“Steve,” Natasha cuts in. His eyes shift to her. “As ridiculous as it looks,” she says, nodding toward the man with his shield, “this isn’t what you think it is. This…” her hand gestures lightly, “…is Captain America.”
Steve blinks, the words refusing to land. His eyes flicker back to Bucky, who’s still staring at him.
“Not our Captain America, obviously,” Tony chimes in, breaking the silence. “And not our—your James, either.” He gives a little spin of his hand. “Multiverse special. He’s from another dimension.”
“Another dimension? The multiverse?”
“Yes,” Tony replies. “Looks like I was right. Again. The multiverse is real, folks.”
Sam drags a hand down his face. “Man, it’s already giving me a headache.”
Steve frowns, confusion pressing down harder with every passing second. One thing, at least, is clear. This isn’t his Bucky.
Or
Steve suddenly finds himself living with two Buckys. One a Captain America from another timeline, the other his own brainwashed ex-assassin. What could possibly go wrong?

“Steve, let go!” Bucky could feel tears sting his eyes. Whether from the harsh air or from the inevitability of the situation, there was no time to consider. Not when he knew Steve would be a stubborn ass, refusing to let go until it killed him.
Bucky grit his teeth, a vague plan forming in his mind. Steve wouldn’t forgive him for this, but he didn’t care. He couldn’t let his best friend fall too.
As he lifted his free hand to prise Steve’s grip from his own fingers, their eyes met and he froze. Steve’s face was heartbreaking but resolute. For a second those beautiful blue eyes shone too-bright, and he looked like he was trying to memorise all the details of Bucky’s face, which was dumb because how many times had he drawn him, how many years had they spent together, how many–
“Forgive me Buck”
And the next moment he knew, Bucky was flying through the air. Except, not down as he’d expected and been preparing himself for. Rather, he was flying up and–
Bucky landed inside the train, inches away from where he had been blown back by the enemy’s gun.
OR: Steve fell from the train. Bucky crashed the Valkyrie. A reverse AU of sorts.
