Rey's saving her pennies while splitting her time between serving drinks and working as a maid for Mr. and Mrs. Solo in a small Washington town teetering on the brink of the great depression. A big black dog starts following her on her daily treks between her jobs, and at night a man with a scar across his eye sips whisky and watches her work. Political tensions are brewing, rum is being smuggling across the lake, early winter storms are blowing in, and Rey is about to find out what it feels like to be kissed.

Due to her desire to be accepted into the normal world, Rey proves to be an angry and snide student, where she finds herself on the starting ends of provoked fights and visits to the headmistress's office for more times than she can count. When she meets Benjamin Solo, a fellow student as introverted as she, Rey finds her anger to be tempered and her disposition calmer with his presence. However, just as they have started to find happiness and contentment in each other's company, terrifying and dangerous things start happening within the institution and both Rey and Benjamin find themselves needing to protect each other with their gifted abilities in order to survive the dark forces which surround them.

Trying to contain the urge to weep in despair, she broke into a run. All she had wanted was to know why her parents had left, she never thought she might actually die for that knowledge.
A menacing growl broke behind her and Rey glanced back at the monstrous, black wolf that was stalking behind her.
She screamed, catching its golden eyes in the darkness for a flash before she pushed herself into a sprint. It didn’t chase her at a greater speed, though she sensed the beast could have easily overtaken her. It was savoring the hunt.
