Amane couldn't help but think it was... beautiful. Not in the strident sense of the word, but in something much more delicate and strange. A beauty that clashed with the gloomy landscape and at the same time fitted in with a disturbing naturalness.
He took a step, the gravel crunched under his shoes, and the girl turned her face slightly. His eyes, large, deep, of an impossible burgundy, like two bright rubies, crossed with his.
In that instant, Amane felt the air thicken, the murmur of the sea slowing down, as if time itself had held its breath.
He didn't know if she smiled, or if it was just a reflection of the haze.
But he knew, with a certainty that shook him, that this encounter was not an accident.

Summary
A canon-divergence AU beginning at the point where Misa is taken into custody as the second Kira and forfeits her Death Note. Light wants to turn himself in, but Rem has decided that Light, and the Death Note, are too dangerous for Misa. Rem forces Light to cut ties with her, hoping she can have a normal life again.
Light breaks up with Misa and continues operating as Kira, leaving Misa alone in L's custody. L, suspecting that Misa might be more powerful than she appears, decides to try to take advantage of Light’s abandonment and befriend Misa, hoping that if he earns her trust, she might turn on Light and help L bring Kira down.
