"Xie Lian, come forward," she had beckoned to her son, the prince. A boy no older than Mu Qing himself, but that's where the similarities ended.
Where Mu Qing's hands were calloused from chores and cold winters, Xie Lian's were delicate, untouched by hardship. His hair was neatly combed and adorned with silver clasps, his white robes pressed and embroidered with golden thread. He moved with a quiet grace that made him seem older than he was, chin held high, back straight, like he'd been born knowing how to carry a crown.
Mu Qing had stared at him, wide-eyed and wary. The prince had approached with hesitant steps, glancing between Mu Qing and his mother as if trying to figure out how to act. And then—Mu Qing remembered this most clearly—Xie Lian had smiled. Not the kind of smile nobles gave to peasants out of obligation or politeness, but a real one. Warm and curious, a little shy, like he truly wanted to be friends.
Mu Qing hadn't known what to make of it. That kind of kindness... it didn't feel real.

Hua Cheng, as expected, sneaks into the army regardless. Hua Cheng dies, an arrow lodged in his chest. It is red, and no one can tell where blood begins and where red oak ends. Mu Qing sees it happen.
He is too far from them.
Mu Qing looks away, slashes at yet another enemy attempting to reach Xie Lian. It’s useless; no one can reach Xie Lian anyway. Xie Lian dances, sword easy and brave.

The deputy had a bit of Feng Xin’s temper. He didn’t tremble while Mu Qing held him by the collar. Whatever fear his expression held was one not born of Mu Qing’s rage in having to be here, looking for this man’s god. It was an expression Mu Qing might even have had reflected in his face had he not perfected himself nearly a millennia ago when godhood was still unobtainable and spending his life serving a palace was inevitable.
“We don’t know,” the deputy said.
800 years ago, Mu Qing searched for Xie Lian. Looking for Feng Xin too, was just a consequence of that.
He didn't have that same excuse now.

Mu Qing found it kind of funny to antagonize Feng Xin. He antagonized him over a lot of things- his 'Ju Yang' nickname, his dog-like personality, his obtuseness. They weren't exactly the closest, but Mu Qing had gotten used to him being around, especially as they were the only two beta gods among a court of alphas.
But one day, Feng Xin changed. Was changing, into an alpha. And Mu Qing... well, he was mad that the man kept flaunting his damn status around.
