Despite the layers of metal and earth separating them from the war-scorched surface, the air was thin and cold. The walls of the underground refuge were damp with condensation and wires hung loosely from the ceilings like vines. It was a temporary stronghold, one of many. Nothing lasted long in Apocalypse’s world. Safety was an illusion and home was a dream.

He breathed quietly, kissing her through her hair before he spoke softly, "Well… this be the world we livin' in, chère… and as is, there seems t' be li'l room fo' what we wish fo'. Only survival."
Unable to disagree with him, she nodded, and that traitorous tear slipped down her cheek. As she looked up at him, her eyes were glassy and dull with grief for what they would lose in each other.
"Mebbe in another life…" he mused charmingly with that devilish smirk of his that won her heart over a dozen times.
