Summary
Nami Uzumaki and Itachi Uchiha drift into friendship like dusk folding into night — soft and inevitable. Though Itachi cannot name the tugging at his heart when he looks at his dear friend, the Uchiha curse coils within him, whispering truths he doesn't understand yet: Nami is not just his closest friend, but something far more sacred. It seems all of Konoha know of this truth, except him.

Summary

As Sasuke and Naruto's fists collide a bright light engulfed Sasuke and in the next breath he jolted up in a bed very familiar but one he had not seen in quite some time.
Itachi gazes at Sasuke with gentle fondness as his brother opens the door, stares at him, then abruptly slams it shut, the edge catching Itachi squarely on the nose. Before he can even react, the door swings open again, only to snap closed a second later. This time, it stays shut. A beat passes before muffled laughter drifts through the wood, soft at first, then spiraling into something wild and unhinged. Itachi blinks, concern flickering in his dark eyes. Had returning early from his mission really warranted... this? Whatever this was.

Sasuke is eight - Itachi is thirteen. He goes to pick his brother up from the Academy and finds him tussling and shouting at a little boy who hollers back like the concept of volume control applies to everyone else but him. The boy has scars like whiskers on either side of his nose, stretching across cheeks rounded with baby fat.
Itachi looks at the boy and sees the ghost of a woman his mother had treasured, hears an echo of the woman he had looked up to at the age of five. He hurts, the same hurt he's felt for eight years now, and makes a decision.
He picks both boys up and takes them home. This, unbeknownst to him, changes everything.

So naturally, Itachi lied.

Itachi sees the sword coming before his mind can catch up to him and allow his brother to pierce him and so, he catches Sasuke’s wrist and they wrestle for a while in both attempts to get and kill and maybe die too before something terrible happens.
Itachi is the one who is supposed to be stabbed.
They both freeze as the sound of metal piercing flesh echos around them.The hilt of the knife is in both of their hands and one of them is stabbed.
*in which in the middle of the final battle, something else happens.
