Hornet wasn’t moving.
Lace was a little dramatic at times, yes. She and her sister made up for Mother’s stone-cold demeanour with their theatrics and banter. The hunter herself even lamented on how annoying she was to her face. More than once.
Despite that, it wasn’t too far off the mark to say that seeing Hornet like that made Lace's heart drop.

They seemed to consider it for a moment before nodding, setting their left blade next to the right as they sat down awkwardly on a piece of rubble, their arms dangling at their sides and their back ram-rod straight as if they'd never sat down before.
or: what if the sentinel had saved Hornet when she'd fallen from the ceiling after the events of act 2's final fight? Hornet feels like she cant let them traverse the citadel alone.

What if the Knight actually made some attempt at communication because they are not hollow no one can change my mind about that. Hollow Knight is a 2D platformer in a 3D world, so what else lies in the ruins of the eternal kingdom? What if the characters of Hallownest weren't mostly fixed to their locations? Speaking of the characters, what was going through their heads? There are so many mysteries left unexplored and Team Cherry said theories and stuff were half the fun, so cue the headcanons.
