It’s so stupid. Tsukasa has no other choice, trapped in the locked-up school grounds. And it had to be the last direction he expected this to go in, because it takes a while before he laughs.
“There’s no Kamo River here.”
Rui squeezes his palm. “And we’re not in Kyoto.”
Tsukasa closes his eyes to relish in an acknowledging nod. “Ah, Kyoto,” he says, voice hugging syllables. In these few beats of silence that split his words, Rui has lived entire lifetimes, yet none of them prepare him for what Tsukasa does next.
As Rui enters his third year of high school, he concludes: it’s the worst thing that happened to him (not really). His friends are there to help.

I turn back to the stove to watch the eggs cook. “So, I wanted to ask, is there anyone coming over today to celebrate?”
He laughs. Laughs. Like the very idea is ludicrous.
“Don’t be silly Mom,” he says. “No one wants to come to my party, and even if they did, they'd be the laughing stock of the school. I understand perfectly! I would never do that to anyone. I'll just decorate my own small cake and eat it by myself.”
Oh.
And here I thought “it breaks my heart” was poetic license. My chest hurts so badly I can hardly breathe.
“Rui…” my husband says.
“Don’t worry, Dad, really!” Rui’s voice is so insistent I almost fall for it. Our son is a talented little actor in his own right. Rui scratches the back of his neck. “Actually, truly, please don’t worry. It hurts more when you pity me.”

Fourteen-years-old Tsukasa Tenma never liked his birthdays. Although, maybe "never liked" was a wrong choice of words. It's not like he disliked them; they were just ordinary days spent in his dull home, with no one to talk to. So why would he be a fan of them? There was absolutely no reason for him to care about his so-called "special day".
Seventeen-years-old Tsukasa Tenma was proven wrong, once again.

But, well, he knows he’s a weak man when it comes to certain people even if he’d rather eat his own shoe than ever admit it, so here he is anyway, walking up to the doorstep of Rui’s house with a bag full of things he’d picked up from the convenience store on the way and raising a fist to knock on the door.

He stares at her, studies the way her features are ever so slightly different from the Miku he knows. Her eyes are a different shape--they remind him of his own. Her mouth curls upwards differently. Her hair flows differently, it's messier, less well-kept. The way she holds herself is nothing like the Miku he talks to often, and her eyes swirl with so many colors and emotions.
"What...is this place?" (A redundant question, he knows, but it feels like he has to ask.)
“You should know better than anyone, Rui,” Miku giggles, a catlike smile crossing her face that he knows she stole from him. “This place is made from your true feelings, after all!”
