Spock doesn’t notice, or he simply does not comment. The shallowness of the meld keeps his heart and ceaseless monologue beneath its casing, untouched, the space respected by the shields he can feel serenely guarded against Spock’s mind. This thing between them: forever implied, never named.

He feels something dislodge, and the force of his coughing pushes it upwards. It settles on his tongue, delicate and light, and McCoy knows what it is even before he catches his breath enough to reach into his mouth and pull it out.
