He wanted to die on the overgrown cobblestone; unfortunately, Cullen Rutherford and Melora Lavellan don't give a flying rat. Even the Inquisitor, his enemy won't let him die, entrusting him to Melora's care to recover from his addiction - a (willing) sacrifice to construct a treatment plan for any red Templars who can be saved. Samson is determined to make them regret it.
Somewhere along the way, he begins to forget his goal.

In the end, his da'vher was as likely to be the spark to start the pyre of his destruction, as to become the gods' salvation.
