He hated it when Furlan called him deaf. He wasn’t deaf; he could hear the screams of terror from one of the alleyways around him. He always knew when Furlan was snoring if they were in the same room. He knew even his light-foot steps made noise that bounced off the walls of buildings, even if he couldn’t understand what people were saying, even if they yelled in his ear, he still knew they were talking. The world he lived in was made of soft buzzing and harsh crashes, but he could still hear that much.
And even if he couldn’t hear all that well, he made up for it in other ways. He could read lips, and he knew sign language. That was enough to get by. Even if he did have to constantly scan his surroundings when he was by himself. Having to always be looking around when people were talking in a group, so they wouldn’t know his biggest secret. -
