The tales of Abel’s runners have been passed down for generations, long enough to pass from history to legend. And there was no one more legendary than Runner Five, vanquisher of the undead, hero of Abel...
Everyone has heard the epic tales. Everyone knows the adventures. And everyone knows most of them are made up. But myths come from somewhere, right? Legends are rooted in truth. And their story, the true story, has never been told. Not like this.
Don’t be mistaken. This isn’t the story of the hero of Abel. Not quite yet. This is the tale of the woman behind the now-famous designation. This is the tale of how one girl, a girl like any other, came to be Runner Five.
(Or: the Zombies, Run! story that's been brewing in my head for like ten years lol. Starts with Jolly Alpha Five Niner, then follows Five's training through the 5k app.)

Really, it was all Runner Five's fault.
Sure, Sam was the one who organized the decoration runs, and he was the one who sent Jamie out to chop down the tree, and he was the one who arranged for the crane, but what did that have to do with anything? Who cared if he spent hours learning to make bows from scraps? That didn't matter. After all, it had been Five's idea.
Five's brilliantly amazing idea, Five's dangerous laugh, Five's unforgettable smile.
Really, how could he say no to that?Alternate description: Five and Sam plan a massive Christmas party surprise and the rest of the runners get pulled into the shenanigans. Lots of fluff and holiday cheer combined with nice action sequence.

I didn't like how Sam was talking to Janine during the s1 mission "Eavesdropping." A couple of missions later he seems awkwardly anxious to correct himself when he says something he's not sure is sexist.
Thought that was interesting - here's what happened in between.

Sam makes sure the private broadcast of Five’s headset is on before he begins speaking into his headset’s microphone, his tone initially having a slight optimism, though it eventually fades, becoming dejected. “Runner Five, Runner Five come in, Runner Five… Can you hear me? … Runner Five… Come in, Runner Five, if you’re out there… Runner Five, calling Runner Five, come in, Runner…”
Five jogs through the night, trying to avoid the crunch of leaves or the squish of mud under their feet. They had long since stopped trying to communicate to Sam through their broken mic that they hadn’t gone gray, that they were okay.

Aka, Sam and Runner Five's perspectives on S1M7's "A Voice in the Dark", featuring a Concerned Doc, a tired Janine, and the other residents of Abel Township.This story has a lot of dialogue that belong to Six to Start. It follows the mission transcript pretty closely for the majority of the fic, though there are some tweaked elements for my own story purposes.

Subtle step after step he climbed a tower so slowly, he wasn’t even aware he was climbing. Not until, after climbing felt as natural as breathing, Sam finally looked down at the gaping abyss beneath him, the roaring space, the emptiness, and realised that damn, yeah this is an issue.
