Summary
Butterflies, in many cultures, signified renewal; rebirth. The caterpillar emerges from its chrysalis somehow equipped with the knowledge of what it is and what its purpose will be. Yusuke never felt like a butterfly. Change had occurred, but not to the point where they could confidently approach the mirror without seeing a chrysalis still hugging their waist. They’d done everything they thought would bring them peace, and there it remained.
Maybe it was a mistake emerging at all. Even if it hurt, it might just hurt… less, when they no longer had to worry about anyone noticing their shell was half-broken.

Life in the big city ends up being even more crazy that he expects, when he ends up thrown into the Metaverse on his very first day of school. Someone has to do something about King Kamoshida and it might as well be him.
His second chance is going to be more difficult than he expected, but he wouldn’t change it for the world.

At the very least, Akira’s not looking when he returns to their living room, seated on the couch with his legs crossed. He’s reading a book. He looks good, in the way he always kind of looks good, but especially so when he’s focused on things. He has steely grey eyes that are particularly noticeable when he leaves off his glasses, like he is now. They’re striking against the black of his hair. Ryuji could stare at them for hours, and has before, absentmindedly, while he was supposed to be doing his coursework.
No coursework to be doing now, though, so Ryuji takes a seat on the yoga mat they have set up by the dining table, figuring he can at least get some physical therapy stretches in for his knee now that it won’t cause him any lung issues. The act grows tiresome after a few minutes, but Ryuji keeps at it, mostly because it’s hard to think too much while he’s stretching, and there is… admittedly… something on his mind.
As usual, though, Akira calls him out before he can get too engrossed. “What’s the matter?”

Summary
It would be nice, having a friend. A shoulder to cry on, an anchor to steady you. Yusuke desperately wanted a friend, but they hardly deserved such luxuries. Anyone who answered the call for a hit without hesitation was incapable of understanding concepts like love and friendship. Yusuke made peace with the fact that, when choosing to enact their revenge, they’d traded any semblance of normalcy for a sharper blade, a gun with more ammo, and a second, darker mask to wear atop their old one.
Yusuke wasn’t fit to play the role of the unlikely ally, but they could fake it anyway. They were bold, brash, bitter—not to mention a terrible actor—but they could try, under the pretense that the end was right around the corner. Sakamoto just had to get used to a girl who wasn’t used to… this. The feelings weren’t genuine, no, but perhaps it could be fun, or at the very least tolerable, while it lasted.
And it wouldn’t last.

But the thing about being trans was that there was no other side. There was greener grass, no happy ending, and no fucking pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It was just Ryuji and his fucked up body and his fucked up head. He couldn’t blame the world for not seeing a version of himself that only existed in fantasies he made up.
What the hell is the point in trying so hard when no one sees you the way you see yourself? That's what Ryuji always thought, anyway. It's easier not to try at all than to have your heartbroken when doing your best. Some people's dreams don't come true anyways.
