”
“For relaxation, sure,” Keegan said, leaning forward as his smile turned teasing. “Though, from the excitement you gave me earlier, I’m starting to understand what kind of ‘good time’ you really mean.”
His face was sly, and those previously tired eyes were now sparkling with mischief. Logan’s jaw almost fell slack.
“T-That was an accident,” he stammered, and oh god, he just knew his face was as pink as it could be. “I didn’t mean to surprise you like that.”
As though he had been holding it in, Keegan snickered into his hand. “It was a nice one.”
Logan opened his mouth to say something, but words eluded him. Seeing him speechless, there was a certain satisfaction on Keegan’s face, as though an embarrassed reaction was exactly what he wanted.
“So,” he continued, arching a brow that was still teasing. “Would you be open to a ‘good time’ if we discussed it beforehand?”
Logan’s brain was overwhelmed with the embarrassment of what happened earlier, and the nagging feeling that Keegan was half-serious about his question. Not to mention the issue Kick brought up a few days ago.
Flustered, he couldn’t do anything except stare at Keegan’s smirking face. “I… uh…”
It was that moment his date chuckled again. “Aren’t you gonna put on some pants?”
It was just one embarrassment after the other! Half grateful Keegan tactfully changed the subject, and half mortified that he even remembered Logan wasn’t wearing any pants, Logan groaned.
“Oh god, just give me a moment.”
Unable to bear Keegan’s striking gaze, Logan quickly placed his phone on the table and went fishing for some shorts, all the while praying for his heartbeat to calm. He wasn’t sure if his elevated pulse was due to embarrassment or excitement.
Keegan seemed more flirtatious than usual today. Perhaps he was finally starting to warm up from his usually professional exterior— or maybe he was just tired from a long day and was less guarded than usual.
‘Or maybe he’s starting to like me.’
The thought was shut down as soon as it occurred. Logan shook his head, silently groaning again as he hastily pulled some shorts over his waist.
‘Damn it, I gotta stop thinking like that…’
He must’ve taken a while, because then Keegan’s voice sounded from the phone speaker. “Hey… I was just teasing you.”
There was something about his tone that was a little apologetic. Perhaps he felt as though the teasing went too far? Logan was amused to think that his date might be worried about his feelings.
Comforted by this, he picked up the phone, coming back into view with a grin. “I know. I kinda like knowing you can get a bit naughty.”
Keegan stared, off-guard for just a moment, before matching his grin. “You have no idea…”
The unexpected drop in the octave of his voice, paired with the change of intent in his eyes, struck a chord within Logan’s belly. Keegan’s voice had always been sexy, but being whispered like that— so suddenly, with so much intent and meaning— ignited heat down south.
Logan blushed deeply. This wasn’t like previous times where there were butterflies in his stomach like a schoolgirl. This time, in the intimacy and privacy of his bedroom, he felt truly aroused.
‘Oh my god. ’
With his thoughts racing on what to say, the door suddenly burst open.
Logan jumped, slamming his phone face down onto the bed just in time for Hesh to stride in.
“What the hell?” Logan scowled, getting to his feet. “Haven’t you heard of knocking?”
“Who are you talking to?” Hesh interrogated, eyeing the towel on the floor with equal parts distaste and suspicion. “You’re usually dead asleep by now.”
“I’m not talking to anyone. Get out, and learn to knock next time!”
“I swear I heard a voice coming from a phone!”
Hesh’s gaze locked on said device sitting quietly on the bed. Knowing his brother, Logan jumped forward to block his path.
“I was watching something,” he lied, and suddenly he remembered Keegan’s face through the screen— his relaxed state and easy smile, and sexy voice and flirtatious teasing— what an ill time to think of that now, especially as his cheeks warmed. “A video. So, get out right now.”
Hesh stared at him with doubt for several moments, but then he glanced down, and immediately grimaced. “Eugh. Fine. Wear some earphones next time, because I could hear it when I was passing by.”
He trudged out, closing the door behind him. Logan was confused, unsure what so quickly diffused the interrogation.
Then he looked down and realised exactly what Hesh had seen.
Logan cupped one hand over his face, the other over the tent in his shorts, and dropped onto the bed with the heaviest sigh.
‘ I swear this is the most embarrassing night in history,’ he mentally groaned, glancing at his phone lying face-down next to his head. ‘I bet he heard all of that. What am I gonna say to him?’
He eventually did reach for the phone, only to see Keegan looking slightly concerned.
“Everything alright?”
“Yeah, it is,” Logan assured, and from his front camera, he could see that the blush still hadn’t completely faded. “I’m sorry about the interruption.”
“I don’t mind. Just… who was that?”
“My brother.”
The tension in Keegan’s brow slightly relaxed. “Oh.”
His reaction almost seemed like relief. Just to tease him, Logan arched a playful brow. “What? Were you afraid it’d be a ‘roommate’?”
Catching on to the obviously cheeky tone, Keegan chuckled just a little. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn't. For a moment, I didn’t like the thought that you weren’t all mine.”
“...”
At this point, Logan’s blush was gonna last until the morning. Keegan smirked slyly as if he knew this.
“So,” he said, “maybe we should end the call soon. I understand from the conversation earlier that you’ve got a ‘video’ to watch?”
Ah, Logan was now convinced he’d never live this embarrassment down.
By the time Friday rolls around once more, Logan was a nervous wreck. He stood outside the convenience store, nervously chewing on a chocolate bar while waiting for his date. His watch displayed midnight.
‘Ah fuck, it’s not as if I’ve never been out this late before,’ he thought frantically, running his fingers through his hair. ‘It’s just because… shit, I knew I should’ve asked Kick…’
For the first time in his life, he was going to a nightclub. It was the only place that was still open late into the night— the only place that could accommodate a date with Keegan who had been working late into the week.
‘I could’ve suggested karaoke, but he agreed to clubbing so quickly…’
Never mind the fact that Logan had never been to one, he didn’t even know which places were good. And it was supposed to be him who’s the tour guide.
And for whatever reason, he was too ashamed to ask Kick for suggestions. Perhaps it was the burning shame that Kick would judge him for that (even though he never would— especially since he was a frequent patron of late-night dancefloors himself), or the deer-in-headlights feeling that Logan would ever consider a place like that, being the model good boy he is.
Before he could freak out about his situation any further, a fully-tinted black car pulled up to where he was standing. To his surprise, the window rolled down to reveal Keegan looking absolutely dapper in a dark outfit.
“Hey,” he smirked, eyes brimming with approval as he appraised the younger man. “You look lost. Need a ride?”
Logan was glad he cleaned up nicely. All that research online on what to wear to clubs definitely paid off.
“Only from handsome men,” he replied with a grin of his own.
“So quick to accept?” Keegan arched his brow, his smirk growing more smug. “I never mentioned the kind of ride I’m offering.”
Logan gaped at him like a fish, totally caught off-guard. But Keegan left him no time to process it further as he gestured to the passenger seat.
“Come on in. You look too good to not be taken out on a date tonight.”
Logan could feel the blush creeping up his neck as he got inside the car and strapped his seatbelt on. At this point, it felt like Keegan was wooing him, when it should technically be the other way around according to the traditional terms of their transactional relationship.
Thankfully for his heart, his date laid off on the flirting and eased into some light banter as they made their way to a hotspot for bars and dance clubs. Finding a parking spot took some time, but they were soon walking through the bustling streets of the city’s nightlife crowd, with music and cheers sounding from every corner as they pushed through.
“You’ve got a favourite place?” Keegan asked, looking around with amusement.
In the bright lights of the nightlife avenue, Logan could truly appreciate the dark circles under the other man’s eyes, which weren’t as obvious during their last date. He made a mental note not to keep Keegan out for too long.
“Actually, I’ve never been to a club before,” Logan confessed with an embarrassed laugh, carefully avoiding eye contact with his date as he scrutinised some directions on his phone. “But I overheard my brother mentioning this one place to his friends, so I was thinking of taking you there.”
“Really? You’ve never been?”
Logan looked up to catch Keegan smiling— or to be more specific, his eyes were smiling, while a smirk was on his lips. His blue eyes glimmered with amusement and curiosity, whereas his smirk gave away that he was ready to tease him.
Bashful, Logan looked away. “Yeah, I’m a clubbing virgin, but I’m still determined to show you a good time. I deserve some credit for that, right?”
Keegan chuckled; a deep, pleasant sound. “Yeah, you do.”
They eventually arrived at the place and it was a definite hotspot for the night. Packed, and the music theme for the night was mainstream party songs that they’d both enjoy. Additionally, judging from the cheers from the crowd, it seemed the mix of people within were in the right mood for a night of dancing.
Logan was about to march straight in since there was no queue, only to be stopped by the bouncer.
“Bottle or entrance fee?” the employee gruffed.
Unable to understand, Logan could only stare. “W-What?”
Keegan wrapped an arm around his shoulders, pulling him in close. “He’s with me. Entrance fee.”
Logan was speechless as they made it inside, feeling a blow to his pride because it was Keegan who had to settle that instead of him. However, before he could mention anything about that, he glanced up at Keegan’s face to find the other man looking at him with affectionate eyes.
“You don’t plan to drink alcohol, right?” he asked, his grip around his shoulders not loosening even as they made it inside. “Stay close to me. Let’s get to the bar for a drink.”
They pushed through the crowd. It was loud, lively, and almost impossible to hear each other over the loud music.
Logan felt like a fish out of water. It was kind of warm— he felt as though it wouldn’t be long before he started sweating. The smell of alcohol, the reek of smoke, the pulsing lights…
Was this really the best choice for his date who was tired from work?
But Keegan didn’t let go of his grip around Logan’s shoulders. It almost felt like he had his own bodyguard– a six-foot wall of muscle just pushing through and protecting him from bodies jostling throughout the club.
They reached the bar. They tried talking to each other, but he couldn’t hear his date over the loud music.
“What?!” he shouted, embarrassed at making the other man repeat himself so many times.
Keegan had a small, amused smile on his face. Then he brought his lips close to the other’s ear. “I asked if you wanted a soda.”
Logan flushed. That sensitive brush of lips against his ear sent a jolt straight through him, goosebumps washing down his spine in the best way. Coupled with how tightly Keegan was holding him against his side, Logan was very quickly forgetting the claustrophobic environment of the nightclub.
He could only nod his head.
Keegan bought whiskey for himself and a soda for Logan. They sipped, talked over the noise, and honestly, Logan was finding it quite enjoyable to use the crowded venue as an excuse to be glued to the other man’s side.
He could feel the hard ridges of Keegan’s body all along his torso and hip, that large hand gripping around his shoulders almost possessively, the way the lights casted shadows over his angular face and dark eyes…
Now Logan knew for sure that it really was getting warm.
Secluded away from the dancefloor, Keegan’s intense gaze was getting a bit too much to handle. Logan grabbed his arm and gestured to the crowd.
“Let’s dance,” he grinned, and though he had no idea how, some fight or flight instinct was screaming at him to go to a ‘safer’ area than this intimate bar where couples were making out left and right.
Keegan huffed a short laugh. “Yeah,” he said, allowing the other man to lead him away.
As they pushed their way in to find a suitable space for them on the dancefloor, Logan couldn’t help but feel his date’s gaze on his neck. And it didn’t help when he finally turned around to face him.
Keegan’s eyes were darkened with desire.
‘God, he’s looking at me like I’m the only one here.’
But, despite Logan’s racing thoughts, all his worries (or anticipation?) faded away when they finally started dancing.
Deep bass, thundering music that was familiar to his ears, and the feel of everyone else letting loose around him must have contributed to the ease in which he let go of his consciousness of Keegan’s heated gaze, and eventually found himself grinning and laughing as their bodies moved together seamlessly and with joy. Though this was his first time in a club, he actually felt quite comfortable.
Of course, those strong hands on his hips didn’t hurt, either.
Perhaps it was the giddiness of it all, but Logan realised he had never been so touchy with Keegan before. Neither of them had ever gone beyond holding hands. But tonight, brushing against each other, squeezing his hips, lacing their fingers— it came as naturally as breathing.
“You’re having a lot of fun,” Keegan chuckled, fingers flexing against Logan’s hips, his eyes almost fond. “Glad I popped your clubbing cherry, huh?”
That innuendo wasn’t lost on Logan. But with the adrenaline in his veins, he didn’t mind returning the flirt. “Yeah. Glad you're my first.”
Keegan smirked, and Logan smiled with feigned innocence. He didn’t want to think about it too much; everything was a blast, and this club was the perfect environment for some suggestive banter. It made his stomach coil with heat. Now he knows why Kick loved places like this.
The song changed to a more sultry beat, and for some ungodly reason, Logan felt the urge to turn around.
And so he did.
Feeling his ass brush against the front of Keegan’s pants, and the way his hands grip tighter into his hips, Logan chuckled before looking over his shoulder. “Something wrong?” he asked innocently.
But Keegan wasn’t smirking, nor were his eyes soft. Instead, his gaze was downright sinful.
“You’re making this really, really... hard... for me,” he murmured, voice rough, and Logan felt that double meaning go straight to his crotch.
He quickly turned away, flushing deep, hoping the red lights of the club hid the fact that he was now embarrassed. Damn it, why did he flirt this way if he wasn’t ready to take what he was going to dish out? He could feel Keegan's sexy gaze on the back of his neck.
It’s not that he hated the idea, though. But sex was something they haven’t discussed.
Logan was racing for something to say when he looked up and made eye contact with Kick.
“Kick?!” he blurted, face tinting darker as his best friend’s jaw dropped. “What the– I—”
Kick, on the other hand, looked absolutely flabbergasted. Logan could only imagine what image was on display now— with Keegan’s arms around his waist, his lips so close to his neck that Logan could feel his breath, the fact they were standing so suggestively close to each other…
“Your friend?” Keegan asked, and his voice was so raspy and close that Logan felt his skin jump.
A rush of embarrassment flooded him. He didn’t want Kick to see him get all hot and heavy with someone. Almost on instinct, he all but jumped out of Keegan’s embrace.
“I have to talk to him, I’ll be back,” Logan said hurriedly, grabbing a speechless Kick aside and away from the crowd.
Kick didn’t speak until they were safely tucked away. “Logan,” he said urgently, looking bewildered on top of shocked and embarrassed. “Why’d you ditch your date like that?”
“I- I don’t know,” Logan spluttered. “I was embarrassed. Felt like you caught me doing something I wasn’t supposed to be doing.”
Kick grimaced. “Trust me, I didn’t want to imagine what you looked like grinding on someone else, either. You looked like you were ready to have sex with your clothes on.”
Kick’s observation was so accurate that Logan felt mortified. How obvious and promiscuous had he and Keegan been on the dancefloor? That post-adrenaline clarity was getting to him now.
“Anyway, you can’t stay here,” Kick frowned. “I’m here with a bunch of people from our major. If they see you, you’re done for.”
Logan paled. “Shit. I didn’t see anybody around you, though?”
“They came in before me,” his friend responded gravely. “They could or could not have seen you before I did. Just... get out of here, alright?” Then, he grinned. “I think your date’s itching to get out of here, too.”
Before Logan could say anything, Kick disappeared into the crowd, and he had no choice but to return to Keegan. Surprisingly, the other man was gracious about ending their date early.
As they settled in the car with Logan behind the wheel, Keegan chuckled. “We were in there for a little over an hour, and that’s enough for me. Just the right amount of letting loose. I’m too old to spend the whole night outside, anyway.”
Logan laughed a little. “Hey, you're actually still young. And you still look like you’ve got a lot of energy.”
Keegan peered at him from the corners of his eyes. “Yeah, I do,” he said, a bit quieter, “for one thing.”
Logan tried not to visibly gulp. He loved it, actually— loved this dark, sexier side of Keegan that came out past midnight, so tantalising and playfully suggestive. It made his own body warm with desire just from the sound of his voice and the darkness in his gaze.
And now that they were heading back to Keegan’s place, Logan felt something nagging in his mind.
He wasn’t sure if he was ready for sex.
“...hey.”
Logan’s gaze snapped to meet Keegan’s briefly, whose eyes had lost that smoldering desire and was replaced with gentle affection.
“Sorry if I came on too strong.”
“What?” Logan paused, troubled. “No! No, you didn’t do anything at all that made me uncomfortable. Actually, I–”
He bit his lip. He liked it. But was that a wise thing to say, knowing they were heading for Keegan’s home, without even discussing the terms that surrounded sex?
Never mind the official terms. Logan knew his heart wouldn’t be the same if he spent the night.
Keegan shuffled in his seat, breaking Logan from his thoughts. The other man seemed a little flushed, perhaps from the warm whiskey he drank earlier. Not intoxicated but just muddled enough.
“I thought of something when I saw you walk off with your friend,” he said, voice a little hoarse. “Made me realise, it’s possible I’m not your only date. Not the only guy you’re meeting up with. After all, we never talked about exclusivity, have we?”
Something about Keegan's voice was slightly frustrated and vulnerable. Logan had to keep his eyes on the road despite his racing heart. He couldn’t believe his mysterious date was confessing about this. Was this the whiskey talking? The adrenaline from dancing?
“Thought I wouldn’t mind, but the longer you took to talk to your friend , the more it bothered me,” Keegan admitted, a self-deprecating and almost embarrassed huff of laughter flitting past his lips. “Starting to wish you were exclusive, Logan.”
They pulled up in front of a high-end serviced apartment right as he said those words. Logan’s heart was hammering against his ribcage as he turned to look at Keegan.
He had expected the other man to be staring at the dashboard, but no, those piercing blue eyes were looking at him.
Strangely open.
“Uh, well, honestly,” Logan stammered, his fingers flexing and relaxing against the steering wheel. “You’re the only guy I have an arrangement with. It’s not just about the money— there are a lot of guys out there who are jerks.”
Before he could change his mind, he reached over to squeeze Keegan’s arm a bit reassuringly. “So, don’t look so troubled.”
Keegan’s large hand covered his, his lips lifting into a small smile. “You always know the right things to say.”
The moment was charged and intense. Perfect for Keegan to ask him upstairs.
Instead, his date merely kissed his knuckles. “I had fun.”
Logan blinked, feeling strangely disappointed when Keegan opened the door. The intimate moment ebbed away as they both stepped outside of the vehicle, standing in front of the luxurious apartment.
“The valet will park the car, and I’ll make sure he gets you a cab home,” Keegan said, gazing at Logan’s lips for a brief moment before meeting his eyes. “See you again soon.”
Logan had to fight the disappointment in his chest. “Yeah…”
Keegan was probably tired. After a whole week of working, then dancing and drinking like that, of course, he was too exhausted for anything… more. At least, that was what Logan said to convince himself, to soothe the ache in his heart and his body that he didn’t want to go just yet.
And from the longing in Keegan’s face, Logan had more than half a hunch that he wasn’t the only one feeling that way.
Keegan stayed outside until a cab pulled up for Logan, and they waved each other goodbye. He collapsed in the back seat, face flushed, reflecting on the fact that there was no way he was going to sleep without rubbing one out tonight.
Keegan’s lips on his ear, his body against his back, his hands on his hips… and best of all, that little admission of jealousy on that car ride back.
Fuck. He really had to think about and bring up that sex discussion soon.
For both of their sakes.

Chapter Text
Logan walked through campus, his thoughts wandering, having just exited the college administration office with a few papers in hand.
‘I can't believe I paid for all of my tuition fees plus the outstanding ones… using my own money,’ he thought, somehow feeling a bit emotional. ‘That’s going to be a load off Dad’s shoulders.’
It was strange. Logan, who had spent almost his entire life being very careful about his funding because he didn't have a source of his own, was paying off debts using the money he earned by himself. It was freeing.
But that was not the only thing on his mind. He shuffled the papers until he reached the last one.
A scholarship acceptance letter.
After so many months of toiling to get the best grades, submitting multiple applications, the hassle of getting those official documents approved… he did it.
‘It’s the same scholarship as Hesh’s, with allocated funds for my remaining semesters plus a competitive internship at the end,’ he thought, his grip on the papers tightening slightly.
It was what he wanted. He worked so hard for this.
Then why did he feel so uneasy?
‘I technically don't need to be a sugar baby anymore…’
Before his thoughts could wander, Kick waved him over from their usual outdoor table of the cafe.
“Hey, I just read your text!” Kick grinned, giving his friend a big hug. “Congratulations! Your dad is going to be ecstatic when he finds out. I'm happy for you.”
Logan smiled as they sat down together. “Thanks, I'm actually still in disbelief. I was expecting my application to be rejected this semester as well.”
“It's about time they granted it to you,” Kick grumbled against the rim of his coffee glass. “You needed that scholarship more than anyone else, hell, you even took up a side job.”
Logan grimaced as he drank his own drink (that Kick had bought in advance before he arrived). The last thing he wanted right now was to think about was Keegan.
“Speaking of side jobs,” Kick started with a sheepish grin. “I never asked you how much you actually earn. Must be a lot, if you can pay all the tuition fees so quickly.”
Logan huffed a short laugh. “It certainly is a lot. Not that I know other sugar babies, but for the service I offer, I think I'm being overpaid.”
“What have you been doing with the money?”
“For one, I've been donating to shelters, more specifically I've been sponsoring the treatment for a dog that was in intensive care,” he hummed thoughtfully.
“Wow, that's noble of you,” Kick blinked. “And actually, so like you, too. I respect that.”
Logan chuckled. “I've also been using the money for some home improvement. This past weekend, I had some people fix the garage door and dishwasher.”
Kick frowned. “Didn't your dad or Hesh question who's paying them?”
Logan shrugged. “I called the repairmen over when neither were home. Then I lied and said I fixed it myself.”
“Wow, goody two-shoes Logan telling a lie?” Kick teased, which earned him an affectionate eye roll.
“I'm gonna need your help in that area, because there's only so much I can do before Hesh and Dad realise I'm not that good of a handyman,” Logan sighed, running his hand through his hair. “There's actually so many appliances I could replace by buying a new one, but that would be hard to explain.”
Kick let out a low whistle. “Wow. You're loaded!”
Logan smiled. “Yeah. I got lucky.”
There was a brief silence, then Kick said, “But don't spend all your money. The scholarship accepted you, sure, but you're not getting the money until next semester which is a few months away.”
Logan nodded, sipping on his drink. “Yeah, I hear you. I'm putting the money into savings, too, don't worry. If the house improves too much too fast, Hesh will get more suspicious than he already is, anyway.”
The silence that followed next was slightly longer. Logan noticed his friend fidgeting.
“What is it?” he frowned.
Kick hesitated. “I don't know if it's the right time to tell you this, but…”
“Out with it.”
“Remember when we met last Friday, I said I hit the club with some people from our major?”
Logan didn't like where this was going. “Yeah…?”
“Well, someone saw you with an older guy,” Kick sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “Some people were asking me if you have a boyfriend. I know that wouldn't be a big deal, but I'm actually worried if these rumours reach—”
“Hesh,” Logan finished, and both of them grimaced.
This was bad.
“If Hesh hears rumours that you have a boyfriend, he'll definitely wanna meet the guy, and that wouldn't be a problem… if the guy was actually your boyfriend,” Kick stated. “But if Hesh finds out it's transactional? Hell is gonna break loose.”
That made Logan wince. There was an ache in his heart to be reminded Keegan was technically his employer.
He sighed, shaking his head. “There's no way for me to stop stupid rumours anyway.”
Just then, his phone received a notification.
“Speak of the devil?” Kick guessed.
“No, it's the shelter,” Logan said, skimming over the text with a slowly growing smile. “Wow. The dog I've been sponsoring, Riley, was discharged from the hospital. Shelter's asking if I'd like to foster him.”
They both marvelled over the picture of a beautiful German Shepherd dog.
“Wow, he's gorgeous!” Kick beamed. “I'd offer to foster him myself if I wasn't living in a dormitory.”
Logan couldn't stop grinning. It felt like he achieved something good with his own hard work.
“I really want to foster him, at least until he gets better,” he mused. “Think Dad and Hesh will suspect if I do?”
Kick shook his head. “Nah, Riley's from the shelter. I'm sure they'll just automatically believe all expenses paid for by the shelter and you just volunteered. You're kind hearted, so they won't suspect anything.”
At that same moment, Logan received another notification. This time, it actually was from Keegan.
Asking for another date.
‘I know it's not our usual day for meeting, especially so soon since the last time,’ it typed, ‘but I want to see you again. Hope you can accommodate me.’
Logan chuckled. Such a formal message. Yet it held meaning— he can almost hear Keegan's slightly vulnerable undertone, as though afraid of rejection.
“Ah, so now it's speak of the devil?” Kick teased. “That smile on your face says it all.”
Logan paid him no mind, mulling over his options. He had some ideas, but he wasn't sure if Keegan would like them.
Still, it was worth a suggestion. Besides, he wanted to believe a little in his heart that maybe, just maybe , Keegan wanted to see him just as much as he wanted to see Keegan.
Sometimes waiting for Friday to roll around was absolutely unbearable.
When they arrived at the shelter, the only thing that crossed Logan's mind was disappointment now that the ride was over.
He wasn't expecting to meet Keegan on a motorbike. Nevermind his date looked so sexy with the helmet on, he even got to ride behind him, bodies pressed against each other, his hands on his abs…
Keegan smelled so nice.
“I can't believe you actually agreed to come with me,” Logan smiled sheepishly, in an effort to prevent his thoughts from wandering too much. “I really appreciate your company, following me on an errand like this.”
Keegan was amused, looking absolutely dapper in his casual T shirt and khakis. “I should be thanking you. We're meeting outside of our pre-agreed time, and that's not something I take for granted.”
Logan's smile faltered a little, not liking how business-like that sounded, but he managed a short chuckle nonetheless. “It's fine. I… wanted to see you, too.”
He turned away, too embarrassed to see what face Keegan would make in response to his surprisingly honest comment. They walked into the shelter where they were promptly greeted by the staff.
“Welcome, you must be Logan, Riley's generous sponsor!” the lady grinned, her eyes glancing at both men appreciatively. “You're here with your…?”
“Partner,” Keegan replied, much to Logan's (pleasant) surprise. “We're both looking forward to meeting Riley.”
“He's out in the yard with a few other dogs, having some playtime,” she beamed, leading the way. “I'm sure Riley would love meeting you both, too.”
In the brilliant dazzling sun, Riley didn't look like a dog who was fresh out of the hospital. Despite looking thinner than the others, he barked and played and ran, his coat glistening underneath the rays.
“He's beautiful,” Logan murmured in awe. Riley looked very different from the pictures, in a good way.
The staff called Riley over, to which he promptly approached. “He's very intelligent, as you can see,” she smiled, just as the dog sat down, looking at them curiously. “He's the perfect companion, whether as an only ‘child’ or for starters to expand your family.”
“C-Child?” Logan sputtered, feeling his cheeks burn, as his thoughts raced. “U-Uh, we're not… I mean…”
His heart leaped to his throat when Keegan wrapped his arm around Logan's shoulders.
“We'll spend some time getting to know Riley before taking him home to foster,” he said coolly, an easy smile on his lips as he looked down at Logan. “Whether we'll adopt him to expand our family depends on whether he'll be a foster fail or not. Isn't that right, love?”
Love.
Out of all fake nicknames he could've used— baby, babe, honey, sweetheart, etc.— he chose love?
Logan was flustered. He couldn't answer. And Keegan's obviously public display of affection seemed to have flustered the staff as well, who smiled and excused herself so they could have private time with Riley.
When they were left alone, Logan realized belatedly that maybe that was Keegan's true intention all along.
‘He could’ve chosen other ways to embarrass the staff into leaving us alone other than this minor PDA,’ he thought shyly, inwardly frowning. ‘Then again, I’m really getting worked up for nothing.’
“So, this is what you've been doing with part of the money you've earned,” Keegan said, casually releasing his hold on Logan as he crouched down and let Riley sniff his hand. “I'm impressed, actually. I don't know what I was thinking you'd use the money for, but it wasn't this.”
Keegan gently scratched Riley’s ears, whose tail wagged with excitement. His eyes were soft.
Logan mulled over his date’s words. “What did you think I was using the money for?”
There was a brief silence.
“...I don’t know, I never actually thought about it,” Keegan confessed, looking up to meet his gaze. “I’ve never considered the money as something obligatory, though I knew it was expected of me to you.”
He paused for a moment, looking away. “I’ve always seen it as a gift. For your company.”
It was a rare instance for Logan to be looking down at Keegan. Something about his honest, soft expression while he was knelt down on the ground was doing something to Logan’s heart rate.
“I see,” Logan averted his gaze, praying to god that his cheeks weren’t burning. Given how bright the yard was, even the slightest blush would be obvious as hell on his face. “Well, now that you know, what do you think?”
Keegan chuckled. “I admire you for it. Did you know I love dogs?”
“Honestly, I never would’ve guessed if it weren’t for today,” Logan smiled a little, especially as his date picked up a squeaky ball and waved it in front of Riley’s face.
Riley sprung to his feet and playfully barked, ready to spring to action. Keegan playfully fake threw the ball several times much to Riley’s annoyance, until he finally let out an honest to god laugh before throwing the toy as far as he could.
Riley bounded after it.
Logan was stunned.
“Wow, you’re better with animals than I thought,” he said softly, though what truly mesmerized him was the sound of Keegan’s carefree, almost boyish laugh. He had never heard the other man sound so joyful.
It strangely made his heart skip a beat.
“I’ve actually always wanted to adopt a dog, but I never could stay in one place because of my work,” Keegan admitted, a hint of nostalgia and longing in his eyes as he watched Riley catch the toy. “Maybe this time, I could…”
He trailed off, grinning and praising Riley when the dog returned. Seeing Keegan so enthusiastically and lovingly greet Riley, Logan felt a little ache in his chest— a good one. The sight was sweet. It was nice to see this part of Keegan that seemed to be healing a childhood wish.
Something about this date felt a little different. Was it because it was in the middle of the day, with the sun still out? Seeing Keegan in the bright daylight was so dazzling and warm. The atmosphere between them felt so… safe.
Not that Logan complained about Keegan’s vibe in the night. It just occurred to him that they rarely met or interacted before 5 pm.
“Actually, I never asked,” Keegan said, his voice slightly nervous as though unsure if he should continue. He played safe by rubbing Riley’s belly, not making eye contact, though the uncertain gleam in his eyes gave it away. “Why did you even start being a sugar baby in the first place?”
Logan blinked. He always felt as though he’d feel apprehensive answering that kind of question, like he’d be put in the spot about using Keegan for his money. But here, surrounded by dogs in the warmth of the sunlight, any worry he had suddenly seemed so far away.
“I started because my dad is struggling at work,” he answered honestly, kneeling down next to Keegan to scratch Riley’s ears. “I needed the money so he wouldn’t feel burdened paying for my tuition fees.”
Keegan’s silent for a moment, thoughtful. “You’re a good son,” he murmured finally.
It was simple words, but Logan felt his heart swell at that. “Thank you,” he said. “I try my best.”
Then he looked up to meet Keegan’s gaze, grinning a little. “But really, I got lucky with you.”
Keegan chuckled, surprised yet pleased by the admission. Logan picked up a tug-of-war toy and wrestled with Riley, who, despite being a dog who had just recovered, was strong and energetic and gave him a run for his money.
When Logan was exhausted, it was Keegan’s turn, and that was a show Logan definitely appreciated. Those forearms looked so lean…
Eventually, though, Riley got tired. He settled his head on Keegan’s lap from where he was sitting cross-legged on the ground— much to his surprise— and started snoozing.
“Looks like we’re not getting out of here any time soon,” Logan joked, to which he earned another amused chuckle from his date.
“This is the only time I’m glad to have a third wheel during my time with you,” Keegan responded, looking down at Riley almost affectionately. “This is nice. It feels… real.”
He looked up to meet Logan’s eyes, that same affectionate and soft look on his face. “Thank you for bringing me here. It’s domestic. Reminds me there’s more to life than work.”
Logan watched him for a few moments. He liked how full his heart felt just seeing Keegan bask in the happiness of Riley’s presence. Why didn’t Keegan just adopt a dog, if he loved one so much? It’s obvious the other man had a lot of love to spare for a loyal friend.
And that brought to mind another question Logan had been dying to ask, but never had the right time.
“Keegan…” he started, to which his date hummed inquisitively in response. “Actually, how long are you staying here? In town, I mean. You rarely talk about work, so I never made any assumptions.”
Keegan smiled, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. In fact, it seemed almost sad. “Well, I’m only here as support for the main branch of my company. It’s going well… very well. There’s a possibility my expertise won’t be needed for much longer.”
Of all things, that was not what Logan was expecting to hear. Neither was he expecting his heart to drop to the pit of his stomach at the possibility of Keegan moving away and never seeing him ever again.
Disquieted by the answer, he didn’t respond, and this didn’t go unnoticed by Keegan. The older man patted the spot on the grass next to him. Logan sat down, and Keegan covered his hand with his own.
There was silence for a few moments as Keegan, almost absent-mindedly, used his other hand to gently stroke Riley’s head. The mood seemed somber as they respectively mulled over what had just been said.
Then he turned, smiling at Logan with a smile so gentle and affectionate, it seared into his memory.
“I could ask for a permanent transferal…” Keegan murmured, so softly, like a promise he was hopeful to offer, if only the other man wanted it. “If I had incentive to stay.”
Logan’s own heart was almost beating out of his chest, at the words that were said, at the meaning they implied , but Keegan’s eyes trailed down to his lips, and suddenly Logan couldn’t think anymore.
So he blurted out the first thing that came to mind. “Why don’t you adopt Riley?”
Keegan blinked, surprised. “What?”
There was no going back now. “Exactly what I said. You should adopt Riley. I can foster him while you sort out your things— whether you wanna take Riley back to your original home before you moved here or…” he gulps, looking Keegan in the eyes. “Whether Riley will be your reason to stay in town.”
Keegan was too stunned for speech for several moments before he chuckled. “I can’t argue that Riley’s a pretty good incentive, just… not exactly the incentive I was hoping for.”
The small smile on his lips was perfectly cute; a mix of slight disappointment, amusement and a tinge of hopefulness in Keegan’s eyes. Logan knew very well what his date actually meant.
“But I see your point,” Keegan admitted with a small laugh. “You’d really hang on to him for me?”
“Yeah! Of course, I’d love to foster him knowing he’d go to a loving and permanent home.”
He half-expected Keegan to turn his eyes back to Riley. But no, the other man kept his gaze on him, reaching out to tuck a lock of hair behind Logan’s ear. Once again, he glanced down at his lips.
And Logan just couldn’t fight the urge anymore.
He leaned in, slowly, tentatively, meeting Keegan in the middle.
He always imagined they’d share their first kiss in the darkness of night, somewhere alluring and tantalizing, until the heat in his gut would get so unbearable that it’d ultimately lead to tangled limbs under the sheets…
But here under the sun, in the warmth of a hopeful promise and with Riley snoozing by their feet, Logan actually liked this version of their first kiss much, much better.
Notes:
Compared to last chapter, this one was really sweet and innocent (or at least that's what I was aiming for. Fluff!!!)
Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Do leave some kudos!! 🥹❤️
