Summary
Uukkarnit licks his lips. He keeps himself still, almost buzzing from excitement, yet he can’t stop his eyes from lingering on the boy. Just exquisite, he thinks again, and lets his mouth curl into a smile.
The boy shifts uncomfortably in his chains, and looks away. Oh, Uukkarnit thinks mockingly. The poor, little thing.-----
Uukkarnit has done Arnook's dirty, unsightly work for many years now. One cannot say he doesn't know how to taunt mercy.

Summary
“Sokka!” He startles, looking up. Zuko’s eyes are narrowed on him, and Sokka feels cold all over, and rooted in place though every fibre in his body is yelling at him to run. But why would he run? This is Zuko, he’s not going to hurt -
“I’ve been calling your name for ages. Are you deaf now too, or just stupid?”
-----
Even in his dreams, Sokka can't get away.

“It’s for you,” Uukkarnit says, and as Sokka’s eyes flick back to the Northern man, his gaze is still trained on Sokka.
Gulping, Sokka glances over at the… cage. Oh, spirits, he wants to… they’re going to put him in - that.-----
Sokka's always been a little claustrophobic, but this is somehow so much worse.

“Right,” Uukkarnit says loudly, and Sokka’s head whips up, eyes glued to the wall, desperate to see even though he knows it’s as dark as ever. “Shall we begin?”
Sokka snorts as he practically hears his Dad’s eyeroll.
Uukkarnit, it seems, is ignoring it. “Tell me about the Fire Prince.”-----
Sokka can almost feel the punches they're throwing at Dad, but he didn't think his Dad's words would hurt more.

“I’m sorry,” he whispers, suddenly not wanting to break the peace, though what good it will do when it’s shattered already, he has no clue. “I… I don’t know who he is.”
The man’s lips tremble, but when he speaks his voice is steady. “Do you know who I am?”
…He doesn’t.-----
He's not entirely sure of anything right now, but he thinks he could warm up to man sitting next to him in this cell.

Summary
The plan cuts in and out, the pain digs its claws in deeper with every step he takes, and so do his lover’s fingers on his arms as his balance falters. His injury flares, hot to the touch, then he gasps, wrenching himself out of Bato’s arms as something cold brushes - no, is held - against his burn and spirits what is that -
“Dad!” Hakoda gasps, the light of the cell searing into his eyes, the feeling of Bato’s hands in his gone in a blink. Sokka sits before him, eyes laced with concern.
-----
A seemingly routine beating hits a rather sore spot for Hakoda.

It’s a muzzle.
They’re - they’re going to muzzle… Tui and La, no!
He knows it’s futile. He knows they won’t listen to him. He knows they’ll use it against them later but he has to, he must -
“Don’t you dare,” he hisses. Uukkarnit smirks.
“You have something against this idea, Hakoda?”

This must be one of the worst things they've done yet, Hakoda thinks.

Summary
What… what was that? It sounded like an explosion, but the Northern Tribe doesn’t have the materials needed to make one that large, so what…
An avalanche.
The chill that runs through him has nothing to do with the avalanche, and everything to do with the reason.
Sokka.
-----
He just wanted his son to be safe. He would never have suggested such a plan if he'd known...

Summary
A footstep crunches on the ice behind him, and the dread in his stomach snaps, coursing through his body. He knew it was too good to be true, he knew it.
Sokka glances slowly behind him, and the waterbending guard raises his hands, the beginnings of a grin lining his lips.
Sokka dives for the cave entrance, and the world collapses around him.-----
Sokka's always been the one to poke holes in someone's plan, or their trust in another. He's such an idiot not to think to do it to himself too.
Day Thirteen: Crushed - can be read as a standalone (however it will make more sense if you read day 12 first)

Summary
“Did… did you get any water?” Sokka chews on his lip, his concern honing in on Hakoda.
Hakoda hesitates. He didn’t, but… he doesn’t want to worry Sokka. Not after everything else his stupidity has put his son through.
He smiles. “I had some before you woke up. Don’t worry about me,” he adds.-----
Hakoda, in protecting Sokka, might have to concede that he's gone a little overboard.

Summary
Did… he didn’t deserve to move on, did he? That was what this was about. Making sure he wouldn’t forget, and making sure he was never forgiven.
Sokka takes a deep breath. This is for the best, he’s realised.
He keeps his mouth shut, his eyes down. He doesn’t flinch away as Nukilik cuts his tunic around his neck, and leaves it bare for the branding iron. He lets Dad’s incensed rage sweep over him like a wave.
And yet...-----
Arnook's final revenge on the man who watched as his daughter died.

Summary
He gathered all his remaining strength and lept out of the wreck and onto the sand. He immediately started running for his life. The sand was warm and soft under his bare feet, usually an enjoyable sensation, but it made it hard to keep his footing and therefore his speed.
"Hey! That one's running away!", he heard one of the men scream and he saw in the corner of his eye that the two closest to him started their pursuit. He picked up his pace even more, although he could feel his lungs protesting. They were already tormented through the amounts of seawater he had swallowed while almost drowning and were not happy about the heavy exercise.
"Hey! Stop!", one of his followers screamed but Zuko didn't even think about it.
He could feel them closing in but he was almost at the treeline. If he made it just a little bit further he would be safe.OR
After the Agni Kai, Ozai decides to send Zuko out to the ocean to die and make his way there as miserable as possible. To Zukos luck, the ship hits ground and the wreck gets washed up to Earth Kingdom shores, where a ship of the Southern Watertribe fleet finds the injured teen. Under his false name Lee, they offer to take him to the next port.

Summary
Hakoda can only stare, just out of reach, of his son. He’s turned away from him, back on full display, and if that were their only crime Hakoda would still recoil. They removed not just his parka, but other protective layers and his under tunics, leaving his top half completely exposed to the unforgiving cold. Any man would consider that alone torture.
Uukkarnit was not ‘any man’.-----
Hakoda finds out the hard way just how precarious their position is.

As the door screeches shut, the man pokes his head around the corner. “Amaruq! They’re ready for him.” Footsteps sound along the hall, and Hakoda steels himself to face one of the chiefs on the privy council, or perhaps an Earth Kingdom minister, or a colonial -
They round the corner.-----
The pain of betrayal cuts deeper for some than others.

It’s been hours.
It’s been hours, and the guards haven’t been back, and Sokka is still fast asleep against his chest, and he can’t even close his eyes for fear that when he opens them…
When he opens them, Sokka won’t be safely in his arms anymore.-----
Locked away in their cell, Hakoda lets Sokka sleep off the worst of the drugs while he watches over him, and wonders how they ended up in here.

Summary
Six years after the end of the war, Zuko joins Katara, Sokka, and Aang in the Southern Water Tribe for a voyage around the southern continent to repair piles of stones along the coast which serve as location markers for sailors. Chief Hakoda is not pleased with the rate of Fire Nation decolonization. On the journey, Zuko and the others stumble upon a raiding ship, even though Zuko insists he ended all Fire Nation raids years ago. Aang gives good advice.
A glimpse into the post-series world of AtLA, darker and more complicated than when they were children; a meditation on people versus country; and a critique of the poison of political compromise, except not in the shitty way the comics did it. Incidentally featuring the legacy of Fire Lord Zoryu's purge of Fire Nation clans (from the the Kyoshi novels).
