TK and Carlos take a pilgrimage to New York that includes a night on the legendary Fire Island, where TK is determined to make up for some previous party-day mistakes. They befriend an older couple who open their eyes to what gay life was like decades ago – and why it matters now.

They walk a fair way down the beach, creating a distance between them and the hamlet of bars and beach rentals where guys are milling about. Carlos chooses a secluded spot within a beautiful swathe of grassy sand dunes, freshly whipped by the earlier weather. He takes the towels out of their bag and places them neatly over the sand while TK gazes up at the silver coin moon. He lowers himself down onto a towel, wishing he was better at naming constellations.
TK shuffles so he can sit between Carlos’ legs and lean back. The temperature has dropped again and it’s nice to feel Carlos wrapped around him as the sea breeze blows. He relaxes against Carlos’ heartbeat and feels at peace, but sad. The sky above them is so beautiful. He imagines all the men who danced beneath it decades ago for the last time – thinking they’d be back the next year, and the next – how many of them never made it back at all? -
