Michael bares his teeth. “I just told you I don’t have anything to pay with.”
“You have hands.” The boy’s gaze slips to them again, fond as if he made them. “You have time.”
Michael waits.
The boy’s tone shifts. It’s almost gentle. “In fourteen years,” he says, “you’ll meet a boy who looks just like me.” He lets the words sit—slow, precise, each laid in its place.
“Kill him.”
