    Summary

From the Scots word for ‘seal’, a selkie was a seal who could take on human form. A common element in all the selkie-folk tales, and perhaps the most important, is that in order to shapeshift, they had to cast off their sealskins. Within these magical skins lay the power to return to seal form, and therefore the sea. If this sealskin was lost, or stolen, the creature was doomed to remain in human form until it could be recovered. The most common theme in selkie folklore is one in which a cunning young man acquires, either by trickery or theft, a selkie’s sealskin. This prevents her from returning to the sea, leaving the selkie with no choice but to marry her captor.

"I like to… how can I put this… I’m something of a glutton for the build up to things.”

Nick can only nod. His feet are cemented in place with his back supported by the wood of the office door. Charlie has made his way over to his desk to shrug off his tote bag before turning back to Nick.

“But you…” Charlie shakes his head. “You’re something of a trial for my historically unblemished patience, Nick.”

Or, the one where Charlie is a sex therapist and his game gets Nick giggling in his lap on the first date.

    Summary

“Thinking back now, Charlie didn't want to make assumptions, but he hoped he was part of the reason Nick switched courses. If not for him (which seemed unlikely since they'd just met), but because this course was more interesting than what he was previously taking, an overall favour that saved Nick from a boring start to his week and awarded Charlie a friendship.

A very important one, at that.

Now, with an entire term, several failed study sessions traded for video games, walks at the park between their flats, tipsy talks in Charlie's bedroom after nights out, an endless thread of texts between them, and a friendship the likes of which he'd never experienced, Charlie couldn't imagine a world where Nick wasn't with him twice a week — typically more, almost daily.”

Or, a multi-chapter, alternating-POV story about Nick and Charlie finding each other at the University of Leeds, forging a friendship, falling in love, and figuring things out along the way. Story loosely inspired by the song Betty by Taylor Swift, with chapters based off lyrics while following a linear plot.
