Viktor stops in his tracks. If he closes his eyes, he can imagine Jayce saying that to him. Between the creak of furniture, whisper of fabric, and soft but hurried breathing; he can imagine it’s them. Which is pretty pathetic if Viktor is being honest with himself.
But as he stares blankly into the dark abyss of the stacks—as if staring down the black barrel of a gun—pathetic doesn’t sound so bad. Pathetic is better than paralysis. It’s better than regret.
And what are scientists if not curious?
Late one night, Viktor witnesses something he shouldn't and changes the trajectory of his relationship with Jayce forever.

“Yeah, of course.” Jayce’s voice trembles and he tries his best to swallow the giant lump in his throat. “Go for it.”
“At the competition, when you pulled me aside and said all those sweet things to me… I don’t know what came over me, but I really wanted to kiss you.”
Jayce’s heart stops. It lurches to a halt just as the air is taken right out of his lungs. There’s no way he just said that, right? He must have misheard. Without moving a muscle, he whispers, “You—what?”
Viktor lifts his head to look at his face. The tone of his voice is soft and gentle when he speaks again, as if he’s afraid that his words will scare Jayce off. “I said… I really wanted to kiss you.”

He winced internally when Viktor went sheepish again.
“The redness is… temporary,” Viktor said. “It is the muscle and bone beneath that truly bothers me.”
He stretched his back, ribs fanning out under the mottled skin as he arched beautifully at the spine. Jayce watched with what he hoped was a neutral expression despite the fact that he’d spent so much time imagining that skin rippling under his fingertips, he could almost feel it.

It was mechanical, the way that armor came off and was stacked and placed aside. Ashton’s vest was discarded in a heap on the floor to the side. Orym’s shirt and pants were neatly folded over and laid on top of the chest in the room over three sprigs of mint he’d grown the day before. Ashton’s boots were left in front of the chair he sat in to take them off. Orym’s sandals were neatly lined up under the foot of the bed.
Soon they were in just under things, looking across the space at each other.
Ashton tilted his head toward his bed and asked, “Want to fuck around before bed?”
In with Friends with Benefits works fine, until they realize, after some sex that's... different, that they might want a little more.
