Stan was 17 when it started. That means he’d be around 21 now. It seemed as if five summers and winters had slowly crept by— or maybe flashed, he couldn’t decide. He barely remembered that day, the way the world had smelled and looked before the virus set in. There was no singular day for quarantine, only gradually encroaching isolation. They sheltered indoors, watching the news of the death counts and reporting of the disease's arrival to the US.
Kyle was 19 when he escaped from the dome. He spent the first month crying so hard he’d vomit, and then refusing to swallow any food back down. He wasn’t a crier, he didn’t even cry at Titanic or The Fault In Our Stars but after the infection started all he seemed to be able to do was sob until his eyes were dry and his cheeks were stained like varnish on a pale painting.
