At the time of Jaehaery's death, his last days and the council formed to determine the line of succession to the throne, all eyes were on King's Landing and the relatives of the royal family. But far away in the citadel and in Volantis there were two descendants of the old king who were still alive, a prince and a princess, even if without dragons, pure Targaryen blood flowed in them. Blood that was forgotten children that was forgotten, descendants of the king that no one seemed to know anymore. So why not meet with the rising moon, the last blood left in the world, and take comfort in this time. After all, it had been decades since they had seen each other...and yet Vaegon and Saera had not changed a bit.

The lives he has taken tally and weigh, despite what his Mother may think of him. And it is for that reason this war needs to be won, because he cannot keep repeating himself. He cannot consider all the harm that is done and decide to cut their losses, because there is no more loss to be cut. They are only what they have, dragons, or so Aemond thought. Helaena will not ride with him. He knows this, now. He knows more than he should. He would have imagined knowing more would be useful, but all it feels is wrong.
“And you’ll be dead,” Helaena tells him, with unforgiving eyes and no remorse. He feels as though he is already dead in that moment. Helaena looks at him like she knows.

During the war, when she’d first begun to cut herself on that blasted throne, there had been a voice in the back of her head. It was a persistent thing that whispered to her at the most inconvenient of times, day and night, a voice that had gone from hissed whispers to a brittle cackle, that told her she would never see any of them again.
Her beloved lady mother and her sweet boys, they were far too good to meet her where she’d fall into the deepest pits of the seven hells after everything she’d done, all of the devastation that had befallen the seven kingdoms in her name.
Of all of the times she’d thought of where she would end up after her death, however, her childhood bedchambers had never been one of the options she’d considered.
