Tim recalled that his dad abruptly stood up and left the room, while his mother stared at her hands for a few, seemingly infinite moments and hunched her shoulders to her chin.
Tim had worriedly whipped his head back and forth, because he had foolishly not realized the gravity of his mistake and the rare opportunity his confession signified for their future.
His mother seemed to gather her bearings after a few moments but still glanced at him like he transformed into something utterly unexpected and horrifyingly unfamiliar for a brief second, before her lips weakly stretched into a sad mirage of a smile. Something about the twist of her lips looked like the porcelain pieces of her facade were cracking.
“Don’t worry about who you were then, Timothy. Focus on your name now. It’s the only one that’s going to be worth anything.”
