After months of going through the abandoned Castle Wayne, Bruce returns to the mountains with Dick, knowing not all surviving Gothamites will take kindly to the child with Talon eyes.
The plans to free the city from the Owls begin to take shape. As Dick flourishes into a young man, Bruce accepts his birthright. The reign of the Waynes may never return, but, in their stead, the Bat shall rise.

Summary
Dick Grayson has reached one of the lowest points in his life. He doesn't know what to do or where to go, and the only thing that he can think of is that he needs to get out of Gotham and as far as he can from the Wayne Manor.
That's when, unconsciously, his feet lead him to Metropolis to seek comfort in the arms of someone who had been there for him for his entire life.Or: Dick gets fired but I decided to add some drama so that it's more traumatic.
This is my take on the argument that Bruce and Dick had (so it's different from the comics) and the aftermath of the fight, where the boy has to learn how to start a new life without his father, but with the help of some people who only wish to see him happy. -

As a result of a political power move with the pretense of crime prevention by President Lex Luthor, Gotham City is sealed off from the rest of the world and left to eat itself alive. With the doors to Arkham opened (or battered down), the Bat’s Rogues Gallery carve up Gotham into various dominions suiting their own needs. Batman, Barbra Gordon (Oracle) and the recently-revived Jason Todd/Red Hood find themselves trapped and burdened with trying to save the people they can save. But outside Gotham lives Nightwing, AKA Dick Grayson, a young hero who must cope with getting up every day to be a hero in the wake of losing his family.

Dick gets fired from being Robin. And he quits, sort of. Regardless, Gotham can’t be his home anymore. Bruce and Dick have never been father and son without being Batman and Robin, not really. Dick doesn’t feel like they know how. Dick spends a summer leaning on his friends and trying to figure out what to do while trying to reconcile the fact that the place he was promised isn’t there anymore. Also, he’s pretty sure he’s in love with his best friend, which is entirely unhelpful.
It’s messy, it’s complicated, it’s them figuring it out.
