Summary
Severus Snape survived the war. He’s not thrilled about it.
Life after Voldemort was supposed to be quiet, preferably nonexistent, and certainly not filled with other people’s problems. Instead, Severus finds himself in a most unfortunate predicament—saddled with an unwanted role as a healer for someone who, much like himself, would rather not be here at all.
His patient is fragile, infuriatingly difficult to keep alive, and far too comfortable with her own mortality. And yet, against all logic, she’s also someone he doesn’t entirely hate. Which is concerning. Very concerning.
Trapped in a house where the furniture has too much personality, the house-elves are far too enthusiastic, and the family is distressingly nosy, Severus must endure the absolute worst fate imaginable—human connection. And if that wasn’t enough, it turns out that fate has cursed him with something even more insufferable: a very long, painful (frozen) slow-burn.
Sarcasm is exchanged like currency, reluctant care turns into something neither of them dare name, and Severus is faced with the most horrifying realization of all—perhaps life isn’t quite done with him yet.

“Regulus Black.”
Regulus feels like he’s going to vomit. He takes a deep breath, clears his hair from his face, and strides towards the center of the room with his chin high. He eyes Dumbledore, the Abnegation leader, as he takes the knife from the man, turning to the bowls and ignoring the old man -- even before the articles Rita Skeeter started releasing about him and the Abnegation faction, he didn’t like the man.
Five bowls. Stones, Water, Earth, Lit Coals, and Glass. His fate lays out in front of him in the form of five large bowls and the elements they hold.
...
He probably assumes that Regulus is going to pick Erudite anyway, and he wouldn’t want to be disappointed.
He’s wrong.
Regulus swiftly turns to his left, letting his blood sizzle over coals.
The word ‘Divergent’ screams at him from the back of his mind. He knows his family would kill him if they found out, maybe he’s safer in Dauntless.
...

Summary
Brown hair in uneven pigtails. Pale skin, almost too pale, a softness to her features that belonged to someone who had not yet learned the weight of the world. She was standing at the edge of Violet’s crib, staring down at her with an intensity that Violet couldn’t quite place. It was strange. People usually smiled when they looked at babies, cooed, and made a show of how precious they were. But this girl didn’t smile. She didn’t coo. She just stared.
Violet blinked, her little lashes fluttering like a trapped bird. She didn’t know why, but something low in her stomach curled, a slow, insistent twist.
The name the girl spoke was a word that felt as foreign as it was familiar.“Hi,” she said after a long pause, her voice hesitant but curious. “I’m Petunia.”
Violet's heart beat louder, faster. Her mind recoiled, but there was no way to make sense of it. She didn’t know this child. She couldn’t place her, couldn’t name her, couldn’t even remember ever seeing her before—but the name Petunia... it didn’t belong here. It didn’t belong to this house, to this life, to this strange body.
Yet it felt so familiar.

Summary
Even two years on, there are hints of it - Harriet can't quite deny it - of Voldemort's presence on the castle grounds - creeping shadows and strange noises and too-thick mist hovering at the corner of one's vision. It scares the younger children - and even the older teenagers, many of whom had been present for the Battle of Hogwarts, if not active participants, seem unsettled more often than not. Harriet doesn't know how to fix it - doesn't know how to remake Hogwarts into what it had once been - into the place she had known it as growing up - into the place she knows it to be, still. All she can do is reiterate - over and over - to pale and nervous students who sometimes can't quite meet her eyes - that Voldemort is dead. He's gone. And he can't hurt them anymore. Not any of them.
Or: One frigid night in January, Headmaster Snape ventures into the Forbidden Forest to banish a rumored Dark creature.
He comes back...changed.
