Lucy knows she's not winning, knows it in her bones the way the gunshot rattled through them as it tore through Jesse James. She knows it like she knows her sister won't exist when she's back, she's sick of knowing that they've always been steps behind. She drains her drink, wants to surprise him, revels in the burn as the cheap vodka hits her throat and his quiet as he waits for her to respond, and walks away.

Napoleon knows he's best at this, playing people till they're his, and no amount of disdain or pity or whatever other horrifyingly misplaced emotion is going to make him embarrassed by it, make him think any less of his finest skill. It's what makes him such an asset, after all, and they can't deny it, just like he can't deny that he loves this part of the job, regardless of the blackmail. This is the bit he soars through, the part he'll find joy in right up to the end and it doesn't matter that Illya isn't a mark because right now Napoleon needs with all the voracity of the starved when confronted with a full meal.

A set of stairs, five minutes and one picked lock later has him in the room, facing the safe. Napoleon has dealt with safes like this one before, and his methods are not exactly what the agency teaches -- nor, indeed those taught by the KGB, Illya had told him, scorn for Napoleon's previous vocation clear in his voice, their methods usually involve drilling -- but Napoleon can crack into a safe in half the time they can, the only issue is the delicacy required. He's good at delicacy, when the situation calls. He's good at most things -- Illya had scoffed, said "I'm better", walked away.
