Alex met Henry for the first time on a clear night at Lake LBJ, starlight reflecting off the dark water. In the months following, he tried to convince himself the boy called Henry was his teenage brain’s wild concoction, clearly some combination of too much sun and sugar. But he could still hear the rounded vowels and gentle intonation of Henry’s accent in his memory, he could picture the exact curvature of his smile—there was no way Alex could’ve made someone like that up.
