To him, she was nothing more than a wrongly misplaced sour note on his music sheet, an unwanted distraction in the melody of his life.
As she watched her favorite rom-com, something unsettling crept into her mind. She saw herself—not as Lucy Van Pelt, but as Jaine, the lovestruck lead, fawning over stupid Shane and his stupid guitar.
Is that how she looked? Is that how people saw her?
Were they too afraid to say it out loud, or did they enjoy watching her chase after something she was never meant to have?

10 years have passed since Schroeder last saw the girl who always loitered around his piano. His memories of her fade as he busies himself by honing his skills on the piano. He’s 18 now and in his senior year of highschool. With a scholarship to Juilliard under his belt, his childhood dream of becoming a professional pianist is finally in reach.
Senior year should be smooth sailing from now on, Schroeder thought.
That is, until the van Pelts move back into town.

Having had enough, Schroeder set down his beer bottle to look at her fully. “Just because we don’t have the same interests and goals doesn’t mean I’m boring.”
Lucy conceded, softening. “Yeah, I know. And I love you for being the sarcastic weirdo Beethoven freak you are. But I also want to see you get out there and experience this city. Like, did you know that there’s a jazz bar in Midtown that’s also a library! There’s a flower shop in Soho that turns into a fortune teller’s booth by night! There’s a record shop three blocks away that has a sleepy cat that lies in between the Rock and Indie section. There’s a whole world out there, Schroeder!”
