Awakeners killed each other all the time. Friends murdered friends. Family slaughtered family.
A Top Fifty gunning for a new Top Ten? Typical, shrug-worthy, in comparison.
Yet his chest ached fierce, watching Pluton’s tail wag in the little puppy form Kayden gave him. Imagining that puppy as a man fluttered a feeling deep in his belly.
Seeing Pluton gently nibble his apprentice’s gift-bone staked the flutters through his gut.
In terms of prestige, power, Kayden expected this— knew the challenge inevitably ahead.
But why did it have to be him?
