“I wouldn’t move too much,” the voice says, Peter’s gaze shifting from his side towards the other side of the room– blinking a few times to try and focus in on who it is, only to frown when he sees who steps into the moonlight.

Summary
Peter hates Greasy Pete’s.
He hates the smell of the food, stomach twisting itself into knots and making him queasy— from hunger and from revulsion in equal measure. He hates the customers, who are shitty at best and actively horrible at worst. He hates waking up before the sunrise every day, shivering in his apartment because even if he has a job now that can help pay his rent, it’s barely enough to cover anything else— all the blankets and clothes that he owns still not being enough to keep him warm.
Most of all, Peter thinks he just hates Greasy Pete’s because of what it stands for— a routine and a schedule that Peter doesn’t really want to have because he doesn't want much of anything anymore.

She’s been making it more of a habit of going to Sal’s right after work, avoiding the rush of going home traffic and the congestion of a packed subway– or so she tells herself, and Ben.
She tries not to think of the way Ben looks at her when she mentions it, as if to apologize for something that wasn’t their fault and that even now wouldn’t change. May was firm that she had never wanted kids, telling Ben that to his face on their very first date.
She also knew that she would rather die than see Peter be taken care of by anyone else.

It isn’t until Peter is walking back from the Food Bank, a small bag of groceries tucked under his arms, that everything from the last few weeks begins to hit him. Hilariously, it is not the snow on the ground or the silence of his phone that startles him to the realisation that it is the week before Christmas and he is well and truly, utterly alone. It is the contents of the bag when he rummages through it as he walks, hoping to find a stray bit of fruit that he can use to tide his rumbling stomach over. His hands pull out something hard and round, thinking it’s an apple. It is an individually wrapped fruit cake - festive, a long shelf life. It will last well past the holidays.

Standing under the spray, Peter looks down at the heaped fabric by his feet, ignoring the heal burns and bruises that litter is skin and the scar above his knee that looks a little bit like a flower– May would probably wish that he’d choose less destructive symbols of growth to cover his body with but hey– she wasn’t here. The only company he had was the drenched red and blue.
Eighteen years old and his only friend was a spider– the suit begins to sink towards the plughole, getting suctioned in and creating a growing puddle as it blocks the drain. It isn’t funny, but he snorts.
