Hanelai swallowed the burning in her throat, threatening to spill out as another choked sob. Daji was right. She would not, could not, run. Her lips quivered as she pressed them against her daughter’s forehead. She could only hope that her goodbye, a prayer of vindication to their god, would be enough.
“Her name is Mai’rinnen,” she whispered as she placed the wailing infant into Daji’s grasp. As if it would matter.

“I’ve been wanting to kiss you for a long time,” he admitted, just loud enough that it still sounded like a secret. “Rin you—“ he paused, drawing in a deep breath that wracked his entire body as if it pained him.
“What?” she pressed, impatience seeping into her voice like that strange warmth that even the damp cold of the river couldn’t snuff out. “What is it?”
Nezha looked so frustratingly beautiful then, with his unreadable gaze reflecting the surrounding luminescence. She thought she long ago ceased to be mesmerized by him, but it was as surprisingly easy to yearn as to resent.
“You’re divine.”
