Dean shuts himself down in Purgatory, letting Benny fuck him out of some kind of survival, and expects that Sam will be ready to open him back up, coming to his rescue, as they usually do for each other.
When Dean makes his own way back topside only to find that Sam's been playing house with some random woman, seemingly paying their past together no mind at all, he shuts himself down even further.
Looks like Sam will have to once again get his shit together in order to fix things between them.

Sam’s just leaving a building to head to another, she’s got so many classes to attend. With her walks her loyal squire of a best friend Haley Carson, who is decidedly yapping beside her, as opposed to chatting, when Sam starts questioning all her mental faculties.
She was so sure she just glimpsed Dean across the crowded parking lot, wearing that same old leather jacket, spiked short hair, the right height… he appeared to be looking for someone—for her? Wh—?
Then a flock of passing frat boys block her vision, and when they move, Sam finds “Dean” to be just some random dude from finance she met the previous semester, who shared all of Dean’s generic features, but thankfully lacked the Dean of it.
Instead of leather, Hayden’s jacket was corduroy, and he waves at Sam when he notices her staring.Sam knows better than to feed herself numbing lies.

Summary
Sam and Dean, investigate a string of bizarre killings in which victims' lungs mysteriously incinerate from the inside out. He is showing a lighter, playful aspect without leaving out his lethal and mysterious persona.
