Summary
Alec immediately regrets the instinctive shift of his feathers, knowing how many Downworld throats have been slit open on nephilim wings, knowing how many times Magnus and his council must have seen that happen. But what’s done is done and moving them back would do nothing. Alec comes to a halt at a respectful distance from the High Warlock and waits. His arrival was without notice and is certainly unwelcome. By both nephilim and Downworld custom the next move belongs to Magnus alone.
“Tell me, Alexander Lightwood,” Magnus begins icily, and it’s no surprise that he knows Alec’s name. “What brings the Head of the New York Institute to my door, unarmed, runes inactive, and completely alone?”

Summary
When Alec came back from Alicante, life had seemed to finally be looking up for him. No longer "Acting" Head of the Institute, all of his hard work had finally paid off. He was the youngest official, fully-vested Institute Head in the past 150 years. Something he'd worked damn hard to achieve.
So of course he should've expected for something to happen to change that.
With the introduction of Clary Fray into their lives, and all the chaos she brought with her, Alec came home to an Institute in upheaval. Unsanctioned missions, a search for the Cup, and Valentine's daughter running free. And his very first steps towards trying to fix it all - reaching out to the High Warlock they'd all managed to use for help somehow without paying him - ends with a whole lot more trouble than Clary could've ever brought him.
Alec goes on a journey that starts with pain and ends with a strange bond he never wanted, a husband he never thought he could have, and the chance to finally affect some real changes in the Shadow World.
That is, if they can all survive long enough to see it happen.

If Valentine had wanted to hand Alec a weapon to help him fight, he could've done nothing better than threatening someone Alec cared about. Magnus, the Institute, the kids, Jace. These were Alec's people. His family. And there wasn't anything he wouldn't do to protect his family. That drive and need, and the burning power inside of him, had Alec pushing forward harder and harder, never backing down, never stopping, even as magic sang and burned inside him.
When Jace joined him again, the two of them fell into the type of synchronized movements that made parabatai so effective. They stopped talking, stopped bantering, stopped listening to anything the monster in front of them had to say. It wasn't important. The only thing that was important was taking him down.
Alec didn't know how long they fought. Time lost all meaning. There was only him and Jace and Valentine and the magic inside of him, pushing and roaring to get out. But it was Jace who, as they were pushing Valentine toward the far wall, got in close enough for an attack to finally strike home. With one foot planted firmly, he pivoted his body and swung his leg in a kick that was clearly intended for Valentine's chest. It caught his shoulder instead, throwing the man off balance – just in time for Alec's blade to sink home.
The whole of the world seemed to hold still in that moment as Alec's blade sank deep in Valentine's chest. Valentine looked down at it in shock, one hand already coming up to wrap around it in a weak effort to pull it out, while his other hand lashed out in a blow that Jace easily disarmed. Together, the parabatai pushed him back until he slammed against the wall, the blade digging in even deeper.
When Valentine looked back up at them, Alec was struck by the confusion in his eyes – almost like he wasn't sure what had just happened to him, or how. Like he'd never expected his fight with them to go the way it had. There was no sign of anger or fear, just that shock that came with the realization of what just happened.
Those eyes lifted to him, and Alec glared. “I told you, I wouldn't let you touch him.”

Summary
From the moment there’d been shadowhunters, there had been the guardians. Those willing to go above and beyond their people, their Institutes. Ones willing to bind themselves through magic and rune with a warlock. To pledge their lives to one another, and to the fight against the hordes of hell.
These days the Guardians weren’t nearly so common. It was rare for a warlock to be able to find a shadowhunter who would willingly do the oath with them. Even if some thought it a great honor in the beginning. that had clearly changed. Now, the only time Alec saw any hint of the peace that was said to once exist between the denizens of the shadow world was at events like these. One week, every five years, where all parties gathered together in a ritual as old as their race.
Alec had been interested, once, until he realized what it would mean. Giving up his life, his Institute, his family? A Guardian had to be prepared to let all of that go. Their life became the whim of their bonded and the War. Where their bonded went, they went. And with a lot of the new rules against Downworlders, that meant that there would be so many places a shadowhunter gave up ever seeing again. He couldn’t abandon his people like that.

Thankfully, he looked back down at his phone once more, meaning he didn’t see it as Alec blushed. Though the amusement and pleasure in the bond made it clear he’d probably felt it.
Pushing off from his spot by the door, Alec walked over toward his desk, trying his best to ignore his Chosen. He only had a few things to attend to here, really. He’d done his best to get as much prepared as possible, and he knew he could trust a few other things to Benji, and some even to his parabatai. And the sooner he got this done... well, Alec didn’t really know what exactly came next for them. Their situation was more than a little unique.
Alec was a Guardian now, but he wasn’t a typical one. He didn’t have to leave behind his Institute or his people or any of the work that lay ahead of him. He wasn’t going to be forced to leave and make himself at home with Magnus, though the idea of that still held great appeal. This wasn’t going to be a partnership where Alec had to give up everything to be with him. Instead, they were going to be true partners. The first in who knew how many centuries.
This was going to be an adventure, and it was one Alec was more than ready to throw himself into.

“There’s every chance that I’m not as much of a nephilim as I used to be,” Alec said bluntly. “I already use my runes less. They’re still there, and I don’t think my ability to use them is going to go away unless something happens. But I’m not… I was never like every other magic user out there. I’m not a sorcerer, who learned how to use the magic arts. I’m as much of a warlock as the ones we know about. More, even.” He thought of a very old, very dear friend, and what they’d once explained to him. “Even the warlocks back then were different than I was. They were born from magic, or with magic a part of them. But as it was explained to me, I was magic.”

Summary
Things weren’t supposed to end like this.
That was the thought Alec couldn’t quite banish. It clung to him as he was dragged out of his own Institute with the cuffs around his wrists and his people watching on with looks that ranged from shock to horror, with a few here and there of glee. It repeated over and over in Alec’s mind through the night he spent in the Silent City with nothing but the dark and his memories to cling to.
And it was the thought he had now as he stared at Imogen Herondale and the Silent Brother who held the deruning device so calmly in his hands.
Faced with the end of his life and everything he'd ever been a part of, everything he'd ever known, Alec finds that maybe things aren't as over as he thought. They won't be the same, not ever again, but maybe with the help of someone he'd convinced himself he could never have, he can take what was done to him and make it into something even better. Something that, for the first time in his life, he can be proud of.

The world faded away for one brief, perfect moment. Only to come slamming back in a second later when the group around them shifted and Isabelle’s voice broke in. “Well, that was anticlimactic,” she said dryly, somehow sounding almost… offended.
Jace snorted. “What? You wanted her to fight us on it?”
“She could’ve at least done something. I didn’t even get to hit her!”
Alec smiled against Magnus' lips at the sound of his siblings bickering. The smile grew as they drew back and Magnus chuckled. The hand on Alec’s waist stayed in place, keeping him there, though Alec shifted enough to get his feet steady underneath him. One of his hands settled on the curve of Magnus’ hip, very careful of the claws that might scratch, while his other rested on Magnus’ shoulder, close without being too close to his neck.
Not that Magnus seemed to worry about scales or claws or anything like that. He shifted his face enough to rub his cheek against the back of Alec’s hand. Cat eyes lit up with warm amusement as he slanted a look over at Alec. His lips curled in a playful smirk that made Alec blush faintly.
"If you two lovebirds are done, we should probably get you out of here," Jace said, drawing their attention.

“So,” Magnus drawled out, slow and heavy. He waited for Alec to look up at him and then raised one eyebrow. “Not just any old sidhe, hm? A prince.”
Embarrassment had Alec's cheeks flushing. He ducked his head and looked down at his lap.
Magnus let out a low chuckle. “I suppose I should address you properly, shouldn’t I? After all, I wouldn’t want to cause offense. Fae are very particular about those kinds of things.” His tone turned a bit more teasing, full of good humor that Alec would’ve enjoyed more if it weren’t directed at him. “You have my apologies, Your Highness.”
The flush to Alec's cheeks grew worse. He glared up at Magnus without much heat. “Careful, or I’ll start to do the same.”
“I don’t think it counts when you’re prince to a fallen realm,” Magnus pointed out cheerfully.
“Knowing the sidhe and their need for formalities and titles? Somehow I doubt that, Prince Magnus.”

“No one asked your opinion,” Alec said dryly.
Isabelle tilted her face up toward him, and her grin grew. “Oooh, feeling a bit possessive, hermano?”
“As if that’s anything new,” Jace called out playfully. He moved up so that he could bump his shoulder against Alec’s, chuckling at the glare it got him.
“You better be careful, Alec,” Clary said, her own grin just as wide as everyone else’s. “Boys don’t tend to like that whole hands off, he’s mine attitude.”
Even Simon was laughing at that one, while Alec rolled his eyes in a sort of long-suffering and yet fond sort of way. Though, there was a hint of something else to it, something in the tightness around his eyes as they darted to Magnus and away again, that Magnus very much wanted to banish.
“Oh, I don’t know about that.” Holding Alec’s gaze, Magnus let his smile grow just a bit dirtier, shifting into more of a smirk than anything else, and he hoped the dragon could read the reassurance in his gaze. “There’s nothing wrong with a little possessiveness. I’ve been accused of it myself a time or two.”

Summary
For a long time, Alec had felt like his life was held together by strings tied on him by the Clave, his parents, his siblings. Strings that pulled and tugged him in every which direction, heedless of the bruises and blood left behind. As much as they hurt, some days they’d been the only thing to hold him together.
That is, up until the moment Alec stood on the shores of Lake Lyn and faced the death of the one person who held a piece of his soul, and the lies that followed his mysterious resurrection.
There, on the shores of Lake Lyn, those strings finally pulled too hard, and Alec broke.
With the permission of the Inquisitor, and the help of the warlock who Alec had wanted so desperately to allow himself to fall for (and had been terrified to do more than smile at his flirting) Alec walked away from everything and everyone. He left New York behind and made himself a home in the small town of Prayer – a joke Magnus found particularly funny.
But, two years after that fateful night, Alec’s old life comes knocking, and those strings he thought he’d finally cut are tugging him home. Back to the place he never wanted to have to see again.
At least this time, he’s not facing it alone.

“You were always good at taking the law and twisting it to suit what you wanted. You found ways to use it to help everyone, not just shadowhunters.” Pausing, she smiled softly, a glimpse of the woman under the mask of Head. “I took those lessons to heart when I stepped in at the NYI. I told myself if I was going to run your Institute, I was going to do it the way you would have.”
Heat warmed Alec’s cheeks. He tried to ignore his blush, or the warm feeling he got at the idea someone had looked up to him and his ideals that much. “It’s not my Institute, not anymore. It’s yours now, Lydia, and from what I can tell you’re doing a great job running it.”
“It could be yours again if you want it. All it’d take is two signatures on a paper and control would pass back to you.”
Only a lifetime of training and practice kept Alec’s shock on the inside. Of all the things he’d expected Lydia to say to him, that honestly hadn’t even crossed his mind. He’d never pictured anyone offering him the Institute back. Let alone Lydia. The Institute was hers now.
Alec looked up at her and took in the way she was watching him. Not shy, tipped away to pretend like she was looking somewhere else. No, she was looking right at him in that direct way of hers he’d always appreciated, reading whatever she could read off his face. That honestly made it a little easier for Alec to speak up. “While I appreciate the offer, I don’t want the Institute back,” he said, first and foremost. His next words he chose carefully. “Making the choice to walk away was one of the best decisions of my life, Lydia. I have a home and a life away from the Institute now, and it might not be what a shadowhunter should want, but it’s… it’s exactly what I need. I have a job I love, friends, a home that’s mine.”
Lydia smiled at him. “It sounds… nice.”

“Well, Magnus,” Kitoko says, breaking the silence, clearly amused, “when I heard you were dating a Shadowhunter, I must admit I was sceptical, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised. You chose a good one.”
Alec has been working himself into the ground to try and unpick centuries of Clave prejudice: not always perfect, but he tries, and that is more than most other Shadowhunters Magnus has known.
Magnus’ eyes crinkle as he laughs, wearily, rubbing a hand against his face. “Rarer than achieving the American dream.” He sighs, his brow furrowing. “Really, Kitoko. I can’t thank you enough. Our only plausible option beforehand was the Seelie Queen’s word, and you know that’s no good.”
Kitoko stops, just before the exit, and places their hand gently, yet firmly, onto Magnus’ arm. “I’ll do anything to protect my people. It wasn’t awfully draining.”
Magnus smiles wanly. “So will I.”
But he’s glad that - for once - saving the world hasn’t fallen entirely onto his shoulders.

Summary
"Despite purposefully cultivating this image, this mask of a perfect Shadowhunter, perfect son, it didn't stop him from being irrationally disappointed, upset even, when his siblings couldn't see underneath the facade. He wanted them to look at him, see the way his smiles never reached his eyes, how his shoulders hiked up to his ears when he had to speak in front of people, how his hands clenched into fists when his parents started making disparaging comments about Downworlders even as he nodded stiffly along.
He wanted them to see all the tells he hadn't quite managed to train himself out of yet, see all the jagged edges where his mask didn't quite seamlessly blend into skin.
But they didn't. And so he was alone.
It was this loneliness that was a marked fact of Alec’s life, an enduring and unchangeable truth about his existence."

Summary
Ten years ago Alexander Lightwood woke up to find his whole life turned upside down. The pain he’d been feeling for days had finally stopped, but in its place it left behind a magic he didn’t want and a mark he was sure he’d never be able to hide. Terrified of what his family might do, he ran away from home, sure that whatever waited out on the streets couldn’t be worse than what he’d find if he stayed.
It was by sheer luck that he happened to be found by Luke Garroway. Through him, Alec met Dot, the woman who would become both teacher and guardian, and he met the small, fierce little girl who would eventually become his best friend.
Over the years that passed, Alec learned to control his magic, and he’d made himself a life and a home. Maybe it wasn’t the one he’d expected to have, but it was his.
Only now, things are happening that threaten to tear that life apart. His old life is crashing into his new, and Alec was going to have to make some hard choices on who he could and couldn’t trust.
