Hiccup y Jack eran amigos de la infancia siendo muy cercanos, Jack al igual que Hiccup, era hijo de un jefe de una isla vecina a la de Berk llamada Isalera, y que, por reuniones o simplemente fiestas de las islas ambos hijos de jefes se conocieran y entablaran una estrecha amistad, esto hasta que Hiccup se amisto y entreno con un Night Fury, un temible dragón codiciado y temido por muchos.
Debido a esto Isalera no aceptaron lo ocurrido tachándolos de traidores y rompiendo todo tratado con Berk, dedicándose aún a cazar y matar dragones que los atacaban, Hiccup tenía conocimiento de esto gracias a su padre y junto con sus amigos se dedicaba a rescatar y salvar a estos dragones, hasta que en otro rescate contra la isla vecina cambio todo en la vida de ambos chicos.
