Summary
A proud banner over the table read ‘The Gayest Ivy’. Jay didn't know if that was true.
~~~
Nick didn't look like a girl to Jay, but then Jay supposed that was probably what Nick was going for. His chest was pressed flat and while his jawline and eyes had a soft sort of femininity to it, his other features were sharp. Jay felt a sort of flutter, Nick was beautiful but not in the same way he had ever found a girl beautiful before.
Dan Cody had never felt more alone until eight months ago when one sweet young boy ended up aboard the Tuolomee with him. He's become very fond of the boy over their time together, but when Jay comes to him with a rather strange, uncomfortable request and a few very unexpected revelations, their relationship shifts from Captain and First Mate to a Man and his Boy. Who knows where this new chapter of their relationship will end up?
Summary
Nick Carraway has wasted his life. After graduating from Yale and spending one pointless summer in New York—a time that only showed him how pathetic the lives of the wealthy really were—he returned home to St. Paul only for his father to tell him to go do something on his own. Opening a branch of the family hardware company in Duluth was not an option after the economic crash, so now he's working as a carpenter and wasting that expensive education and the rest of his life, poor and miserable with only his roommates, Jordan and Chester, to brighten his days.
Jay Gatsby has spent almost half his life with a man over twice his age. Essentially trapped on a yacht with an abusive alcoholic who promised him a lifetime of luxury when he was 17, all that good nature and ambition within him has been worn down to nothing but a snobbish shell of the young man he once was. A mistake he made five years ago put a rift between himself and Dan and now he spends his days trying to distract himself from the fact that he's trapped in the very life he spent his whole childhood chasing.
When he ends up getting fished out of the Duluth harbor with no memory, Nick's the only one who recognizes him. It's up to him what happens next.
Summary
Not Great. Just Gatsby.
This in-depth exploration of Jay Gatsby's past comes from years of OBSESSIVE research and work, all with my usual desire to completely recontextualize and destroy your understanding of this stupid book. Nick had his say, but there's a lot he doesn't know about Jay. A lot he might have been told but isn't willing to put on paper—or worse, things Jay couldn't bear to tell Nick.
This story will go a chapter per year, covering his time with Dan, his time between Dan and the war, his time with Daisy—and just why she's so impossibly important to him—his years rising up with Wolfshiem, and that one final year before he dies. We'll get to the very heart of the manipulation and desperation that pushed his man until his untimely end. -
Summary
NEW HAVEN, 1987
Nick Carraway is 19 years old, and he's already crashing and burning. His dad no longer trusts him after something he did wrong over the summer. To earn his trust back, he has to do well in school, work a shitty diner job, and not get into any more trouble. That becomes an issue when trouble walks in the diner door. Trouble in the form of 21-year-old Jay Gatsby, led along by abusive millionaire Dan Cody, who he swears is going to make him famous. How? Good question with a bad answer.
Nick has to interview someone, anyone, for a massive grade this semester, and he can think of no one more provocative than this mysterious young man split so cleanly between desperation and dedication. Only he's not really prepared for the seedy underbelly of the world Jay Gatsby—if that's even his real name—is about to show him. Nor is he prepared to face all the awful parts of himself that Jay is all too willing to drag into the light.
Who's the user here? Who's being used? Nick's determined to find out more each time he returns to the Tuolomee, no matter how much Jay's life scares him. All Jay has to do to get what he wants is urge him:
"Don't be afraid. Just start the tape." -
Summary
“Mister Jay Gatsby was everything a man should be. Mister Jay Gatsby was strong and confident. Mister Jay Gatsby had more money than he could ever know what to do with. Mister Jay Gatsby didn’t let anyone see his dark side.
Mister Jay Gatsby wasn’t always Mister Jay Gatsby.
Mister Jay Gatsby was born a beautiful little girl.
Mister Jay Gatsby used to be Miss Alice Gatz.
Miss Alice Gatz was not everything a woman should be.”
Maybe Mister James Gatz wasn’t the first iteration of Mister Jay Gatsby. Maybe there was someone before him.
Summary
“You call everyone that. All those people on the phone, the neighbors down the street, you even called Tom that. After all I’ve done for you, I deserve more than everyone else.”
He leaned an inch closer, “what should I call you then, old-”
Nick couldn't take it. Gatsby warned him of consequences of risky actions before in this new place, well this was the consequence for Gatsby to tease him like this. Everything that a man like Gatsby did to a man like Nick was absolute agony and unfair, even if Nick was unsure Gatsby knew what he was doing to him. In a moment where he wasn't thinking, or lost control, or maybe just in a lustful stupidity, Nick raised himself to connect their lips.
He didn’t consider the fact that this could be the end of their friendship of sorts. He didn't consider that he could be thrown in an asylum or killed. There were a lot of things that Nick Carraway didn't think of before kissing the man in front of him. However, once his lips were on his, he couldn’t help but think. What was he doing? He was kissing Jay Gatsby, James Gatz, Nick didn't really want to bother to figure out who, but he was undeniably the man he was helplessly in love with.
Gatsby's backstory and various other scenes from the perspective of T.J. Eckleburg (God)
im not sure how to describe it, there's not a lot of plot
------------
The cooling twilight fell over the valley of ashes, a whisper of a breeze curling the dusty grime into lazy spirals. The sun had just begun to set, kissing the horizon and casting a blissful yellow tint on the ashy ground. It almost made the desolate wasteland seem beautiful in a backwards, dystopian way.
Summary
“Did you know I’m bisexual?” Jay asks, turning in Nick’s arms to face him.
“Well, I certainly do now.” Nick responds, putting a secure hand at the back of Gatsby’s neck.
“But-“ Gatsby stops himself, feeling his throat thickening rapidly. He swallows and says, “Did you know? Like earlier?”
Nick considers it, tilting his head for a moment, saying, “do you remember Klipspringer?”
Gatsby chuckles lightly at the memory. “The pianist at my Fourth of July party.”
“You watched him all night.” Nick remarks. “You got with Daisy that Fall, but that night, you were all about Klipspringer.”
Summary
There’s a dark-haired man wearing ceil blue scrubs sitting on the bench outside of five-two-three. He’s slouched over, tapping at his phone halfheartedly. It’s as good a place to start as any.
“Hello!” Jay greets. “Do you happen to know what room Dan Cody is in?”
The man’s head jerks up, and he stares at Jay for a few seconds, eyes blinking and mouth hanging open slightly. “Ah, no I—I don’t work here, I mean, on this floor, I do work here, but I’m just...visiting, um, my cousin,” the man says all in a rush and points his thumb over his shoulder to the window behind him. “But I can help! If you’d like!”
