"Exile still seems the best option, Stoick..."
Stoick should have known better. While he didn't know much about his son-especially now-he knew the boy was clever. It should have been no surprise when a guard burst into the Council Meeting and revealed that Hiccup had escaped the cell Stoick put him in...hours after the boy was revealed to have saddled a dragon.
Hiccup is gone, and so is the beast.
They search, but do not find him. Berk falls asleep one night and awakens in the Great Hall, where the torches come to life and cast an image of their isle on the wall, from which floats Hiccup's voice, years younger.
AKA, Hiccup forfeited the final challenge, leaving Astrid with the right to kill the Nightmare. Story picks up in the Race to the Edge era, except Berk never learned the truth of dragons, no one knows how Hiccup really lost his leg, and stories of a hooded 'vigilante' riding a Night Fury have been long whispered...and Berk will see it all unfold.

(this is an AU of a dream I had one night of an alternate version of the red death aftermath, but Valka stayed in Berk Hiccup's whole life, and it focuses on Hiccup's recovery after being injured!)
When Hiccup is gravely injured saving Berk from the Red Death, his survival hangs by a thread and he has to lose his lower left leg. With Valka at his side, Stoick and the village are forced to reckon with what they nearly lost. "The little dragon crooned softly, pupils dilating as he nuzzled against Hiccup's cheek. My son giggled, reaching his arms up over his head as he attempted to pet the Night Fury. I simply sat back and stared in amazement at their interaction. The hatchling took one of Hiccup's arms in his mouth, chewing softly. I gasped, jumping forward to push him away, only to notice that the dragon had no teeth. "What the...toothless?" I murmured in confusion. I could've sworn the other baby dragon had teeth. This one tilted his head, glancing up at me with an expression that read, 'you seriously thought I was gonna bite him?' I relaxed with a chuckle, letting him do as he pleased. If anything, Hiccup was enjoying the hatchling's attention, and kicked his legs happily. "Well, Toothless, meet my son, Hiccup," I introduced with a grin."

And as if that were not enough, there were still many adventures ahead, after all everyone still needed to get used to the presence of dragons in Berk, in addition to having Aric and Runa discover new things all over Berk. Summary
When Hiccup’s final test in the Kill Ring does not go as planned, he runs away, sure that nothing he can ever say will change Berk’s mind. At least he’s not alone though, and with his cousins and several dragons by his side, they leave the archipelago.
