Summary
There's a gaping chasm splitting the town in half, swallowing it from the inside out. There are wights guarding the armory. And there's a girl who should be standing next to him lying, cursed and comatose, on the back table in the cellar of what used to be a tavern, before Henry the Usurper came to Hawkins. But somewhere far away—over the walls, through the dark and treacherous Shadowlands—stands the fabled House of Healing, and Steve's going to get Max there and bring her back home if it's the last thing he does.
He didn't count on meeting a stranger in the woods. Maybe that was his first mistake.

“Legolas’s hair is never described properly in the books,” Steve thinks aloud after putting the seven down after moving a three to an open spot he hadn’t seen. “He’s mostly described as being dressed in green and brown, and yeah, Lucas is right, his head was described as dark, like, once but it was night so most of their heads would be dark. Not to mention,” he continues, blissfully unaware of the silence that’s fallen since he started talking, “there’s the whole continuity thing about the different types of elves and their hair color. Like, Galadriel’s type of elves were meant to be blonde but Elrond’s were meant to be dark hair? Plus there’s the fact that Arwen’s hair is black –”
Steve suddenly realizes that the sound of teenagers arguing is gone. He looks up from his game to find the entire room staring at him, ranging from awe (Dustin) to disbelief (Mike) to something that makes Steve think of girls in high school adjusting their shirts so that he could see them almost flashing him (Eddie.) “Oh,” Steve says.

“There was a fire. At the mall. I worked there? At Scoops Ahoy.”
The way he says the last part sounds strange, like it’s really important somehow that Eddie believes him.
“Okay,” he says, then adds, “Is that why you look like that?”
Eddie’s never met a fire with fists, but he wants Steve to tell him what happened—not just assume.
There’s a beat of silence, like Steve’s weighing his options, and Eddie knows a lie’s coming before Steve even opens his mouth.
“Yeah. Building caved in. We made it out—Robin and I. Paramedics checked me over and said I couldn’t drive, so I decided to walk.”
Almost ten miles, Eddie estimates. Sure. Totally normal thing to do in the middle of the night, battered and bruised, after escaping a fire.
But he’s pretty sure that’s all he’s going to get, so he settles on, “Good thing I came along, then.”
“Yeah.”

Eddie doesn’t expect to find Steve Harrington half-dead on a dark road in the middle of the night — or to be the one he clings to after.
