Summary
After everything, they have their cottage and their life together in it. They even signed the contract. together. So, everything should be alright, shouldn't it? Aziraphale thought it was. Not perfect, but...but good. Then Crowley brings home a Christmas tree that he insists is only a fir. In fact, something about Crowley's behaviour on the whole thing sets something off in Aziraphale and opens something he would have denied was there.
How can he cope with it? He can hardly tell Crowley, but he can try and make up for what he has failed to consider.

Summary
Aziraphale watches the fallen being cast out of heaven and despite the clear message that he's not supposed to feel bad about what's happening, he does. The experience teaches him to distrust his instincts and feelings, awakening the belief in him that there's something fundamentally and dangerously wrong with him. The pleasure he experiences through being embodied and interacting with the world corroborate his fears. He spends the next 6000 years fighting his "flaws", trying to be what's expected of him, and afraid that at any moment he'll be found out. The only time he feels like he can be himself is when he's around a certain demon, the Great Tempter of the Garden of Eden himself. Unfortunately, that only confirms Aziraphale's suspicions about himself. Only a bad angel would feel more comfortable on Earth with a demon than in heaven surrounded by proper angels. But through the course of those years, and the events of the cannon, Aziraphale finds the courage and understanding to be himself, learning that hiding and pretending are far more damaging in the end than facing the consequences of being himself.

Post-canon. While snuggling on the sofa in the South Downs cottage, Crowley manages to damage one of Aziraphale's more treasured books, which leaves him very upset. punishment and lesson, Crowley is sent to learn to be still for a longer period of time, by being put in a corner until the floor varnish and wall paint has dried around him. He isn't allowed to use miracles.
How will Crowley cope? Will he cheat? How will Aziraphale apologise for his reaction? -

"Aziraphale, please, I’ve loved you for eons,” Crowley reached out and grasped his hand. Instantly, intense fear from Aziraphale’s essence shot through Crowley and he staggered back with a gasp.
Aziraphale was shaking his head roughly, stepping backwards, too. “Stop,” he said faintly, agony in his eyes. “I can’t give you what you want. I can’t do this, Crowley,” he lamented. His face hardened. “I won’t.”

After waiting for 6,000 years, panicked and feeling as if they've run out of time, Crowley confesses his love at the bandstand. Aziraphale rejects him anyway. -

Summary
No one liked the 14th Century because of obvious reasons, and some liked it for the very same obvious reasons. But, Crowley and Aziraphale disliked it because of at least two more reasons. The effects linger, even after a few hours after the Apocalypse that wasn't. OR How the 14th Century sucks and how BH rears his ugly head since time immemorial.

He's broken. Aziraphale knows it, can feel it, and he isn't quite sure what - if anything - he can do about it. All he knows is that it will take nothing short of a miracle to keep Crowley by his side.
