Randy waited until early evening to open the old flip phone again and go back to the contact list. He hovered over Benson’s name for a long moment before finally pressing the button with a shaky thumb to pull up his information and transcribe the number into his new phone. Another hour passed before he sent a message, a simple “hey”. He laid back on the mattress and closed his eyes, keeping the phone pressed between his palm and his sternum. Not a minute later it buzzed and caused Randy’s body to jerk quickly in surprise, and he opened the message. “hey yourself”.

Even at a distance, Randy could see the rag in the man’s back pocket and the cigarette behind his ear, the familiarity of it burning him from the inside out as he picked up his pace. Once he was within a few feet of the man, Randy spoke, his voice hoarse and shaky, just as the stranger parked the cart outside of a door labeled Maintenance. “Benson?”

Randy went still.
It was like a freeze-frame. Like someone had hit pause on his whole body.
Benson didn’t press. Didn’t say what kind of dream. But the blush that instantly spread across Randy's face made it obvious.
“I heard you say my name,” He sipped his coffee, “Didn’t mean to listen. Just, heard it. And you were shaking.”
Randy's face turned redder. He looked down, hands clutching at the fabric of his jeans.
