“Kaede,” Kiibo whispers. Her eyes screw shut and her head dips. Kiibo moves fast to keep any of her hair from touching the water. “You aren’t there. We left the game years ago.”
Kaede rasps, “I know.” She leans heavily into Kiibo’s hand when his palm skims her forehead, so he leaves it there, thumbing the moist, tender skin under her eyes. Kaede’s shivering, a heavy crease between her brows as she fights to keep a hold on her surroundings. “I just—god, Kiibo, I wasn’t even expecting it.”
It’s Kiibo’s turn to echo, “I know,” because there isn’t really anything else he can say. He does know. And he knows how endlessly frustrating it is, to be so vulnerable. To be susceptible to getting triggered at the drop of a hat, at the change of a station, at the opening notes of a song. Kaede is so strong. She has pushed through so much, choosing to survive and keep moving and keep loving day after day after day after day, and even still—
Even still, even now, things like this are enough to shake her.
