The Nara clan is known for their relationship with the deer in their forest, their alliance with the Akimichi and Yamanaka clans, shadow manipulation, medicines, knowledge, and laziness. One of the things that they are known for to a lesser extent is their fixations.
All Nara’s fixate on something, usually, it's a hobby or habit that they fixate on, but on some very rare occasions, they fixate on someone instead of something.

As was tradition for new genin graduates of the Nara clan, Shikamaru was to spend the night out with the deer herd in the Nara forest all on his own. He was to spend the night with the herd and tend to all their needs from sundown to sunrise. Something every Nara clan member did.
Why did it have to be him that was pulled to meet with the Lord and Lady of the Deep Forest Deer summons? Why was it him they gave this responsibility to?
What a drag.
