Water had always been scary for Shiro. It was unpredictable, murky, scary, cold, and unforgiving. His father took him fishing once, and only once, when he was a young boy, and on that outing he somehow managed to catch the most grotesque fish imaginable to someone in their seventh summer of life. The king called it an eel; Shiro simply sobbed loudly and demanded to be taken back to his mother. Ever since that day he'd strayed as far away from anything that wasn't bath water - the ponds on the castle ground, the well past the garden, a particularly deep, grimy horse trough. He hated it.
And he hated it even more now that he was stuck in it.
Dark purple eyes shot directly up to land on Shiro’s face but almost instantly they turned a fierce yellow as the mer dropped the bag in his hands and bared his teeth.
Shiro could have sworn he heard something spoken in his head.

Summary
Marine life came in and out of Atlas Ocean Rescue for rehabilitation constantly. There were turtles getting stuck in plastic, dolphins and seals getting too close to boats, otters with oil stuck in their fur. They frequented the surrounding beaches, both cleaning up the land and gently helping animals that accidentally washed ashore. When Hunk and Lance rush through the doors with a real-life merman on the gurney Keith doesn’t know how to handle it. Mermaids apparently exist, and Keith has to operate. As much as it’s a shock to him, how is the merman going to feel waking up in a tank? They had their research cut out for them.

Summary
The stories of the Indian Ocean Kingdom and Panthalassa have haunted the kingdom since the reign of Pearl Princess Sara. A ban against human/mer relationships has been placed on the kingdom, but like the sea, when has a mer ever listened to rules? Keith broke enough of them sneaking out of the kingdom to go follow surfers under their boards, but when a Panthalassa weapon threatens to hurt Keith in more ways than just physical, he leaves to join a banished mer on land. He was expecting to just hide away until he can get answers, not to meet a human who would make him feel as safe as he did in the sea’s arms. But wasn't finding the unexpected as fun as not following rules?

"It's beautiful," Keith whispers, while he watches purple fade into blue fade into red, shaping whirls on the surface of the water. It's not long before the bathwater turns a deep dark blue, but it shines with the light of a thousand stars.
It will take ages for the golden glitter to get off his fin, but Keith doesn't mind. He wants to keep the glitter forever, a proof of his bath in the universe.
"I can't take you with me to the stars," Shiro whispers as he bends forward, his lips grazing Keith's ears. "So I wanted to bring the stars to you."
