“And yet you are one of the Goldenbaum dynasty’s servants.”
“I shall strive to be a humble one.”
“Why is that?”
“It seems strange that I would need to explain why I dislike the idea of being an effective weapon of war.”
“Sub-lieutenant,” Oberstein said, “you stand out by virtue of your being. It might be to your benefit to be above reproach in your actions, which by necessity means being successful.”
Yang scratched his head. “Maybe.”
“But perhaps all of this is dangerous talk,” Oberstein said.

After Dietrich Bronner dies, Nat Rome makes the journey to Heinessen to attend his memorial. Frustrated with himself and his own lack of artistic progress, he agrees to join an archaeological expedition to Earth. While there, he wrestles with humanity's history, Bronner's artistic legacy, and the text of his last play, Every Link Was Freedom's Name, about Arle Heinessen's escape and the founding of the Free Planets' Alliance.
This fic is half journal entries from Nat Rome, set ~300 years post canon, and half a play about Arle Heinessen.
