Sam nods, his lips splitting into a sincere smile, showcasing a small gap between his front teeth. It’s cute, Bucky thinks offhandedly. “Because when you’re four, you get to come here and play all day while your daddy goes and does boring stuff. Ain’t that right, daddy?” His big doe brown eyes flicker up to Bucky pointedly, and his breath catches in his throat in response.

Realization came a moment later, hitting Bucky's system like a cryo freeze. It wasn’t possible. Was it? Bucky felt his stomach drop when he pieced together all of the similarities between Sam’s story and his own patchy memory. He could almost taste the dessert sand in his mouth as he said, “Ronald?”

“Yeah, yeah, you're super strong, walking through a downpour is probably so easy-” She said sarcastically, but Sam didn't get to hear her finish what she was saying.
Instead, he dropped his phone as he was unceremoniously punched in the stomach, his body suddenly flying back into an alley.
His vision went completely dark for a single millisecond when his head hit the concrete, and the rain was obscuring his vision once he came back to himself. The pounding rain hurt, feeling like little pinpricks on his skin. The bag and all the action figures were scattered across the alleyway, getting completely ruined, but he managed to keep his grip on his umbrella.
“Oh, little bird.” The sickeningly familiar voice cut through the sound of rainfall. “Looks like I've caught you again.”
OR: Sam gets attacked. In the lull between reality and unconsciousness, his mind reminds him of all those he's lost.

Summary
Bucky Barnes has a lot to contend with in the 21st century. One difficult task after another is laid out in front of him: managing his new found freedom, attending therapy and working through his trauma. It's a struggle, but recovery is not a straight line, as his therapist so often likes to remind him.
He has to navigate this friendship / relationship / whatever it is with Sam all the while managing his guilt and shame for his years as the Winter Soldier, and his grief over Steve's death. Then of course there’s these new super soldiers that have appeared out of nowhere that have to be dealt with, along with the frustrating inclusion of new faces, like Walker, and the familiar, like Zemo.
And then there is another task, one that sometimes seems to be the most difficult task of all: learning to be kind to his past self.
Rewrite / fix it of TFATWS – you do not need to read the other parts of this series, this works as a standalone. Pre TFATWS to about three months after the series ends. Not just a rehash of the TV series, I like to bounce off canon and do my own thing. I generally update fortnightly.

Heard the jangling of someone turning the key the wrong way and then the right to unlock the front door and smiled.
Smiled so wide it hurt.

Sam heard Bucky walk in; roll his carryon in before leaving it somewhere in the hall; probably seeing the light in the kitchen and making his way to it.
“Smiling with coffee this late at night? All alone in the kitchen?” asked Bucky, and Sam could feel how close Bucky was, “Are you thinking about something specific or just happy to know I’m back?”

Summary
Sam celebrates Thanksgiving at home with his family and is reminded of a time when Steve shared how Bucky would have felt about him in the 40s.
When he breaks out of his flashback he is met with the man 30 feet away, sitting at the edge of his dock.

It was a small celebration this year. The two siblings, Cass and AJ and one other guest who seems to have beaten him to the dock to take in the soothing sounds of the water lapping against the wood. Sam takes in the sight of him as he makes his way towards the water.

If Bucky had known that he was going to end up in some cheesy 80's crossover between Sam's time in the Falcon program and the movie Top Gun, he would've asked Sam some questions beforehand, like:
Were you into guys or did young Sam really just flirt with everyone like that? Nobody, like, died horribly during the training part of this program, did they? Because these seem very unstable. And was it normal for the "Take My Breath Away" guitar riff to play every time we made eye contact?
He hadn't known, though, that Scarlet Witch from SHEIN would look into their heads and pull this horrible storyline out, so he just had to keep his head above the water long enough to get out of there.

In that moment, in the rundown warehouse, they were directly on him. In their proximity, Sam realized that Barnes looked terrified. His eyes were wide, frantically searching his face. He wasn’t fighting back, even though they both knew he could.
“I don’t want to hurt anyone,” Barnes rasped, voice tight from the pressure on his throat. His hands gripped Sam’s forearm, yet didn’t pry it off of him.
