Summary
“You’ll manage, Bucky,” Gale says before he can think better of it, and when John looks up at him with eyes wet and glistening, he wishes he could take it back. Maybe not just the cold, then.
“I’ll manage?” He sounds level at least, hot drunk but no different to normal. A little edge, a little rasp.
“Without ‘im. I know it’ll be—But you’ll manage.” John’s answering scoff has a meanness in it, and he does look down again, but thankfully he doesn’t stop walking.
“I’ll manage. Yeah, I’ll manage. I’ll manage without him, because I managed before, that right?”
“That’s right.” Gale’s murmuring again, and you don’t grow up in Wyoming without learning how to soothe a horse, and somehow that’s the voice he’s using right now. Tempted, even, to soothe like he would a horse: hand rubbed broad along John’s flank, cupping his neck like he’d cupped Gale in the pub, rubbing solid and firm. Might quiet those jitters, still jittering even though John’s trudging along with his sight on the ground, trying to sniff away his wet eyes.

Summary
It had been four years since Gale Cleven had found one “Bucky” Egan almost bleeding to death in his stables, and life had been far better for it.
The town of Lemmon welcomed their new Deputy sincerely, a pleasant change to the lawman who had come before him, and Bucky had responded to their acceptance with pleasing smiles and endearing quips. Even brothers, Crosby and Bubbles, had started to fear him less, and like him more. John had slipped into Gale’s world and knocked it out of orbit, into a kinder, softer galaxy.
-
Rosie’s holding a letter in his hand.
“Bucky home yet?” He asks carefully. “I ain’t seen him.”
All Gale can do is shake his head, dread building in his lungs. In his peripheral, Curt stands up.
“He okay?” Curt asks.
“Course he is,” Gale snaps, and then regrets it. He says, softer, “when you known him not to be okay?”
-
The one where Deputy John Egan doesn’t come home for a few days, and Gale sets out to find him.

Summary
"He’s gone,” Gale placed a hand over Bucky’s, his other hand moving to grip the back of his neck and squeezing. “He’s gone, John.”
The hand underneath Buck’s spasmed, closing on air as Buck managed to prise it away from the dead boy’s throat, keeping it captured in his fingers so that he could feel the thrum of Bucky’s pulse in his wrist and know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he was alive."
